    八、阅读理解(共20小题; 每小题2分, 满分40分)
    A
Stephen Hawking, one of the world's most famous scientists, believed that humans will one day have to move into space. “Once we step into space, our future should be safe, ” he said.
Today, many countries are all planning to send astronauts to the Earth's closest neighbor:the Moon. Some of these countries want to create space stations there within the next 10 years. These stations will prepare humans to visit and later live on Mars or other earthlike planets.
__①__ Robert Zubrin, a rocket scientist, thinks humans should colonize(殖民) space. He wants to start with Mars. Why? He thinks sending people to Mars will allow us to learn a lot of things—for example, the ability of humans to live in a very different environment. Besides, any progress we make in the fields of science, technology, medicine. and health will do good to people here on the Earth.
__②__ Elon Musk, the CEO of Space X also believes we should colonize Mars. His longterm goal is to put one million people there if something bad happens to us here on the Earth.
__③__ Many people say it's too expensive. Also, most space trips are not short. A oneway trip to Mars, for example, would take at least six months. People traveling this kind of distance could face many health problems. Besides, these first people would find life especially difficult in space. On the Moon's surface, for example, the Sun's rays are very dangerous. People would have to stay indoors most of the time.
__④__ No matter what different concerns there are, sending people into space seems certain. In the future, we might see cities on the Moon or even new human cultures on other planets. First stop:the Moon.
    56. According to the passage, why are some countries planning to build space stations?
    A. To develop space travel.
    B. To learn more about the Moon's surface.
    C. To prepare humans to live on other planets.
    D. To cut down the number of people living on the Earth.
    57. Which is the best place for the sentence “Not everyone thinks sending humans into space is a smart idea. ”?
    A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
    58. What is the purpose of this passage?
    A. To give reasons for and against colonizing space.
    B. To describe what life would be like on the Moon.
    C. To compare the environments of Mars and the Moon.
    D. To introduce progress in space science and technology.
    B
When it comes to longdistance space travel, the biggest problem is that spaceships can only get as far as the fuel onboard allows. In 1964, a British writer Clarke came up with the idea of “solar sailing” in his science fiction. He wrote of large, mirrorlike sails that collect power from the sun and free spaceships from the limitation of fuel.
This scifi idea was first successfully brought to reality(现实) in 2010 by Japan's IKAROS satellite. Ever since then, the technology has improved mission by mission, with the latest being NASA's Advanced Composite Solar Sail System (ACS3). NASA has recently announced that it's going to team up with Lithuania's satellitebuilding company NanoAvionics to test its new sail in lowEarth orbit.
To many, a solar sail(太阳帆) may look like a giant solar panel(太阳能电池板), but it actually works very differently. While solar panels take in energy from the sun and change it into power, solar sails use photons(光子) given off by the sun to create direct power. Besides, solar panels are big and heavy to carry, while solar sails are just the opposite.
According to Abbott, the CEO of NanoAvionics, the upcoming lowEarth orbit trial with NASA, if successful, will be followed with deepspace missions that involve larger solar sails. These are ideal for lowcost and longdistance space travel because fuel will no longer be a problem.
“It started as a scifi dream, ”Popular Mechanics reporter Jennifer Leman wrote. “Now it could be the future of space flights. ”
    59. What can we say about solar sailing according to the first two paragraphs?
    A. It was widely used in space travel.
    B. It was first tried by IKAROS satellite.
    C. It was from the creative idea by Clarke.
    D. NASA will cooperate with Japan's satellitebuilding company to test its new sail.
    60. Which of the following words best describe solar sails compared with solar panels?
    A. Big and heavy.
    B. Small and light.
    C. Powerful and large.
    D. Small but heavy.
    61. What does the underlined word “These” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
    A. Larger solar sails.
    B. Deepspace missions.
    C. Longdistance space flights.
    D. LowEarth orbit trials.

    62. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Solar Sail: the Latest Technology
    B. Solar Sail: from Dream to Reality
    C. Solar Sail: a New Kind of Spaceship
    D. Solar Sail: a Scifi Dream
    C
The firstever photo of a black hole appeared on April 10, 2019. What can we learn from it?
First of all, black holes are huge stars with gravity(引力)so strong that even light cannot get out of their control.
As its name suggests, a black hole is black, so it'll be impossible to “see” against the black backdrop of space. But nearby objects, around the black hole where light can't get away—could be seen.
So the photo may show a dark point with a ring of bright light around. But that also might be a challenge, as the black hole is covered in a thick cloud of dust(灰尘) and gas.
As you might expect, this won't be the photo of the night sky from your smart phone. Photos will come from the Event Horizon Telescope(视界望远镜), a collection of telescopes around the world specifically(专门地)made to look at black holes.
The photo from the black hole may give us a better understanding of Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity(广义相对论), which he came up with in 1915. The shape of the black hole's event horizon could possibly cast new doubt (产生新的怀疑) upon it.
But even if it casts doubt, the finding would not necessarily mean that his theory is wrong, but we have more physics to understand.
    63. What are black holes according to the passage?
    A. Deep holes. B. Huge stars.
    C. Black clouds. D. Strong lights.
    64. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
    A. It is impossible for us to take a photo of the black hole with our smart phones.
    B. The black hole is covered with a thin cloud of dust and gas.
    C. Many scientists have taken the photos of the black hole so far.
    D. People find it difficult to study the black hole and they will give up.
    65. What is the main idea of the text above?
    A. How to see the black hole.
    B. Try to take a photo of the black hole.
    C. The first coming photo of the black hole.
    D. Something we will learn from the photo of the black hole.
    D
Chinese space lover Wang Yuan has been chosen as one of the volunteers for the Mars500 test project.
He was very happy to be chosen and will accept the challenge. Another five volunteers are all space lovers. They are three Russians, an ItalyColombian and a Frenchman. They will feel what it's like to travel to Mars without leaving the Earth. During the whole process (过程), they are locked up for one and a half years under the condition which is similar to the red planet. So the experiment is called Mars500.
The Mars500 test will be done in a special building in Moscow. Although the volunteers won't leave the building, they will feel as if they are on a real trip to Mars. The most difficult thing is that they will be separated from the people outside. For 18 months, they won't see sunsets or sunrises. That will be hard. When reporters asked what they would miss most during the 500day special life, Charles from France said, “For me, it will be mainly my family, the sun and fresh air. ”
The main task is to study “Man and the Environment”. It will care about the astronauts' physical effects and the experience of staying there. Everyone will stay and work there alone. So they will have to make decisions by themselves and then report to the Earth, and the Earth will tell them whether they do the right thing or not.
Each astronaut is preparing for the great challenge. And people are looking forward to the result of the experiment.
    66. How many volunteers have been chosen for the Mars500 test project?
    A. 3. B. 4. C. 5. D. 6.
    67. The main task of the test is to study ________.
    A. whether there are aliens on Mars
    B. if there is life on Mars
    C. if Mars is suitable for humans to live on
    D. the differences between the Earth and Mars
    68. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
    A. Five space lovers have been chosen as volunteers.
    B. The Mars500 test will take place in Paris.
    C. The Mars500 test is about a real trip to Mars.
    D. The volunteers will face many difficulties.
    E
Many people dream of traveling into outer space. However, spending too much time in space may cause health problems, according to NASA. That's why astronauts shouldn't spend more than six months on the International Space Station(ISS)at a time.
    Muscle(肌肉)and bone loss
In a weightless environment, astronauts don't need to use their muscles to support themselves, so their muscles start shrinking. To keep their muscles strong, astronauts need to exercise about 2 hours each day on the ISS.
    Sleep disorder(混乱)
In space, the sun rises every 90 minutes. It is hard for astronauts to get used to this lightdark cycle when they sleep. Also, they need to sleep in a sleeping bag that is fixed to a wall, and it is uncomfortable.
Astronauts now have individual sleeping pods(分离舱)that help shut out some of the light. Still, studies have found that most astronauts only sleep about six hours each night, even though they should have eight and a half hours.
    Brain changes
Scientists have found that the position of the brain changes during space flights. It can affect how the brain deals with how we see, stay balanced and move around. That's why some astronauts can't control their movement and balance after returning to the Earth. Scientists have also found that astronauts may get used to this change after going on more space flights. But they still need to do more research.
    69. According to the passage, astronauts may have the following health problems EXCEPT ________.
    A. bone loss
    B. brain changes
    C. sleep disorder
    D. headache
    70. Astronauts may have muscle problems after returning to the Earth because______.
    A. they seldom walk while in space
    B. they are too busy to exercise in space
    C. they don't have enough room to exercise in space
    D. they don't need to use their muscles to support themselves in space
    71. Astronauts sleep in individual sleeping pods to ________.
    A. stay warm at night B. shut out light
    C. enjoy a quiet place D. avoid moving around
    72. The best title of this passage is ________.
    A. Sleep Disorder in Space
    B. Brain Changes in Space
    C. Muscle and Bone Loss in Space
    D. Health Problems in Space

We can live on Mars because scientists develop plants that can grow on Mars and can produce food, oxygen and water. The gravity on Mars is only threeeighths of the gravity on the Earth, so we should wear special boots to make ourselves heavier.
On Mars, we will have more space and more free time, so we can live in a home with many bedrooms and have more time for hobbies. Students on Mars can study at home on the interplanetary computer network.
But the food on Mars will not be as tasty as that on the Earth, and the journey to Mars will probably be very uncomfortable.
