    B
“Can’t you take a picture of me?” I turned to my husband and couldn’t help asking him, at a loss why he didn’t volunteer to take my picture. We were on a long-planned, once-in-a-lifetime trip to Venice. I couldn’t stop taking pictures-263 so far. Everything was beautiful: the bright green water, the bridges topped with Venetians looking at their phones, the shining of sun or low-lying morning mist on water. I had to capture the joyful decorative beauty. My phone was packed with such pictures as I would never remove. My husband was not taking pictures. But we were walking along a particularly attractive canal(运河)in the sun. I had lots of my husband: wouldn’t it be nice to have a few of me? He helped happily, but I looked awkward. It showed 1 had to ask.
Men don’t take photos. At least most men don’t seem to take phone pictures the way women do. So I wonder why. On one level, my husband is right. Holding up your phone is an imperfect and inelegant way of capturing a place or a feeling. That is the classic criticism of the digital age: We are recording, not living. He is good at being in the moment and happy to simply enjoy it.
But I’m right too. Memory is unreliable: It is a story we construct for ourselves, not an objective truth. If I think about the year 2020, I remember fear, sadness and sitting at my desk seven days a week. But if 1 look through my pictures, it was all stupid family games, terrible haircuts and strange but lovely socially distant breakfasts. My phone’s camera is also a powerful corrective to my natural pessimism(悲观). My brain will probably regard 2022 as the permanent crisis, a time of global sadness and fear. But my pictures will tell a different but also true story: that perfect vegetable I grew; the sons I also grew. That is why I do it-if happiness doesn’t come naturally, sometimes you need to take its picture.

The slogan of a University of Northern Iowa clothing exchange also serves as the perfect description of a fashion currently popular among students: thrifting-trading clothes with friends informally or through campus events and websites such as Swapstyle or at a thrift store.
Students are becoming increasingly vocal champions of this creative and commercial effort and the culture it represents. The act of thrifting is at the heart of the rise in students’ do-it-yourself (DIY) fashion shows and themed parties in which clothes must be handmade-composed of older, organic or recyclable items.
More broadly, the thrifting movement represents a generational switch built on five basic beliefs: old is new, mixing is far better than matching exchanging beats shopping, the best things in life are free (or incredibly cheap), and social responsibility is the new black.
According to recent campus and professional press reports, more students are thrifting so they can remain fashionable during the economic downturn.
They are giving up brand loyalty. They are also increasingly unwilling or unable to buy things at full price. Instead, they are seeking discounted ways to stand out stylistically, including making certain classic clothes the next big things.
“It’s often hard to find two of the same clothing items in a thrift store. You can leave knowing that the special outfit you are getting for your major event, no one will have,” Saint Xavier University rising senior Sydney Bennett confirms. “Because a lot of the items in thrift stores are classic, you will have a chance to showcase a ‘recycled style’ that is just like new for our generation.”
To this end, Bennett calls thrifting “a treasure hunt and shopping experience rolled into one ”.
    8. Which item of the following will disqualify you for DIY fashion shows?
    A. A newly-bought dress. B. A pair of washed-out jeans.
    C. An out-dated sweater. D. A second-hand cotton jacket.
    9. What do we know about the thrifting movement?
    A. It’ll damage economy. B. It’s a temporary success.
    C. It was started by the government. D. It reflects a change in philosophy of life.
    10. What’s the advantage of thrifting in thrift stores according to Bennett?
    A. Getting anything for nothing. B. Staying loyal to the brand.
    C. Seeking out unique items. D. Buying as many clothes as possible.
    11. What’s the purpose of writing this passage?
    A. To evaluate a rule. B. To clarify a concept.
    C. To introduce a new trend. D. To recommend a way of life.
    D
Exercising with a friend is more motivating than going unaccompanied, according to new research. It also suggests interacting with active people can influence the sedentary to become more active.
The research was developed by a team led by Ensela Mema, PhD from Kean University in New Jersey. According to the researchers, the 2018 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services guidelines recommending the types and amounts of physical activity haven’t inspired much improvement in daily exercise routines.
So, Mema and other researchers looked at previous research showing social interactions with contemporaries can play a key role in promoting physical activity within a community. They developed a mathematical model simulating how social interactions can affect a population’s exercise trends over time.
Using data from the U.S. Military Academy, the simulations showed populations with decreasing physical activity and sedentary behavior-always sitting and rarely moving-were most common in the absence of social interactions. However, when simulations included social interactions between sedentary and active people, they became more physically active in the long term.
“We have traditionally directed physical activity interventions by engaging sedentary individuals to become more active,” Mema said. “Our model suggests that focusing on the active population to sustain their activity and increasing their interactions with sedentary people could stimulate higher levels of overall physical activity in the population.”
Experts say there’s not only an increased level of enjoyment with group exercise, there’s also accountability, making it more likely that people show up and get results. Depending on the individual’s personality, expectations, experience, and motivation, everyone can respond differently and uniquely to a more social exercise environment. Some individuals are more internally accountable, where they will never miss a commitment they make to themselves, and others are more externally accountable, where they are more likely to exercise when they have an external accountability system.
Whereas some individuals may feel competitive, that sense of competition can be friendly or serious. Others can compare themselves with others, which can either lower or increase confidence depending on the context.
    12. What do the underlined words “the sedentary” in paragraph 1 refer to?
    A. Sporty persons. B. Inactive individuals.
    C. Energetic youths. D. Unconfident singles.
13 What may be the problem with the 2018 guidelines about physical activity?
    A. They lacked necessary factual basis.
    B. They were targeted at residents in communities.
    C. Too many ways of exercise were recommended.
    D. Social interactions’ effect on exercise wasn’t considered.
    14. What did experts explain in paragraph 6?
    A. Why group exercise is effective.
    B. How to engage more people to exercise.
    C. Why overall physical activity contributes to health.
    D. How traditional interventions inspire people to be competitive.
    15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. Exercise More, Sit Less
    B. Doing Workouts with a Partner Works
    C. Communicating with People Benefits Your Health
    D. Social Exercise Environment Strengthens Competitiveness

David was a windsurfer, who was serious and hardworking. He dreamed of becoming a city champion of the annual Teenager Windsurfing Race. To achieve it, he barely missed a single game or practice whatever the weather. After months of intense training, the big day finally arrived!
The beach was crowded with the excited audience, including reporters and photographers. The speaker system was announcing the names of the windsurfers, calling them to get ready for the race. And there was David, in a line with other windsurfers, all of them moving nervously up and down on the waves behind an imaginary starting line. They were all fighting for the best position to start and were tense as a result, ignoring the vast sea they were on.
The moment the starter’s signal sounded David was off, so natural and quick. He pulled hard at his sail to race just ahead of the group. As he picked up speed, gliding (滑行) over the waves, he felt the familiar joy and freedom that windsurfing always gave him. What he loved was simply being out at sea. He could hardly stop himself from shouting out in excitement, rushing to the finishing line for the first.
“Go! David!” The wind carried over a familiar voice. He looked around and spotted his elder sister Jessica on her speedboat upwind of him cheering for him. She waved at David and he nodded his head in acknowledgement, even though he knew she was too far away to see him. Just as he turned away, however, out of the comer of his eye, he saw smoke behind the speedboat, on the shore. Knowing that the smoke could tell him the direction the wind was blowing, he decided to study it for a moment out of habit. Just as he was getting a better sense of how to use the wind to his advantage, he saw it.
    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

    Form a Good Class Habit
The programme “Form a Good Class Habit” launched three months ago has aroused great interest among our students, since then our life has taken on a new dimension.
In the past, I always started to get my work done till the last minute. When the programme began, I tried hard to force myself to do everything in time. With the encouragement from the people around me as well as my efforts, everything has changed — I’ve made significant progress in my studies and made more friends in my class. I’m really grateful for the programme now.
    第二节(满分25分)
    【47题答案】
    【答案】
Not just the smoke but a big fire! David couldn’t believe his eyes. It occurred to him that it was from a restaurant where he once did a part-time job and that all the staff might be among the audience. He looked back at the beach, where all of the audience were too attentive to the race to be conscious of the fire. It was then that he made a resolution to turn around, passing by the other windsurfers and racing towards the shore, rather than the finishing line.
The other windsurfers were far ahead of him at that time. Apparently, this promising teenager had withdrawn the Race. Many confused people who noticed his strange behavior also spotted the shocking smoke and fire on the shore. The teenager rushed towards the fire, followed by many adults, including the staff. More hands made light work. They put out the fire before it was too late, minimizing the losses. Due to his contribution, the organizing committee awarded David the sportsmanship Award. All the audience applauded him for his acceptance speech: “I don’t regret losing the chance of becoming a champion to help others.”
