Fr years, these stries were just wrds — beautiful, but distant, like a bk I’d read but never lived. Last summer, I barded a plane t Sicily t find the tree and the rts (根) I’d nly knwn in whispers.
My hands shk as I saw the tree in the distance: thick with branches spreading wide like pen arms. I reached ut and tuched it. The bark (树皮) was warm, wrn smth by decades f hands — my great-grandfather’s hands, his father’s, his grandfather’s. In that mment, the distance between past and present brke dwn.
A lcal elder said my great-grandfather left because the live harvest failed three years in a rw. He sailed t America t supprt his family back hme. He never returned. His family jined him years later. Since then, villagers had tended t the live tree, generatin after generatin, a reminder f thse wh had left.
As the sun set, I sat under the live tree. I thught f my grandmther, wh had always felt like a stranger in America, sticking t Italian traditins: making live il, speaking her dialect, hanging a dried live branch abve ur dr. I had thught these custms ld-fashined and meaningless. Nw I understd her.
Befre I left, I dug a small hle under the live tree that bridged me t the past and my culture, and placed a handful f American sil next t the Sicilian earth. Large language mdels, r LLMs, are AI systems that pwer chatbts such as ChatGPT. Increasingly, peple are turning t chatbts fr quick answers instead f traditinal web search tls like Ggle, Bing and Baidu. But a new study finds that peple wh use web searches t lk up infrmatin gain deeper knwledge than thse wh depend n AI chatbts.
Melumad, wh wrks at the University f Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, teamed up with Pennsylvanian neurscientist Jin Hyun t cmpare what peple learned thrugh LLMs against regular web searches. Sme search engines nw give an AI-generated answer alng with a list f websites. But a regular web search just gives a list f websites that have infrmatin related t what peple search fr.
Acrss seven experiments, the researchers randmized (随机分配) mre than 10,000 participants (参与者) t learn abut different tpics with either Ggle r ChatGPT. Afterward, the participants summarized what they’d learned and wrte it ut as advice fr a friend. The researchers then gauged whether the learned knwledge was “shallw” r “deep” based n what the participants reprted. Acrss all the experiments, ne pattern held: Knwledge gained frm chatbt summaries was shallwer than that btained nly frm web links (链接).
When peple use web searches, they analyse and summarize infrmatin. That means they figure ut hw infrmatin frm different surces fits tgether. “LLMs can reduce the lad f having t prcess infrmatin fr neself,” Melumad cncluded. “But this cmfrt cmes at the cst f develping deeper knwledge n a tpic.” Hwever, she nted, develpers culd design AI-using search tls that encurage users t dig deeper.
Peple culd fllw the links given by ChatGPT r fact-check the infrmatin ChatGPT gives. These actins wuld bring users much the same benefits as web searching des. S Oppenheimer, a prfessr at Carnegie Melln University, desn’t think peple need t give up LLMs. “The effectiveness f the tl depends n hw yu use it,” he said.

The idea f sending humans t Mars has attracted grwing attentin in recent years. Sme scientists and private cmpanies even hpe t build a human settlement there ne day. T many peple, Mars represents adventure, discvery, and the pssibility f a secnd hme fr humankind. Yet behind this exciting dream lies a serius questin: Is mving t Mars really the right chice?
One cncern is that humans may change Mars befre we truly understand it. If peple land there, they will certainly carry cuntless micrbes (微生物) frm Earth. These tiny frms f life culd spread acrss the Martian surface, making it difficult fr scientists t tell whether any life n Mars is truly native. Even wrse, if simple Martian life des exist, human arrival might destry it befre it is fully discvered. In that sense, ging t Mars t sn culd damage ne f the very gals f explratin.
There is als the questin f whether humans are even the best explrers fr such a task. Rbts have already achieved remarkable results n Mars, discvering signs f water and materials related t life. Cmpared with humans, they are far cheaper and d nt need air, fd, r water t survive. They are nt trubled by lneliness, bredm, r dangerus radiatin (辐射), either. As artificial intelligence cntinues t develp, rbtic missins may becme even mre effective in places that are t risky fr peple.
At the same time, Earth itself still demands ur full attentin. Climate change, energy prblems, and ther glbal challenges remain far frm being slved. Building a human settlement n Mars wuld cst a large amunt f mney, while life there wuld still be extremely difficult because f thin air, weak gravity, and high radiatin. Fr these reasns, imprving life n Earth is clearly a mre pressing and reasnable chice than attempting t escape t Mars.
Mars is certainly wrth explring, but fr nw, human settlement may be a step we are nt ready t take.

Others nrmally avid financial discussins r pprtunities, fearing their financial situatin fails t live up t scial expectatins. These behavirs cme frm deep beliefs that peple’s wrth depends n their mney.
Given the situatin, what shall we d t slve the prblem? 18 Recgnizing that mney is a tl rather than a measure f persnal value allws individuals t make financial decisins based n lgic rather than emtin. Financial setbacks shuld be viewed as learning experiences rather than failures, and financial success shuld nt be the nly determinant f happiness.
19 By gaining financial knwledge, setting clear financial gals, and making infrmed decisins, individuals can feel in charge f their financial jurney instead f letting mney decide their self-wrth.
Separating mney frm persnal value helps peple make smarter financial chices. 20 Instead, they can fcus n their lng-term gals and persnal values. Financial success shuld be abut freedm and security, nt abut prving yur value t thers.
