The thught f adpting a puppy fr Christmas is extremely appealing: the adrable face with the hliday lights shining in its eyes.

Christmas is all abut lve, which ges beynd thse ideal shts taken in frnt f a perfectly decrated Christmas tree. Great mments never cme easily and a puppy will make yu understand this right away. Frget the mvies where a child’s eyes meet a puppy’s — lve at first sight. Because the true lve cmes later, after lng nights standing utside in the dark and whispering, “Can yu please g already?” and lng days chasing them away frm this and that. Hwever, thse tugh times pale in cmparisn with their cuteness. Yu adpt a puppy nt merely fr its cute lk. Yu want the truble, because the truble is what makes the rest f it s rewarding.
The rule applies t peple t: Lve lies in the deeds we d fr thers. In the last tw years, I have lst my parents. Unexpectedly, what mved me mst was the sadness frm being unable t tend t them any lnger. Taking care f them fr years was truly challenging. Yet my lve deepened, since I culd repay them fr the cuntless sacrifices they made fr me. In this sense, lve becmes fuller and lives n permanently, even when dear nes are n lnger with us.

Last autumn, science fictin writer Chen Qiufan started a special teamwrk with an AI mdel. Chen, wh nce suffered frm creative blck, wrte a sentence and the AI generated the next. But he sn fund himself ding smething unexpected — whenever the AI suggested a directin, he intentinally turned the ther way rund. He turned this “fighting” int a shrt stry, titled The Magic Brush.
While finishing the stry, Chen discvered AI is gd at using a cmbinatin f wrds — every sentence it ffers is the “mst reasnable” chice. Literature, hwever, is brn in precisely the ppsite place: in thse unreasnable mments, in a writer’s shwing true emtins against building fancy wrds.
Chen was ne f the first Chinese writers t experiment with AI-assisted writing, having tried varius tls as early as 2017. When ChatGPT was first released, he, like many, was shcked by its fluency. But the relatinship he eventually built with the technlgy was neither ttal rejectin nr blind dependence. “AI is an extremely pwerful engine f medicrity (平庸),” Chen said in an interview, “but a writer’s jb is t resist medicrity.” That statement may be the key t understanding the relatinship between AI and literature.
Recently anther transfrmatin indicates hw AI can help literature travel further. The technlgy extracts the highlights f a classic and then reshapes them int shrt dramas designed fr the mbile screen. A classic that nce tk days t read can nw reveal its sul within minutes, which is rather ppular these days.
The meaning f bks has never been measured by the vlume (卷) f paper in print. It is measured by the lives behind every single vlume — lives spent watching, feeling, and writing. In an age f AI, we can’t resist AI, but let AI be the ferryman (摆渡人). Let it carry mre readers t the shre f literature, and then let them walk in n their wn.

      A.Turns dwn.B.Thrws away.C.Benefits frm.D.Picks ut.
11.What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
A.AI serves but independent thughts matter.
B.A bk’s value depends n its physical size.
      C.Characters’ experiences decide great literature.
D.AI has becme the main tl fr literary creatin.
Researchers at the University f Missuri are develping a new way t remve micrplastics (微塑料) frm water using specially engineered algae (藻类). Their gal is nt nly t clean waterways but als t recycle the cllected plastic int safer biplastic materials.
“Micrplastics are pllutants fund almst everywhere in the envirnment, such as in rivers, wastewater and the fish that we cnsume,” said Dai, a prfessr in the Cllege f Engineering and principal investigatr at the Bnd Life Sciences Center. “Currently, mst wastewater treatment plants can nly remve large pieces f plastic, but micrplastics are s small that they slip thrugh and end up in drinking water, plluting the envirnment and harming ecsystems.”

The limnene changes the algae’s surface features, making it resist water. Since micrplastics are als water resistant, the micrplastic bits naturally stick t the algae when they meet in water. The prcess frms a thick bilgical layer that sinks t the bttm and can be cllected and remved mre easily. The algae als grw in wastewater, where they help clean the water during the prcess.
“By remving the micrplastics, cleaning the wastewater and eventually using the remved micrplastics t create biplastic prducts fr gd, we can address three issues with ne apprach,” Dai said. “While ur research is still in the early stages, ur eventual gal is t apply this new prcess t existing wastewater treatment plants, s cities can clean their water mre effectively and reduce pllutin at the same time.”
Dai’s lab already grws algae inside large tank bireactrs (生物反应器). One system, a 100-liter bireactr nicknamed “Shrek”, is currently used t prcess industrial waste gas t reduce air pllutin. Lking ahead, Dai hpes t create larger versins f the Shrek system that culd eventually be adapted fr wastewater treatment and the remval f ther pllutants.
12.What prblem d mst wastewater treatment plants have nw?
A.Micrplastics end up in the plants.B.Micrplastics escape during treatment.
C.Large pieces f plastic slip thrugh.D.Large pieces f plastic are unprcessed.
13.What des paragraph 3 mainly talk abut?

C.Why micrplastics stick tgether.D.Hw limnene changes algae’s surface.
