BTwo weeks ago, I had an amazing trip to my friend’s house in Serawai. Serawai is the name of a sub-district in Sintang Regency, Indonesia. At that time, I was warmly welcomed by peaceful green yard. My trip was full of unforgettable moments: great people, delicious food, and new cultures. However, what left a remarkable impression on me was meeting up with my friend’s dad, Fx. Ngawan. He is now working as an education supervisor in Sintang Regency. At our first encounter, he looked like a typical Dayaknese man with dark skin. As he mentioned that he used to be an English teacher, we discovered we were a match! I am an English teacher myself. More importantly, he is a language enthusiast and a hyperpolyglot(超级多语者). During the talk, we often switched from one language to the other such as Indonesian, English, Javanese to Ahe. He is now fluent in at least 15 languages and most of them are local languages. When he was assigned to be a teacher and education supervisor, he had to go all the way from Serawai sub-district to Sintang Regency by motorcycle, riding about 170km by motorcycle. The trip could take six hours if the day was bright and sunny. However, it was not uncommon for him to spend three to seven days for the journey if the raining season came. Therefore, he had to stop at some villages if he couldn’t continue the trip and meet up with people with so many different languages along the way. So, whenever he stopped in a particular village, he learned a different language. For him, learning languages helped him to connect with people. In our last talk, he highlighted the importance of learning languages. He hopes that the younger generation in Indonesiastart realizing that language is the gate to open up so many opportunities. Local languages are on the brink of disappearance because more people are leaving it behind. When people stop speaking the languages, the knowledge and culture from that language will also disappear.4. Which of the following impressed the author most?A. Peaceful green yard. B. Delicious food.C. Great people. D. Fx. Ngawan.5. How was Ngawan’s motorcycle trip?A. Difficult. B. Instructive. C. Exciting. D. Interesting.6. What benefit did Ngawan get in his long trip?A. He got enough rest. B. He learned some languages.C. He did much exercise. D. He made many friends.7. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. Learning languages isn’t an easy job.B. Young people don’t grasp opportunities.C. Local languages are being more important.D. Languages and culture are closely related.CFuturologists are making a lot of predictions about our future life and they are predicting how we will travel, work and live in the next 30 years. By 2048, some futurologists foresee that some “talking” buildings will appear in our life. By the middle of the century, it's believed that buildings will be able to “talk” to people through various sensors when the heating needs to be turned on. As a result, there will be no switches. Instead, a lot of networks will appear, which can be compared to a human nervous system. In the next 30 years, buildings will be made from concrete plastics and shapechanging materials. All of them can heal themselves at that time. As architects (建筑师) are racing to develop the world's tallest buildings, there will be a need for new kinds of elevators, through which vehicles could even travel into the buildings. German engineers have already started working on such technology called Multi. By midcentury, scientists believe that buildings will be miles tall. Some of them may be very large and they can function as small cities. By comparison, at present, the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai, measures 828 metres high. As the future building can rise through the clouds, their windows will be replaced by virtual screens. In this way, people can choose any view as they like. At height extremes, a London Spaceport is also likely to come into being by 2048 as the space industry develops very quickly. There is a huge cost advantage going to space from as high a base as possible, so a spaceport is very likely to be over 10 km and even as much as 30 km, using carbonbased materials.8.How will the heating system be controlled in the future?A.Through the net. B.Through sensors.C.Through switches. D.Through mobiles.9.What might happen to the future buildings in a disaster?A.They can recover by themselves.B.They can seek help automatically.C.They can transport people into space.D.They can protect people against harm.10.What's likely to be the advantage of Multi?A.Seeing the scenes as you please.B.Allowing vehicles to travel into buildings.C.Connecting the earth with the space.D.Making it possible to build high buildings.11.What does the underlined word “they” (Para.3) most probably refer to?A.Scientists. B.German engineers.C.Future buildings. D.Virtual screens.DStudies have shown most people fail to realise how much time they spend on their smartphones each day.Frank and Amelia’s family were put to a test, using a free app called “Moment-screen Time Tracker”.The Vascellaros—Frank,Amelia,14-year-old twins Frankie and Joe,and 17-year-old Sam—all said they did not really know they were spending so much time on their phones each day.“Honestly,I don’t feel like I’m on my phone a lot,” Amelia Vascellaro said.Amelia was on her phone far less often than Frank, according to the app. While Amelia spent about an hour per day on the phone,Frank spent close to four hours on his phone—which came as a shock to him.The children’s times varied but they often spent more than a couple of hours on the phone as well.Minneapolis-based Dr Kirsten Lind Seal sees phone usage come up a lot among families.Lind Seal said many family members’ phone use has become problematic.“If we hear more than once,‘Do you have to be on your phone right now?Can you please put your phone down?Did you hear what I said?’ it may be a sign that it is negatively influencing our family relationships and our daily lives,” she said.Lind Seal said actually paying attention to how much time one spends on the phone is a good first step in deciding when to put it down. She asks parents to encourage more face-to-face communication for teens and young adults as they continue developing their social and emotional skills.“What we find is that we are really losing out on empathy—the ability to understand other people’s feelings and problems—when we spend a lot of time on our smartphones to communicate with other people,” she said.12.How did the families tested by the app feel about the test results?A.Satisfied. B.Doubtful. C.Uninterested. D.Astonished.13.Why did Lind Seal mention the three questions in Para.5?A.To encourage people to live a simple life.B.To explain the signs of problematic phone use.C.To show the importance of close relationships.D.To ask people if they use phones too much.14.What did Lind Seal want to convey in the last paragraph?A.We should make more face-to-face communication.B.We can understand each other better using smartphones.C.Our ability of empathy is strengthened by smartphones.D.Smartphone usage improves the teens’ emotional skills.15.Where is this text most likely from?A.A diary. B.A guidebook. C.A novel. D.A magazine.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Why sensitive kids will make the world a better placeSensitive children are these special, observant people.
