Hope for Myopes in China
The Chinese government recently estimated(估计) that more than 450
million people in China were short-sighted. The situation among Chinese schoolchildren
is even more alarming. In 2018, a survey of one million pupils found that among
those between the ages of 12 and 14, 72% had myopia, up from 58% in 2010.
Chinese President Xi Jinping called it "a big problem concerning the future of the country."
The spread of myopia in China is partly related to genes(基因). Myopia is more common among East Asians than among white people. But lifestyle is being shown to play a bigger role. The combination of an exam-crazed culture with the rapid spread of smart phones and computer-gaming technologies explains much of China's problem.
Chinese officials worry about the rising number of myopes. But people's health is not the only concern. Legal Daily recently suggested that China's security could be affected by its shortage of recruits(新兵) with normal eyesight. Last year, China's navy relaxed requirements for new pilots, no longer insisting on 20/20 vision(健康视力).
The government is trying to turn this trend around. In 2018, it promised to ensure that, by the end of 2020, less than 60% of 12-to-14-year-olds would be short-sighted. Students must have at least an hour a day of outdoor activity at school. Video-game makers must release fewer new products and think up ways of limiting the time children spend playing them.
But these moves did not achieve the desired effect. Recent results have shown that the percentage of myopia among students has remained almost the same. It seems that new plans and policies will soon be needed.

Detective Poirot Turns 101
"He was hardly more than five feet, four inches tall, but carried himself with great dignity(自豪). His head was exactly the shape of an egg..."
With this description, Agatha Christie introduced Hercule Poirot in her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles. In the century since, the name Poirot has become familiar around the world. Back then, however, the retired Belgian policeman had just escaped from his war-torn homeland. After settling down in a sleepy English village, he was involved in the murder of a wealthy elderly lady.
Many cases Poirot took on were hard to solve. But as he often said, "The simplest explanation is always the most likely." It just takes the little grey cells, a close eye for detail and a bit of self-confidence. As Poirot found throughout his work, the most ordinary clues could prove to be the most important.
Murder seemed to follow Poirot wherever he went, from rural England to the River Nile. The detective did make mistakes, but he always got his man, woman or both. Poirot could be annoying sometimes — he was too proud of himself and believed he was simply smarter than others. However, he was one of the best-loved characters in fiction. People liked him for his powerful understanding of human nature. The Belgian helped make Christie the world's bestselling novelist.
But after writing 33 novels and 59 short stories starring Poirot, Christie herself became tired of the character. She killed him off in a novel written during WWII but not published until 1975. The New York Times then gave him a front-page obituary(讣告). Today, lots of people around the world still like Poirot. His books are still popular. Many of his stories have been made into films. And Sophie Hannah, a British novelist, has tried to bring Poirot back to life in a series of new stories.
