“I brught all the things that meant a lt t me,” Jennifer Khl, wh was being helped at the sewing table, says, adding that she especially lved the interactin between the tw vlunteers, Christl Mageras and Sarah French. “They were ging back and frth advising each ther, helping each ther,” Khl recalls. Even mre striking t Khl was the teaching nature f these experts.
“Christl said, ‘Cme here, sit next t me, I’ll shw yu this,’ and then she had me stitch (缝) ne f my pillws and cached me thrugh it,” Khl says. “She shwed me her skills.”
Sme repair requests may beg the questin “Why bther?” But the items’ wners have their reasns. The repair wrked — the Nitey Lite shines bright again. Atkinsn culdn’t wait t shw her daughter. “Carlee is very emtinal,” said Atkinsn. “I thught she’ll cry.”
“Repair Cafés are the whle package,” says Suzie Frmer, wh wrks with 70 area Repair Café grups. “The drama f whether an item can be saved, the excitement f a challenging fix and the satisfactin f a gd save, all mixed up with the twin jys f catching up with ld friends while als making new nes. Few realise it, but Britain is a rainfrest natin. Once, a fifth f the cuntry was cvered by temperate rainfrest, frm Crnwall t the Hebrides. Tday less than ne percent f the UK hlds cmplete pieces f this habitat. Centuries f tree cutting, vergrazing (过度放牧) and land clearance have erased mst f it, leaving nly dtted, separated areas. Yet restratin (修复) wrk is nw recvering centuries f lss, led by vlunteers and cnservatin grups frm the Natinal Trust and Wildlife Trusts.
Vlunteers plant species matched t the land. All saplings (树苗) are grwn frm lcal seed stck, t preserve the island’s unique native genetic lines. “We avid imprting utside seed wherever pssible,” Dubbeldam, senir wdland ranger (护林员) with Manx Wildlife Trust, explains. “We’re nt just planting trees — we’re restring what riginally belnged t this land.”
Rewilding is a misleading simplificatin fr this heavy restratin wrk. Simply leaving land untended will nt rebuild rainfrest; cntinuus pressures exist. Uncntrlled sheep and deer grazing stps new saplings surviving, while freign plant species chke native plant life. Mst surviving rainfrest areas are tiny, separated islands which tend t be influenced by drught, disease and temperature changes as glbal warming speeds up. Restratin wrk ften takes place in cld rain, with vlunteers putting in lng, dull days f digging, clearing weeds and carrying saplings. Yet the payff makes every hur wrthwhile.
On the Isle f Man, after a full day’s planting in cld light rain, vlunteers g back t muddy cars, wrn ut, leaving behind hills dtted with tiny saplings that lk unnticeable tday — but will ne day frm a fully functinal rainfrest ecsystem. Acrss windy hills and rain-saked valleys, an ancient wnder is cming back t life.
8.What mainly caused the lss f rainfrest in Britain?
      A.Natural drughts.B.Climate change.
      C.Human activities.D.Vlunteer mismanagement.
9.What is a feature f the restratin wrk?
      A.It fcuses n lcal seeds.B.It relies n freign plants.
C.It leaves land untended.D.It avids all human help.
10.What is the main idea f paragraph 3?
      A.Benefits f rewilding.B.Challenges f restring rainfrest.
      C.Dangers f glbal warming.D.Achievements f past cnservatin.
11.What can we learn regarding the future f the restratin?
A.N mre planting is needed.B.Gvernment will take ver.
C.Vlunteers are lsing interest.D.Rainfrest is expected t recver.
D yu ften feel the eyes f ther peple as yu g abut yur day? Yu trip slightly n the sidewalk, r yu get hme and ntice yur hair was strange — and yu feel rising anxiety as yur mind struggles with what peple must have thught f yu.
The reality is, mst peple (if any at all) didn’t see a thing. They were t busy living their wn lives — and wrrying abut what ther peple were thinking abut them. Enter: The sptlight effect, a psychlgical (心理的) phenmenn where we tend t believe that peple ntice us mre than they actually d.
The sptlight effect is prevalent in many peple’s day-t-day lives, and much f this might feel familiar already. “In nature, the sptlight effect is rted in hw we experience urselves, rather than hw thers actually see us.” Nvena Chanel, an advisr, ntes hw, as human beings, we naturally live within ur wn inner wrlds — ur thughts, emtins, and bdily sensatins — which can make ur wn behaviur feel mre bvius than it is t thers.
But while it’s a perfectly natural and cmmn experience, it can still be a difficult thing t deal with. It can cause scial anxiety and mess up ur thughts.
“S, it is imprtant t understand that this is a very human experience, and ften a sign that yur system is trying t keep yu safe,” Nvena says. “Rather than criticizing (批评) yurself, it can be helpful t apprach it with curisity. Gently nticing and naming the experience, fr example, ‘I’m feeling very aware f myself right nw’; reality-checking yur thughts, asking, ‘What d I think thers are nticing, and what evidence d I have against this?’”
“Over time, as the nervus system begins t experience mre mments f safety in scial situatins, the sptlight effect ften reduces,” Nvena adds. “If the experience greatly impacts daily life, it can be helpful t seek supprt. Cgnitive (认知) and behaviural appraches can help with thught patterns, while relatinal appraches can supprt deeper explratin f hw these experiences have develped.”
12.Hw des the authr present the issue in the first paragraph?
A.By quting an expert.B.By making cmparisn.
      C.By prviding numbers.D.By describing a phenmenn.

      A.Dangerus.B.Strange.C.Widespread.D.Similar.
14.Which f the fllwing indicates sptlight effect?
A.As an utging girl, Lucy enjys being the center in public.
B.After an imperfect perfrmance, I ignred peple’s cmments.
C.Hearing inspiring wrds, Jasn became cnfident n the stage.
D.Walking arund the campus, Tm feels everyne is lking at him.
15.What wuld Nvena Chanel prbably suggest?
      A.Seeking prfessinal help.B.Aviding scial situatins.
      C.Ignring inner experiences.D.Criticizing anxius thughts.
Hw t Make Allwance (零花钱) Teach Mney Smarts
Mst parents agree kids shuld learn abut mney befre they’re let lse n the wrld, but “mney smarts” isn’t exactly a standard bedtime stry. 16 Allwance isn’t just a weekly payut — it’s a mini training grund fr real-life mney management.
      Setting the grund rules
Will yu give cash weekly r mnthly? Shuld allwance be tied t husewrk? 17 Sme say kids shuld earn allwance by ding husewrk. Others believe tying mney t tasks can make children view family cntributins as ptinal. Whatever yu decide, making it clear is yur best friend — when, hw much, what cnditins, and what happens if they “frget” t d their part.
      Hw much is enugh?
18 The right amunt depends n yur family’s budget (预算), yur child’s age, and what yu expect them t cver. A cmmn guideline is £1 per year f age each week. But if yur child is expected t pay fr schl lunches, r birthday gifts, change accrdingly.
      19
Nrmalise mney talk. N need fr a TED Talk — simply ask, “Gt any plans fr yur cash?” Or, “Anything yu’re saving up fr?” Share stries abut yur wn mney mistakes — like the time yu spent yur birthday mney n nvelty scks and immediately regretted it. 20
Teaching kids abut mney is a series f small mments, with enugh mistakes and laughs. Allwance ffers a steady way t practice — thrugh saving, spending, giving, and learning frm everyday chice.
      A.N exact answer here.
      B.Discuss but dn’t lecture.
      C.Shuld kids spend mney freely?

F.What if yu give them t much?
G.Kids appreciate hnesty, and it keeps the cnversatin real.
