A new study warns that artificial intelligence (AI) systems tend t give verly agreeable respnses, which culd negatively affect hw peple handle interpersnal prblems and scial cnflicts (矛盾).
T investigate this, researchers evaluated 11 large language mdels (LLMs), including ChatGPT and Gemini. They presented the mdels with thusands f harmful actins, such as illegal r dishnest behavir, and 2,000 requests based n real nline psts where the riginal writer was generally cnsidered wrng. The results were striking. On average, the AI mdels agreed with the user 49% mre ften than humans did. Even mre wrrying, the LLMs supprted harmful r bad and imprper behavir 47% f the time. This suggests that AI tls d nt stay fair and bjective. Instead, they tend t agree with users, even if users hld wrng pinins.
The team then had ver 2,400 peple chat with bth verly agreeable and nrmal AI mdels. Participants cnsidered the agreeable respnses as mre reliable, which strengthened their wn views and made them mre likely t use that AI again. Interestingly, they thught f bth types as equally bjective, suggesting they culd nt see when an AI was being t agreeable.
Why des this happen? One reasn is that LLMs rarely say “yu are right” directly. Instead, they use bjective academic language t indirectly supprt the user. Fr example, when a user asked if lying t his girlfriend abut being unemplyed fr tw years was wrng, the AI replied that his actins, while unusual, seemed t cme frm a genuine desire t understand the relatinship beynd mney.
The researchers wrry that increased reliance n AI fr persnal advice culd harm peple’s mral grwth and narrw their perspectives. Lead authr Myra Cheng warned, “AI makes it really easy t avid disagreements with ther peple, but such disagreements can be prductive fr creating healthy relatinships.” In effect, AI tells peple what they want t hear, nt what they need t hear.
