Picture a young Chinese woman in a field, dressed in traditional hemp (麻布) clothing, as she picks flowers to create makeup for her cheeks. Imagine the same person making a bamboo sofa, making soy sauce and cooking all sorts of delicious dishes.
It may sound hard to believe, but such a person exists in modern China, and her name is Li Ziqi. On Dec. 14, 2019 she won the Person of the Year in the category of cultural influence awarded by China Newsweek.
With a fan base of more than 27 million people on Sina Weibo and over 10 million followers on the video-sharing site YouTube, Li has made a name for herself in a series of videos that show off a pre-industrial Chinese way of life in rural Sichuan province. “I want to do my part to let more people know about Chinese culture,” the blogger told the reporter. “Much of the popularity of my videos owes to the attraction of Chinese culture.”
Li seems to be a master of all kinds of skills—cooking, painting, design and farming. She raises silkworms to sew a quilt for her grandmother and grows plants. Many videos show her picking seasonal ingredients from her own garden and cooking them up with her wood-fired wok. A warm bowl of soup for the winter, a lighter plate of noodles for the summer, Li follows the seasons in her cooking, as China's traditional 24 solar terms also do, and makes food suitable for the particular climate.
“She told the stories of Chinese culture and those of China,” the official Sina Weibo account of China Central Television noted. The success of Li Ziqi also comes from her “passion for life, for her home and for her culture”. Indeed, Li's simple pleasures amaze people living in the hustle and bustle of big cities. “She leads a life that many dream of, but don't dare to give up their current life in exchange for,” iFeng.com wrote. Her handmade lifestyle is a fantasy for many. “In today's society, many feel stressed,” she told the South China Morning Post. “When they watch my videos at the end of a busy day, I want them to relax and experience something nice, to take away some of their anxiety and stress.”

Walmart will soon use 360 robot cleaners across a few hundred of its stores. Using maps input by human employees, the AI-powered cleaners will travel in the store with no difficulty, sweeping the floor—just as human employees used to do.
Perhaps the most striking thing about these robot workers is how not-striking they are. Sci-fi movies suggest a future full of human-like robots who appear with their horrible qualities. Now the future is coming into view, and it looks like a giant lie. It's easy to imagine walking past an Auto-C on a shopping trip without even noticing its presence.
AI has already started to become a part of our everyday life. In New Jersey this week, dozens of workers were hospitalized after a robot at an Amazon fulfillment centre accidentally broke a can and enveloped workers in eye-and-lung-damaging gas. Days earlier in California, an auto-piloted Tesla drove a drunk, sleeping driver down a highway, which no doubt did some potential risks to the other drivers on the road. Highway patrol officers figured out on the spot how to stop the AI car.
Of course, industrial accidents and drunk drivers existed well before AI. Tools with the power to release the burden of physical labor—horses, steam machines, self-driving cars—also come with the power to injure. And the presence of AI-powered machines just steps away from us is, for now, still a rare thing for most people.
But the nature of robots' coming into our daily life will make it harder to recognize—or object to—the bigger changes they bring later. Walmart insists that the robot cleaners give employees more time for customer service and other tasks. Critics point out that they could just as easily become an excuse to reduce staff and wages.
8.What is the difference between sci-fi movies and the reality?
A.Now the human-like robot is not hard to recognize.
B.Now people don't go to see the sci-fi movies.
C.Now the human-like robots can tell lies.
D.Now it is easy to ignore the robots.
9.Why were some workers in hospital in New Jersey?
A.They damaged the robot first.
B.The robot caused an accident on purpose.
C.The robot made a mistake by chance.
D.The robot driving them on the highway had an accident.
10.What is the attitude of the author to AI?
A.Supportive. B.Objective.
C.Doubtful. D.Indifferent.
11.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Artificial intelligence is bringing great effect to our daily life.
B.Walmart will soon use 360 robot cleaners across all its stores.
C.We should say no to artificial intelligence.
D.Artificial intelligence is dangerous to our life.
D
Thanks to the progress of artificial intelligence(AI), robots have won against human players in a number of games, such as chess, Go and even mahjong. And now, AI-powered robots are showing their talent in professional curling(冰壶).
Recently, a robot team named Curly has drawn much attention as it successfully beat two South Korean national curling teams. Researchers from Korea University in South Korea, and Technical University of Berlin in Germany developed the robot.
Curling is a challenging sport that requires a mix of precision(精确度) and strategy. In the game, a player called the “thrower” gently slides the stone and releases it before a boundary(界线) called the “hog line”. The stone slides down to the target, known as the “house”. An opposing team does the same, so both teams accumulate stones in the same house. At the end of the round, the team with a stone closest to the center of the target gets a point.
This requires the players to figure out the force and angle needed to slide a heavy stone in order to land it in the house or make it into another position. Players also have to form a strategy to prevent the opponent from getting their stones closest to the center of the house. And apparently, Curly has made progress in mastering these skills.
Curly is a team of two robots: One is responsible for observing the position of the stones at the scoring end, while the other does the throwing. But how was this robot programmed to achieve this?
Researchers built a simulation(模拟) of a curling game for the robots to play around. In the simulation, the researchers approximated the physics of the real world as best as they could, considering various conditions, such as the ice surface and the positions of stones. Then, there is curling strategy. The robots were trained in different situations to deal with various throws. The researchers found that Curly adapted to many variables(变量) of the game the same way a person would.
This shows that a robot can observe the real world and act accordingly in a precise and strategic manner, which is a sign of a promising future for the ever-expanding use of AI.
12.What do we know about the team of robots named Curly?
A.It can play different kinds of sports.
B.It defeated human players in sports games.
C.It is more advanced in sports than other robots.
D.It was developed by researchers from South Korea.
13.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The way to play curling.
B.The use of AI in sports competitions.
C.The ways Curly can be improved.
D.The reasons why Curly was invented.
14.What did researchers find out about Curly when it was being trained?
A.It could consider different conditions.
B.It could develop new game strategies.
C.It could build a simulation of a game.
D.It could copy what human players did.
15.What attitude does the author have toward AI technologies?
A.Worried. B.Unconcerned.
C.Annoyed. D.Hopeful.
Last Sunday I was thinking about the difference between successful people and those who don't achieve anything significant. I made an interesting discovery. This difference may at first look obvious, but the fact is quite the opposite. 16 Everyone has a purpose behind their actions. If they don't, they wouldn't take action.
17 When they take action, at the back of their minds they think about success that this action is going to bring them.
18 What's the purpose behind your actions? Do you work to thrive (蓬勃发展) or to survive? Do you go to work to feed your family or to create an amazing lifestyle?
Different purposes will result in completely different life experiences. People who work to survive are the ones who fear that some unexpected bills will arrive. They go to bed worrying about money and unimportant things. They hate their employment but don't quit because they doubt their own ability to create something greater. I know this kind of feeling because I was like that once. That's a very uncomfortable state to be in because you are constantly worried about insignificant things. 19 Therefore, you cannot achieve anything great.
Now there are some people who don't accept the “Life is hard” story and they are fueled by an entirely different purpose. They work to thrive. 20 They have a beautiful vision and they take constant action to make that vision a reality.
A.So let me ask you a few questions.
B.This state does not allow you to be creative.
C.It lies in what motivates people to take action.
D.Such an attitude invites great opportunities to you.
E.And they don't think about why something cannot be done.
F.And this makes you take even more or better quality action.
G.But successful people have a completely different purpose behind their actions.

Almost everyone else had their camera on, and I feared that if I kept mine off, I wouldn't be viewed as “present”. The 34 I experience during Zoom meetings compounds other stressors in my life. However, reduced anxiety and a chance to take care of household duties while still contributing to the meeting—are 35 it to me.

There was a rich couple who was throwing a big New Year party at their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was of high cost and at a fixed price. They wanted to maintain their level of standard so they didn't mind paying for it. After purchasing all they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, and looked very unhealthy, and his clothes were torn, and he looked as if he wasn't even able to meet his daily needs.
They asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods to their home. The old porter quoted just $20, well below the market price. Yet, the couple argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $15. The porter was struggling to make even one time's meal so he needed anything he could earn.
The couple was very happy thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter and paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, and two hours passed, but the porter still didn't deliver their stuff.
The wife started to get angry at her husband, “I always tell you not to trust such person, but you never listen to me. I am sure instead of delivering the goods to our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file the complaint against him.”
They both left towards the market. On their way near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their goods in his cart! The angry wife asked him, “Where is that old thief? These are our goods and he was supposed to deliver them. It seems you poor thieves are stealing our goods and going to sell them.”

根据第二段中“Sci-fi movies suggest a future...even noticing its presence.” 根据第二段中的“Now the future is coming into view, and it looks like a giant lie.”

故结合选项可知,A(人工智能正给我们的日常生活带来巨大的影响)切合该话题。故选A。 B(沃尔玛很快将在其所有门店使用360个机器人清洁工)为文章开头引出话题的一个具体事例;C(我们应该对人工智能说不)和D(人工智能对我们的生活是危险的)表述过于绝对和片面。

根据第二段中“Recently, a robot team named Curly has drawn much attention as it successfully beat two South Korean national curling teams.”
根据第三段中的“In the game, a player called...gets a point.” 故选A。B(人工智能在运动比赛中的应用)、C(可以改进Curly的方法)及D(Curly被发明的原因)均不是第三段的主旨。
根据倒数第二段最后一句“The researchers found that Curly adapted to many variables(变量) of the game the same way a person would.”及最后一段“This shows that a robot can observe the real world and act accordingly in a precise and strategic manner, which is a sign of a promising future for the ever-expanding use of AI.” 故选A。
3.target n.
This shows that a robot can observe the real world and act accordingly in a precise and strategic manner, which is a sign of a promising future for the ever-expanding use of AI.
that a robot can observe the real world and act accordingly in a precise and strategic manner为宾语从句,作shows的宾语。which is a sign of a promising future for the ever-expanding use of AI为非限制性定语从句。
16.C 由上一句“This difference may at first look obvious, but the fact is quite the opposite.”和下一句“Everyone has a purpose behind their actions.”
由上段中“Everyone has a purpose behind their actions. If they don't, they wouldn't take action.”和下一句“When they take action, at the back of their minds they think about success that this action is going to bring them.”
故选A项。
19.B 由上一句“That's a very uncomfortable state to be in because you are constantly worried about insignificant things.(那是一种非常不舒服的状态,因为你总是担心一些无关紧要的事情。)”可知,B选项中的This state对应上文中的a very uncomfortable state,B选项“这种状态不允许你有创造性。”切题。故选B项。
20.E 由上面两句“Now there are some people who don't accept the ‘Life is hard’ story and they are fueled by an entirely different purpose. They work to thrive.”和下一句“They have a beautiful vision and they take constant action to make that vision a reality.”

I use a virtual background—a picture of my university office—to hide the fact that I'm in my kitchen, where it's easier to avoid the loud calls for “Mama!” from my 3-year-old daughter and the hunger cries of my infant son.
I use a virtual background.;to hide the fact that I'm in my kitchen为目的状语,that I'm in my kitchen为同位语从句;where 引导非限制性定语从句,修饰先行词kitchen。

It has led to a unique type of Zoom burnout, one I fear is 25 to working mothers.
I've always tried to hide my motherhood 26 from plain view. I don't have photos of my children on display in my university office, 27 some of my male colleagues clearly feel comfortable doing so. I haven't wanted my colleagues to 28 me as less committed to my work because I have children. 29 now, working from home, I feel unable to control whether my children are 30 .
My workdays are 31 with meetings to discuss research projects. When the pandemic started and the meetings 32 to Zoom, I felt an unspoken 33 to turn my camera on.

Paragraph 1:

根据第四段中的“Many videos show her picking...for the particular climate.” A:李子柒在Twitter上有1,000万粉丝;根据第三段中“With a fan base of more than 27 million people on Sina Weibo and over 10 million followers on the video-sharing site YouTube”可知,A项说法不正确。 根据第二段中“On Dec. 14, 2019 she won the Person of the Year in the category of cultural influence awarded by China Newsweek.” 根据最后一段中“Indeed, Li's simple pleasures amaze people living in the hustle and bustle of big cities.”

根据第二段中“Sci-fi movies suggest a future...even noticing its presence.” 根据第二段中的“Now the future is coming into view, and it looks like a giant lie.”
根据第三段中的“In New Jersey this week, dozens of workers were hospitalized after a robot at an Amazon fulfillment centre accidentally broke a can and enveloped workers in eye-and-lung-damaging gas.”
根据倒数第二段中的“Tools with the power to release the burden of physical labor—horses, steam machines, self-driving cars—also come with the power to injure.”
故结合选项可知,A(人工智能正给我们的日常生活带来巨大的影响)切合该话题。故选A。 B(沃尔玛很快将在其所有门店使用360个机器人清洁工)为文章开头引出话题的一个具体事例;C(我们应该对人工智能说不)和D(人工智能对我们的生活是危险的)表述过于绝对和片面。
3.come into view进入视野 4.presence n.
5.hospitalize v.
3.target n.
