Then Teagan funded Shred Kids’ Cancer (SKC), a kid-centered nnprfit that empwers children t aid childhd cancer research and build supprtive cmmunities. T braden its influence, he channeled his passin fr music int the prject and hsted Shredfest benefit cncert, a landmark event featuring yuth musicians. Since then, the prject has gained a great deal f scial supprt. By 2024, SKC had raised ver $500,000 and funded nine clinical studies, inspiring cuntless children t set up lcal branches. Teagan said, “We measure ur impact nt by the mney raised but by hw many kids we affect and hw empwered they feel t change the wrld.”
At 17, he lst his friend Ashley, a bard member f SKC, due t the irreparable effects f chemtherapy — the same treatment given t adults and the nly available ptin — s he decided t act and imprve survival rates fr children with cancer.
Inspired by a cartn series The Magic Schl Bus, where a tiny bus travels inside the bdy, he wndered if cancer drugs culd be delivered like a tiny bus making specific stps, killing cancer cells (细胞) while sparing healthy nes. Micrplastics are pllutants fund almst everywhere in the envirnment: such as in pnds, lakes, rivers, waste-water, and the fish that we take in. T date, the mst typical methds f micrplastic remval have relied n filtratin (过滤). Hwever, it csts a pretty penny, gets blcked easily and des nt wrk fr thse smaller-sized nes.
Susie Dai, a researcher at the University f Missuri, cupled with her clleagues, has been devted t pineering a nvel slutin t remve thse micrplastics frm ur water. Recently, they used genetic adaptatin t create algae (simple water plants withut rts) prducing limnene, a naturally ccurring il respnsible fr the sweet smell f ranges, which makes the engineered algae water-repelling (拒水的). Because micrplastics are als water-repellent, the tw cme tgether just like magnets (磁铁) when they meet in water, frming large masses that sink t the bttm and create a slid layer f bimass easy t cllect and remve.
Researchers tested it by examining the cllectin f plystyrene (PS) micrplastic n the algae in water and fund 91.4% f PS was remved in just ne hur. Different micrplastics were als tried ut. Just like with PS, they saw interactins between the algae and Plyethylene (PE) and Plyethylene Terephthalate (PET), prving the algae wrked fr mst micrplastics. “By remving the micrplastics, cleaning the wastewater and eventually using the remved micrplastics t create biplastic prducts fr gd, we can handle three issues with ne apprach,” Dai said.
While the research is still in the early stage, the team is already grwing algae in cntrlled bireactrs (生物反应器) designed fr large-scale applicatins. One such system, a 100-liter unit named “Shrek”, is being adapted t treat micrplastic-plluted water.
Lking ahead, the team plans t expand this technlgy by building larger versins f these bireactrs, which culd be adapted t treat wastewater in a better way and help remve greater varieties f envirnmental pllutants. Fr nw, this is an exciting step tward the upcycling f micrplastics — turning pllutants int resurces fr biplastics!

During Wrld War II, the US military faced a questin: where shuld they add armr (盔甲) t their bmbers t prtect them frm enemy fire? One apprach was t examine the planes that returned frm missins and strengthen the areas that shwed the mst bullet (子弹) hles. The cnclusin seemed bvius: add armr t these lcatins.
But Abraham Wald, an American mathematician, saw a serius drawback in this lgic. He pinted ut that the military was nly lking at the planes that made it back. The truly imprtant data was missing: the planes that were sht dwn. The absence f bullet hles n the engines f the returning planes wasn’t because they weren’t being hit there. It was because planes hit in thse spts didn’t survive. This is what is called survivrship bias (幸存者偏差).
Abraham Wald’s insight changed hw the military apprached its analysis. He demanded them t stp fcusing n the survivrs and instead cnsider the nn-survivrs. By hardening the areas that were undamaged n the returning planes (the engines), they were truly prtecting the key parts. Wald’s wrk is believed t have saved hundreds f lives and remains an example fr understanding this bias.
In fact, survivrship bias is deeply rted in daily life. News utlets, bks, and scial media feeds are filled with tales f success, making them readily available in ur minds and leading us t vervalue the ppularity f success. As scial creatures, we ften lk t thers t determine hw t act. When we see a crwd f peple celebrating a “survivr” — be it a successful CEO r a winning investment strategy — we feel a tractin t fllw alng.
T avid this bias, we shuld learn t lk fr the “silent data” f failures. This data is ften where the mst valuable lessns are buried. Meanwhile, we must check hw data is selected and whether it presents a cmplete picture. Only by seeing bth winners and lsers can we understand reality clearly and make wise decisins.
12.Hw des the authr intrduce the tpic?
A.By telling a stry.B.By examining lgic.
C.By recrding histry.D.By quting an expert.
13.What cnditin may survivrship bias lead t?
A.The updates are hidden.B.The database is masked.
C.The judgement is cluded.D.The successes are ignred.
14.What des the underlined wrd “tractin” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Pull.B.Change.C.Surprise.D.Gal.
15.What is suggested t avid survivrship bias?
A.Trusting survivrs.B.Celebrating the failures.
C.Accepting the reality.D.Analyzing cmplete data.
