Winning a remarkable science award is really a big deal, especially if yu are 12 years ld. But Shanya Gill, a middle schler frm San Jse, Califrnia, wn the tp award in the Therm Fisher Scientific Junir Innvatrs Challenge fr designing a fire detectin system that is superir t existing nes, as stated in the press release.
“The tp winners have exhibited bundless curisity,” Maya Ajmera, president and CEO f Sciety fr Science, said in the press release. Their remarkable research nt nly reflects their talent but als paves the way fr an exciting new future.

After she studied fire statistics, Shanya spent ver a year develping a fire detectin system that she believes culd have prevented the fire. Unlike traditinal smke detectrs that sense active fires frm the smke in the air, Shanya’s thermal (热的) imaging device is designed t stp fires frm ccurring.
With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny cmputer, the device detects when a heat surce has been left unattended fr ten minutes and sends a text message warning. Creating the prttype (原型) was difficult and the hardest part was the prgramming. I had tw designs, and my first design cmpletely failed. “ It was a really big challenge I had t g thrugh, ” she said. The final device utperfrms smke detectrs in speed and accuracy. Shanya wants t bring the csts dwn t make it even mre cmmn than previus smke detectrs.
“Shanya saw a prblem, went after it and tried t slve it, and that’s what we need t encurage with all yung peple, ” said Ajmera. She als highlighted the significance f supprting individuals, especially girls and kids f clr, in STEM fields, as research indicates that many yung peple drp ut f these areas.

We’ve all experienced the sudden urge t check ur phne, and a new study frm Duke University might explain why. The research suggests that this isn’t just a bad habit, but rather that ur smartphnes might be reshaping ur brain’s reward system, making us seek infrmatin in a way similar t hw we seek fd r mney.
The study invlved peple playing a simple game where they had t chse between different symbls that ffered certain chances f receiving a reward. The rewards were either mney, the pprtunity t learn a randm piece f infrmatin (like a fun fact), r nthing. Meanwhile, the participants’ brain activity was mnitred using FMRI scans.
The results were striking. The researchers fund that the brain’s dpamine-rich reward centers, particularly the vmPFC (前额叶皮层), became active when participants were expecting bth mnetary rewards and infrmatinal rewards. This suggests that ur brains prcess the pprtunity t gain new infrmatin as a valuable reward itself. The desire fr infrmatin fllwed a classic “law f demand” — the mre expensive (in terms f effrt r cst) it was t get infrmatin, the less peple sught it, just like any ther prduct.
“This finding helps explain the ‘checking’ behavir we see with smartphnes,” said the study’s lead authr. “Each time we slide dwn t refresh ur news feed r check updates, we are essentially seeking a small piece f new infrmatin. Our brain perceives this infrmatin as having ptential value, releasing dpamine (多巴胺) that makes the actin feel rewarding, even if the infrmatin itself is unimprtant.”
The researchers believe this insight is crucial fr understanding mdern behavirs. It indicates that the appeal f digital platfrms is nt merely abut scial cnnectin but taps int a fundamental bilgical mechanism. Hwever, they als warn that this cycle, if left unchecked, culd cntribute t prblematic internet use, as the brain gets caught in a cntinuus circle f seeking minr infrmatinal rewards.
Hw des the authr intrduce his tpic?
      A. By presenting a persnal experience.
      B. By describing a cmmn daily behavir.
      C. By quting a famus philspher’s saying.
      D. By cmparing ancient and mdern human behavirs.
      29. The authr mentins the “FMRI scans” in Paragraph 2 mainly t ________.
      A. emphasize the high cst f the scientific research
      B. describe the physical experience f the participants
      C. prvide bjective evidence fr the study’s cnclusins
      D. explain the cmplex technlgy used in mdern psychlgy
      30. What des the “law f demand” in Paragraph 3 indicate ?
      A. The harder it is t get infrmatin, the less peple want it.
      B. Peple always want mre infrmatin regardless f the cst.
      C. The value f infrmatin decreases as it becmes easier t get.
      D. Infrmatin is the mst valuable prduct in the mdern wrld.
      31. What is the ptential risk f the brain’s reward system fr infrmatin?
      A. It culd slw dwn ur thinking prcess.
      B. It might end up with t much screen time.
      C. It can damage ur brain’s fundamental structure.
      D. It will prevent us frm learning essential knwledge.
