In the United Kingdm, abut ne in ten peple has sme disability. Disability is nt just smething that happens t ther peple. As we get lder, many f us will becme less mbile, hard f hearing r have failing eyesight. Disablement can take many frms and ccur at any time f life. Sme peple are brn with disabilities. Many thers becme disabled as they get lder. There are many prgressive disabling diseases. The lnger time ges n, the wrse they becme. Sme peple are disabled in accidents. Many thers may have a perid f disability in the frm f a mental illness. All are affected by peple’s attitudes twards them.
Disabled peple face many physical barriers. Next time yu g shpping r t wrk r visit friends, imagine hw yu wuld manage if yu culd nt get up steps, r nt buses and trains. Hw wuld yu cpe if yu culd nt see where yu were ging r culd nt hear the traffic? But there are ther barriers: prejudice can be even harder t break dwn and ignrance inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier f all. It is almst impssible fr the able-bdied t fully appreciate what the severely disabled g thrugh, s it is imprtant t draw attentin t these barriers and shw that it is the individual persn and their ability, nt their disability, that cunt.
