A psychlgist at Stanfrd nce did an experiment. He assigned preschl children t three grups. The first grup watched adults play rudely with an inflatable clwn (充气小丑) called Bb; anther watched adults play quietly with a different ty while ignring Bb; and the third had n expsure t these adult rle mdels. Next, each f the children was left alne with Bb.
The results f the study were striking. Only the children in the first grup later kicked Bb, hit it with a stick, and sat n it just as they watched the adults d.
The abve study indicates kids may fllw suit if they see what thers d. That’s why rle mdels matter. When kids are expsed t rle mdels they can relate t, it helps them set ambitius gals. Dn’t assume kids knw they can be anything they want when they grw up.
Take myself fr example. “Angela, d yu think the US will elect a female president in yur lifetime?” Years ag, this was the last questin f the last interview fr a schlarship I didn’t win. Like mst children, my first rle mdels were in my family. My dad had a PhD in chemistry. My uncles and cuntless cusins were mstly dctrs r scientists. S, if yu’d asked me in, say, third grade, “Angela, culd yu becme a cllege prfessr smeday if yu tried?” Withut a bit f evidence that I’d be any gd at such a career, I’d have ndded my head.
S it’s quite necessary that we shuld g ut f ur way t expse kids t rle mdels, whether it’s an Olympic athlete r a CEO. Nw that we have ur first female vice-president, can the first female president be far behind?

She says, “I wanted t use my educatin in applied physics and materials engineering t d smething abut plastic waste pllutin. But I was very clear the slutin had t be practical, sustainable and affrdable. The best way t d this was by channeling the waste int the cnstructin space and finding the mst efficient and affrdable material t build hmes.”
Her cmpany, Gjenge Makers, nw hires 112 peple and prduces ver 1,500 bricks a day, which are made using a mix f plastic prducts that can’t be reprcessed r recycled. Migratry (迁移的) birds are specially adapted t find their way ver extreme distances. Nw, the new research f Kaspar Delhey and ther researchers has discvered an unexpected way that migratry birds keep their cl during such backbreaking jurneys: lighter-clred feathers(羽毛).
“We fund acrss nearly all species f birds, migratry species tend t be lighter clred than nn-migratry species,” said Delhey. “We think that lighterfeather clratin is selected in migratry species because it reduces the risk f verheating when expsed t sunshine. Lighter surfaces absrb less heat than darker nes, as anybdy wearing dark clthes n a sunny day can demnstrate! This wuld be particularly imprtant fr lng-distance migrants that undertake extensive flights during which they cannt stp t rest in the shade.”
Delheyand his cwrkers had been studying the effects f climate n bird clratin. Their earlier studies shwed that, in general, lighter clred birds are fund where temperatures are high and there is little shade. That’s in part because the birds’lighter feathers help t keep them cler in the ht sun. Then the researchers came acrss studies by thers shwing that sme birds fly higher during the day cmpared t at night.
“Because flyinghigher is likely cstly, these changes require an explanatin,”Delhey says. “One pssibility was that flying higher, where it is clder, wuld ffset the heat absrbed by thefeathers when the sun was shining.”
If s, they realized, anther way t reduce the risk f verheating wuld be t absrb less slar radiatin in the first place. It raised a questin: have migratry speciesevlved(进化)lighter feathers?
T find ut, they did much research. Their findings shw bird species get increasingly lighter as they migrate mre. S, resident birds tend t be darker than shrt-distance migrants. Shrt-distance migrants are darker than bird species that travel farther. Delhey said the effect suited different types f birds. The same held true in waterbirds and grund-living birds, t.
The findings are anther reminder f the imprtant rle f temperature and climate factrs mre bradly in the evlutin f shaping theclratinf animals. They als help better understand the impacts f glbal warming and underlying adaptive evlutinary respnses.
