    The Qingda Saline­Alkali Tlerant Rice Research and Develpment Center, led by renwned Chinese agricultural scientist Yuan Lngping, was established several years ag.It set itself a three­year target f develping a kind f salt­resistant rice capable f prducing 4.5 tns a hectare, which wuld guarantee grwers the minimum acceptable level f prfit.The average rice utput in China is 6.75 tns a hectare.
    Planting in the experimental field in Chengyang district and five ther plts f saline­alkali land started at the end f May.The five ther plts were in Dngying, Shandng Prvince;Wenzhu, Zhejiang Prvince;Yan'an, Shaanxi Prvince;Kashgar, the Xinjiang Uygur Autnmus Regin;and Daqing, Heilngjiang Prvince.The sites represent actually every type f saline­alkali land in China and researchers aim t grw different kinds f rice able t cpe with different climate, salinity and sil structure cnditins.
    The test crps in Kashgar and Daqing were als harvested n Wednesday.In Kashgar, the utput reached mre than 7.5 tns per hectare, accrding t experts' tests, much higher than expected.The harvest in Kashgar was satisfactry.The result means it is pssible t plant such salt­resistant rice in suthern Xinjiang in the future.Xinjiang has abut 2 millin hectares f saline­alkali land that have the ptential t be planted with salt­resistant rice, and if it is widely planted it will generally imprve rice prductin in the regin.
    The seawater rice grwn in Daqing nly prduced 3.1 tns per hectare.A live vide n Shandng TV shwed grwers appearing a little disappinted by the result, as they hped the experts' effrts wuld increase prductin greatly.The water and sil cnditins f the site were nt ideal, and the PH level was extremely high.
