Clumbia scientists have fund specialized neurns (神经元) in the brainstem f mice that rder the animals t stp eating.
“These neurns are unlike any ther neurn invlved in regulating appetite,” says Alexander Nectw, wh led the research in the Nectw lab. “Other neurns in the brain are usually restricted t sensing fd put int ur muth, r hw fd fills the gut (肠道). The neurns we fund are special in that they seem t integrate all these different pieces f infrmatin and mre.”
Previus researchers had fund the decisin-making cells are lcated in the brainstem, but the research ended there. With new single-cell techniques, Nectw’s team sptted previusly unrecgnized cells that had similar characteristics t ther neurns invlved in regulating appetite.
T study what these cells are sensing t kick them int actin, the researchers measured their activity as the mice went abut their day. “Essentially these neurns can smell fd, see fd, feel fd in the muth and in the gut, and interpret all the gut hrmnes (荷尔蒙) that are released in respnse t eating,” Nectw says. “And ultimately, they use all f this infrmatin t decide when enugh is enugh.”
Next, the researchers used a technique called ptgenetics, which invlves editing the neurns s they culd be switched n and ff with light. When they used light t activate them, the mice slwed dwn their eating.
Thugh the specialized neurns were fund in mice, Nectw says their lcatin in the brainstem, a part f the brain that is essentially the same in humans, suggests that it is highly likely that humans have the same neurns. “We think it’s a majr new entry pint t understanding what it means t be full, hw that cmes abut, and hw that is used t end a meal,” Nectw adds. “And we hpe that it culd be used fr besity (肥胖症) treatment dwn the rad.”
