    单元话题语篇练
In America, there's only one way to pronounce 1. the letter Z: zee, of course. However, head to England, Ireland, or any other Englishspeaking country, 2. and you'll find that most natives refer to the same letter as zed.
To understand this difference 3. in pronunciation, you have to look at the origins of the English alphabet. As you can imagine, the British zed is the 4. older (old) of the two pronunciations, and it 5. dates (date) all the way back to the 1400s. The pronunciation comes from Latin and Greek, as both ancient languages are 6. similarly (similar) pronounced as zeta.
While zed has an origin that makes logical sense, the reason why Z is pronounced as zee in the US is a bit more practical. This pronunciation 7. that/which first appeared in Thomas Lye's New Spellingbook in 1677 has been changed in order to reflect the bee, cee, dee, ee, gee pattern that the rest of the alphabet follows. In the 8. nineteenth (nineteen) century, the pronunciation really took off when Charles Bradlee wrote the famous alphabet song and included zee instead of zed 9. to rhyme (rhyme) with me.
So there you have it: When it comes down to it, the reason why Z is pronounced as zee in America is nothing more than 10. convenience (convenient).
