Two years ago, my friend Terry and I were living in our dormitory at our university. With his birthday approaching, he came to me with an unusual request. Instead of receiving presents and getting drunk (like most every other 21­year­old would), he wanted to do some acts of kindness. I was struck with such an idea.He told me about a TED talk he had watched online, which had inspired him.

Our university is not located in the safest area in Los Angeles. In fact, its location is so unsafe that the school employs the second largest private legal militia (民兵队伍) in the United States to protect its students. They have to work around the clock, standing on street corners throughout the university keeping watch. It's a thankless job as most students grow used to seeing officers all around and finally hardly even notice their presence.

How could we show them our appreciation? We rented a truck and asked its driver to drive us around the place where we knew the officers would be and we poured them each a cup of hot chocolate.The truck driver was a bit hesitant (犹豫的) about our plan at first but after a while he was helping us spot officers and our lively spirits had spread to him as well. Smiles and appreciative words from the officers impressed us a lot. Soon they were talking about us over their radio and we were the ones being spotted and called over. Finally, the hot chocolate seemed secondary (次要的) to their interest in meeting us, the two boys that went around with hot chocolate expecting to share some late­night laughter. It was amazing to see how a small simple act can lift everyone's spirits.

Radha is a little sweet girl, who is 7 years old.Radha is a bit curious about everyone and everything she sees or hears.

One morning, she told her mother that she wanted a new friend for herself.On hearing that, her mother said, “Dear, you already have so many friends.” But Radha exclaimed, “Oh, Mum, these friends you are talking about go to their house as the sun sets. I want a friend who stays with me.”

Radha understood what her mother's point was, but she didn't understand the role of the mango plant. She questioned, “Mum, I understand but then again why do you have a mango plant？”

Her mother replied, “Dear, this plant will be always with you as your friend.He will grow up beside you. Share your thoughts and secrets with him. Water him. This friend will not only provide you with shade but will give you fruits.”

Radha happily watered the mango plant and promised to cherish (爱护) it. This was Radha's new friend...

The knock at the front door announced that there was a visitor. Mr. Radcliffe and his wife Molly had lived in this community for almost three decades and the families all knew one another so that the youngsters often bounced from home to home looking for friends and entertainment.

Even Radcliffe and Molly were regularly visited and, since all the parents knew and trusted each other, sometimes the youngsters would come in for a time.In the school holidays, Molly and Phil had even been known to take a couple of the children at a time to the local cinema to give their neighbors a break.

The knocking was repeated.It was probably one of the kids. Mr. Radcliffe opened the door, looked down, and found a small boy of about 10, head down and face hidden, nose sniffling, obviously in trouble.

“Come in，” he gestured.“Take a seat in the living room. I'll be with you in a minute.I just need to get my glasses.” He sped up the stairs, ran into the bedroom, and picked up his glasses from the bedside cabinet.

“Now then，” Mr. Radcliffe asked as he walked into the living room.  “Philip, what's all this about? Are you alright？”
