    When yu feel like everyne arund yu is having mre fun and spending mre time with friends, it can make yu feel bad abut yurself — even if it's nt true.A study published by Whillans and her clleagues n Thursday fund that 48 percent f cllege freshmen in their secnd semester at the University f British Clumbia in Vancuver believed that their friends had made mre friends than they had since schl began.31 percent felt the ppsite.
    “Since scial activities, like eating r studying with thers, tend t happen in cafes and libraries where they are easily seen, students might verestimate (过高估计) hw much their friends are scializing because they dn't see them eating and studying alne,”says Frances Chen, the study's senir authr and an assistant prfessr in the UBC psychlgy department.
    A secnd, smaller study they published at the same time indicates that feeling left ut made the students pretty unhappy.This was surprising, Whillans says, because many high­achieving peple — i.e.the nes mst likely ging t cllege — believe they're better equipped than their peers t handle challenges.But when peers appear t be ding better scially, that can cntribute t feelings that there's smething wrng with us.
