Rbert Hke was brn in Freshwater, n England’s Isle f Wight, n July 18, 1635. He was a sickly child in his early years, but he grew int a quick learner with great curisity. Fr the past cuple f years, cncerns abut cheating at schl have dminated (主导) the cnversatin arund kids and artificial intelligence. But AI is playing a much larger rle in many f their lives. The study defines AI cmpanins as platfrms designed t serve as “digital friends,” like Character AI r Replika. They can be custmized with specific persnalities and can ffer emtinal supprt, cmpaninship and cnversatins. But ppular sites like ChatGPT and Claude, which mainly answer questins, are being used in the same way.
In the same survey, 31% f teens said their cnversatins with AI cmpanins were “as satisfying r mre satisfying” than talking with real friends. Even thugh half f teens said they distrusted AI’s advice, 33% had discussed serius r imprtant issues with AI instead f real peple.
Thse findings are cncerning, says Michael Rbb, the study’s lead authr, and we shuld send a warning t parents, teachers and plicymakers. Adlescence is a critical time fr develping identity, scial skills and independence, Rbb said, and AI cmpanins shuld add t — nt replace — real-wrld interactins. “If teens are develping scial skills n AI platfrms where they are cnstantly being praised, nt being challenged, nt learning t read scial signals r understand smebdy else’s perspective, they are nt ging t be well prepared in the real wrld,” he said.
