Using data frm this prgram, Argyris Stringaris and his clleagues at University Cllege Lndn analyzed utcmes fr mre than 1.5 millin peple wh used the talking therapies frm 2015 t 2019. Just ver 1.2 millin f them were aged 25 t 65, while the rest were aged 16 t 24.
The researchers used tw standard surveys t measure hw symptms changed after therapy. In peple aged 16 t 24, survey scres imprved by abut 35%, cmpared t abut 41% in thse aged 25 t 65. The yunger grup was als abut 20-25% less likely t achieve recvery r significant imprvement.
Several factrs culd play a rle in these differences, such as a generatinal gap in the effects f things like scial media n mental well-being. Data als indicate that yung peple are mre likely t skip scheduled sessins, leading t prer utcmes.
Still, it is imprtant t cnsider the benefit f therapy, Stringaris says. “Yu’re getting yung peple at a time f enrmus transitin in their lives, as they’re ging in and ut f clleges and trying t get jbs, with things quite unstable in terms f their living circumstances,” he says. “This bserved difference des nt necessarily mean that the benefit f therapy is lwer fr yung peple than fr lder adults, because withut treatment they might have been even wrse ff.”
Thusands f yung peple might have recvered if they had respnded t treatment as effectively as lder adults, Stringaris adds. “It is critical that mental health services think abut tailring their pathways twards care that better suits yunger peple.”

T find ut, researchers frm Shanghai Jia Tng University carried ut a study. Participants listened t a range f sunds thrugh headphnes while backgrund nise was played. Their task was t adjust the vlume until they culd just barely hear the sund ver the nise. The experiment included different visual cnditins: eyes clsed, eyes pen lking at a blank screen, viewing a still image related t the sund, and watching a matching vide.
The results were cntrary t expectatins. Clsing the eyes actually made it harder t detect faint sunds, while watching a matching vide significantly imprved hearing sensitivity.
T understand why this happens, the researchers tracked brain activity during the tests. They fund that clsing the eyes puts the brain int a state that increases filtering (过滤) f incming infrmatin. This desn’t just reduce backgrund nise — it als blcks the very sunds peple are trying t hear. Researcher Yu Huang explained, “The internal fcus frm eye clsure wrks against yu in nisy settings, leading t ver-filtering. This effect seems specific t nisy settings. In quiet settings, clsing the eyes may still help. But since daily life envirnment is ften nisy, keeping yur eyes pen may be the better strategy.
