Her bld pressure sht up and the dctr suggested lifelng medicatin. “That mment was a wake-up call,” she recalls. “I didn’t want t submit t a dependent ld age.” Determined t turn her cnditin arund naturally, she pted fr physical activities and jined a gym, a turning pint in her life. “What truly astnished me was hw much ur bdies can change with right effrts and cnsistent self-care,” she said.
Tday, her daily rutine which reflects the discipline she’s well established begins at 4 a. m. with a refreshing glass f water, fllwed by a handful f nuts. Then it’s time fr gym training, where she fcuses n strength sessins and deadlifts. She alternates between yga, running and walks thrughut the week, ensuring a mix f activities.
Ashu launched her scial media jurney with ccasinal Instagram psts under @ Her vides featuring wrkuts, recipes, and an active lifestyle quickly went viral, inspiring millins. Katherine Rundell’s fllw-up t 2023’s Impssible Creatures—a nvel that sees tw children trying t prtect “the wrld’s last magical place”, which is hme t all manner f imaginary beings—ges hand in hand with the previus ne. But rather than a fantasy stry, Vanishing Treasures is a nnfictin survey f sme f the seemingly impssible creatures wh call ur planet hme. As the title suggests, many f ur neighbrs are disappearing at an alarming rate mstly due t humanity’s irresistible greed and desire t dminate whatever is beautiful and rare.
In this bk, Katherine Rundell takes us n a tur f the wrld’s mst awe-inspiring animals currently facing extinctin. She cmbines histry and persnal experiences with a vivid strytelling style. Her wn bservatins and interactins clr her descriptin f each animal in an accessible way, which is as enjyable t read as the facts. Having witnessed the Amur lepard’s stealthy apprach t its victim while tracking it, Rundell writes, “The lepard glides thrugh the underbrush like a shadw, its pwerful muscles wrking in perfect harmny with the silence f the frest. Each step is a silent prmise f bth beauty and danger.”
The bk unflds a wealth f wnders. The seahrse cuples meet each mrning fr a dance, changing clrs befre ging their separate ways. The wd frg survives winter by allwing itself t freeze slid, its heartbeat slwing until it stps altgether. When spring cmes, the heart kick-starts itself naturally back t life.
Regrettably, these extrardinary animals are each n the brder f extinctin. This brilliant essay cllectin fcusing n 23 unusual and underappreciated creatures serves as a frceful call insisting we re-envisin the wrld arund us—t truly recgnize the fascinating animals, alng with their hidden histries and remarkable capabilities and abve all, t treasure the immeasurable frtune f inhabiting the same grund as such disappearing treasures.
Beautifully illustrated, and full f intellect, Vanishing Treasures is a chance t be awestruck and lvestruck, t engage with the wrld’s beauty and its delicate nature and its strangeness.

      A. They’re extinct species.
      B. They’re fictinal but magical.
      C. They inhabit different planets.
      D. They’re real but endangered.
      29. What des the underlined wrd “stealthy” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Secretive.B. Hesitant.
      C. Awkward.D. Obvius.
      30. Why des the authr mentin the seahrse cuples and the wd frg?

      B. T prve animals’ adaptability.
      C. T indicate animals’ amazing features.
      D. T cntrast animals’ survival skills
      31. What is Vanishing Treasures aimed at?
      A. Driving envirnmental actins.
      B. Sharing persnal adventures.
      C. Reslving human-animal cnflicts.
      D. Prmting eclgical appreciatin.
      D
Scientists at the University f Surrey have made a breakthrugh in batteries that nt nly stre mre energy but help tackle greenhuse gas emissins. Lithium-CO2 “breathing” batteries release pwer while capturing carbn dixide, ffering a better alternative that may ne day utperfrm tday’s lithium-in batteries.
Until nw, Lithium-CO2 batteries have faced setbacks in efficiency-wearing ut quickly and relying n expensive rare materials. Hwever, researchers frm Surrey have fund a way t vercme these issues by using a lw-cst catalyst (催化剂) called CPM. Using cmputer mdelling and lab experiments, tests shwed this simple change allwed the battery t stre cnsiderably mre energy, charge with far less pwer and run fr ver 100 cycles.
Dr Gadkari, c-authr f the study, said, “One f the biggest challenges with these batteries is smething called ‘verptential’ - the extra energy needed t get the reactin ging. Yu can think f it like cycling uphill befre yu can cast. CPM flattens that hill, meaning the battery lses far less energy during each charge and discharge.”
T understand why the CPM wrked s well, researchers used tw appraches. First, they tk apart the battery after charging and discharging t study the chemical changes inside, finding that lithium carbnate, the chemical substances frmed when the battery absrbs CO2, culd be reliably built up and remved-an essential feature fr lng-term use. They then turned t cmputer mdelling using density functinal thery (DFT) t explre hw the reactins unfld n the material surface. Results shwed hw the CPM’s stable, hley structure ffered the ideal surface fr key chemical reactins.
“What’s exciting abut this discvery is that it cmbines strng perfrmance with simplicity. We’ve shwn it’s pssible t build efficient lithium-CO2 batteries in large numbers using affrdable, expandable materials n rare metals required,” said Dr Gadkari. If cmmercialised, these batteries culd help cut emissins frm vehicles and industrial surces. Scientists even imagine they culd perate n Mars, where the atmsphere is 95% CO2. The discvery pens new drs fr develping even better lw-cst, easy-t-make battery materials and marks a milestne step tward real-wrld applicatins.
      32. What advantage des the new battery have ver ther batteries based n the first paragraph?
      A. It’s lighter.
      B. It’s mre user-friendly.
      C. It’s greener.
      D. It’s mre cst-effective.
33 What des Dr Gadkari want t clarify by referring t “cycling uphill”?
      A. A natural phenmenn.B. A technical term.
      C. An experimental stage.D. A theretical design.
      34. Hw did researchers cnfirm the effectiveness f CPM besides using mdelling?
      A. By testing its perfrmance n Mars.
      B. By assessing its durability via DFT.
      C. By bserving reactins in the battery.
      D. By analyzing lithium carbnate’ structure.
      35. What can we infer frm the last paragraph abut the new battery?
      A. It is prmising fr mass prductin.
      B. It is cnvenient t make and recycle
      C. Its efficiency relies n rare earth elements.
D Its use has reshaped the battery industry.
