like a spider with fur legs. Until nw, even the mst advanced rbt was almst certain t break dwn when damaged. That’s because its inside cmputer simply desn’t knw hw t perate the machine after its shape has changed. T get arund this prblem, the spidery rbt’s develpers equipped their inventin with eight mtrs and tw sensrs that read hw the machine is tilting. The mtrs and sensrs all prvide electrical signals fr the machine’s sftware.
Using this infrmatin, the system fllws a new prcedure t figure ut the machine’s shape at any given mment. The prgram chses frm amng 100, 000 pssible arrangements f parts. Frm there, the cmputer cnsiders a wide variety f next pssible steps, and it calculates hw best t mve the rbt frward the lngest pssible distance, befre trying t mve again.
“The new strategy is a majr advance in rbtics”, Prfessr Skehan, a scientist in Crnell University says, “and it’s far frm scary. ”The technlgy may smeday help researchers create better artificial arms and legs that give new freedm t peple wh lack them. The new knwledge might als help scientists understand hw peple and animals figure ut their wn sense f place in space.
“Designing rbts that can adapt t changing envirnments and can cmpensate fr damage has been a difficult prblem, ” says neurscientist Olaf Sprns f Indiana University in Blmingtn. “This wrk prvides a new way tward slving this imprtant prblem. ”
