Krithi Karanth, a cnservatin bilgist heading India’s Centre fr Wildlife Studies, has earned the 2026 Rlex Natinal Gegraphic Explrer f the Year wing t her remarkable devtin t champining the rle that cmmunity engagement plays in prtecting wildlife.
Grwing up in India, Karanth witnessed a severe reality. Crwded with 1.4 billin peple, India is als a strnghld fr wildlife. The human-wildlife bnds are delicate t maintain. When elephants damage crps r lepards attack dmestic animals, the fallut ften ruins families, wh will get back at them in return.
In view f such a paradx, Karanth realized that simply prtecting habitats was insufficient and that winning residents’ hearts and minds mattered equally. Having spent years develping nvel strategies t help peple live alngside dangerus animals, she launched Wild Seve, a platfrm allwing victims t request financial claims frm the gvernment when wildlife destrys their crps r prperty. Trained field staff dcument lsses, file claims and track cases, as they’re prcessed by gvernment fficials. Wild Seve has helped arund 17,000 families, which, Karanth argues, reduces lcals’ likelihd f hunting ut f anger.
Nevertheless, merely easing unfavrable cnsequences didn’t wipe ut anger. Sme families kept hunting t release their bitterness. That’s why Karanth turned t early-stage educatin. Partnering with lcal schls, she created Wild Shaale, a prgram designed t inspire curisity abut and respect fr wild creatures by means f games, stry-sharing and artistic activities. The prject helps students get familiar with surrunding wildlife, analyze the rts f human-wildlife tensin and master prper cping methds. Launched as a pilt prgram in dzens f classrms back in 2018, Wild Shaale has been available in rughly 1,600 Indian schls.
“Karanth has fueled a mvement f hpe acrss India,” says Natinal Gegraphic’s CEO. “She is redefining hw humans cexist with nature. Having residents wh tlerate the presence f wild animals is a massive victry.” Next, Karanth intends t spread her cncepts beynd India and nurture yung glbal envirnmental guardians.

Rain sunds melt ur stress and put us t sleep, but fr rice plants, the pitter-patter f raindrps is mre like a mrning alarm. As water falls nt sil r water, the vibratins (震动) are far strnger undergrund than n the surface. New research suggests plants take advantage f this wake-up call.
Published in Scientific Reprts, the latest research prves rain sunds can make rice seeds germinate (萌芽) faster than usual. This prvides the first direct cnfirmatin that plants can sense surrunding sund signals and make active respnses.
Previus studies have suggested plants may pssess the ability t think, see and hear. Hwever, there’s n fact-based evidence fr the direct cause-and-effect link between envirnmental changes and plants’ real-time respnses. This new study successfully fills the gap. “The seeds can sense sund in ways that can help them survive,” said Nichlas Makris, authr f the study.
In their experiment, the researchers wanted t make sure the seeds were respnding t the sund f rain and nt t its water. Given that rice is usually grwn in water, they chse t fcus n rice seeds. They put 8,000 rice seeds in shallw water. One grup was kept in ttal quietness, while the ther was expsed t light, mderate and heavy raindrps t cpy natural rainfall. The results shwed that the latter grup germinated 30 t 40 percent faster than thse in silence.
In plants, cellular structures called statliths are respnsible fr external sensing. They shift and settle at the bttm f plant cells, helping the rganisms detect changes in their psitin and stability and tell germinating seeds in which directin t grw their rts. Makris and his team therized rain sunds underwater might prduce large enugh vibratins t mve the statliths and pssibly stimulate germinatin in rice seeds.
The team hpes t further investigate whether ther envirnmental cues, such as wind, culd be sensed by plants in similar ways.

A.Hw raindrps awake seeds.B.What cntrls plant rt systems.
C.Hw plants adjust cell structures.D.Why plants adapt t surrundings.
In a wrld with eight billin peple, why shuld yur neighbr’s new Tesla r the new bk deal they struck feel like they smehw cme at yur wn expense?
It’s nt envy in the abstract that aruses these emtins, nr is it sme inbrn balance f fairness being brken by their win. Indeed, n ne alive tday is waking up upset abut Rckefeller’s past frtune and relatively few are pacing ver Alisher Usmanv’s palaces by the Caspian. What truly disturbs us is the success frm peple clse t us, wh share similar life backgrunds and living circles.
Frm an evlutinary perspective, distant success rarely disturbs us while similar peple’s prgress easily breaks ur inner balance. Accrding t Len Festinger’s scial cmparisn thery, peple d nt evaluate their self-wrth withut cntext; instead, they judge themselves by cmparing with similar peple wh are cmparable t them. When they mve ahead rapidly, we easily feel left behind and trapped in negative emtins. Brain scans als prve scial cmparisn activates the same brain areas as physical pain.
Anther frm f hidden envy is that peple ften rt fr the underdg. Widespread in sprts, plitics and business fields, the underdg effect is ften mistaken as a pure emtinal preference. Actually, peple supprt the weak t stick t their sense f fairness and self-identity. Mre essentially, it riginates frm an ancient survival strategy: Siding with ptential rising frces helps peple gain mre scial resurces and advantages in grup cmpetitin.
Envy is inbrn human nature rather than a mral failure. It exists in all human scieties and deserves n shame. Cntaining envy r dismissing its existence will nly lead t inner cnsumptin. Instead, we shuld treat envy as a reminder f persnal ambitin. The lnging fr thers’ achievements reflects ur wn pursuit f success and public recgnitin. Transfrming such negative feelings int practical mtivatin is the mst effective way t break free frm the trap f meaningless cmparisn and realize steady self-grwth.
12.Why des the authr mentin Rckefeller and Alisher Usmanv in paragraph 2?
      A.T reflect unfair scial reality.
B.T demnstrate wealth brings us stress.
      C.T cntrast different scial classes.
D.T shw distant success bthers us little.
13.What accunts fr peple’s indifference t remte success?
      A.Lack f cmparability.B.Lss f ppularity.
      C.Difficulty in attainment.D.Bundary f visin.
14.What can be inferred abut the underdg effect?
      A.It’s driven by mere mercy.
      B.It’s a barrier t scial prgress.
      C.It’s rted in practical wisdm.
      D.It’s a symbl f blind prejudice.
      15.What wuld the authr advcate?
      A.Eliminating envy firmly.B.Ignring thers’ prgress.
      C.Redirecting envy psitively.D.Rejecting thers’ evaluatins.
Smetimes yu meet a persn in a cmmunity space and just knw: Yu. I want t be friends with yu. The cnversatin flws. They make yu laugh. Yu want t knw mre abut them. S yu say, “Hey, we shuld get tgether smetime!” 16
Kat Vells, authr f We Shuld Get Tgether: The Secret t Cultivating Better Friendships, has a better idea. “Pull ut yur calendar, pick a time, pick a thing t d tgether and fllw thrugh,” she says. “‘Smetime’ is indefinite. 17 ”
Anther cmmn mistake peple make when trying t build a new friendship is that they wait t lng t see that new acquaintance again. 18 Research shws it takes ver 30 hurs t build a casual friendship and these hurs are best spent within the first few weeks. Early frequent cntact helps new friendships stick.
19 Skip rdinary cffee meetups when hanging ut. They are unremarkable and prvide few cnversatin tpics. Pick fun activities like a classic car shw r vegan fd truck festival instead. Studies shw unique experiences help strangers bnd much faster than rutine nes, creating precius shared memries fr bth sides.
What if yu start hanging ut and realize yu dn’t actually like the new acquaintance? 20 Yu can decide whether t stp seeing them r t mve them int the uter ring f cnnectin. If yu’ve made the friend and want t sustain the friendship, keep in mind fur key elements Vells puts frward: mutual interests, frequent meetings, in-persn cmpany and jint cmmitment.
A.Casual plans als lead t actual meetups.
B.Yu might as well cut ff all ties fr gd.
C.In the meantime, the attractin may wear ff.
D.This ends up ging nwhere mst f the time.
E.The mre specific yu are, the easier it is t meet.
F.As fr yur get-tgethers, pt fr smething distinctive.
G.It’s OK nt t take this train all the way t the bestie statin.
