      Cathy's Stry: A Cmmn PrblemCathy knws that she has an essay due n Mnday. Hwever, instead f beginning wrk n it tday, she waits until the last minute, and starts wrk n Sunday night. Of curse, it is impssible t d a gd jb writing an essay in ne night, s she gets a bad grade. She then kicks herself fr nt starting earlier and prmises t d better next time, but she desn’t.
      Why D We Prcrastinate? Des Cathy's stry sund familiar? Like Cathy, many f us prcrastinate—we put ff ding smething imprtant until the last mment. But why d we d this? Sme research shws that we prcrastinate because f negative feelings, such as fear r wrry. We are afraid f ding a pr jb r getting bad grades. We think that we might fail. We put ff ding the wrk in rder t avid having these bad feelings. Sadly, we are mre likely t fail r d prly when we prcrastinate. This creates even mre negative feelings and makes ti mre likely that we will prcrastinate the next time.

      The Lng-term SlutinThe lng-term slutin t this prblem is t deal with ur negative feelings. We need t frgive urselves fr failing. We need t accept that smetimes we will nt meet the mark. We als need t realize that difficult wrk isn't always a bad thing. It is thrugh difficulty that we learn and grw.

      Fur tipsS what can we d? Here are sme tips. First, realize that nce we face ur fears and get started, ur fears ften g away, and we start t enjy the wrk. Secnd, break large prjects int small parts, each with their wn smaller deadline. Take each thing step by step. Third, reward yurself fr getting a step dne. Relax r d smething fun, then get back t wrk. Finally, remve temptatin. This means if yu watch TV t put ff wrk, then wrk at the library. If yu chat with friends t put ff wrk, then wrk alne and turn ff yur phne. Find a place t wrk that des nt have such distractins.
