“We live in an age when much infrmatin is engineered t capture clicks, nt cnvey truth r depth,” says Junyuan Hng, a prfessr at the Natinal University f Singapre wh wrked n the study. “We wndered: What will happen when AI mdels are trained with the same stuff?”
Hng and his clleagues fed different kinds f text t tw pen surce large language mdels in pretraining. They examined what happened when the mdels were fed a mix f highly“engaging,” r widely shared, scial media psts and nes that cntained striking r hyped (炒作的) text like “ww,” r “tday nly.” Then they used several different standards t evaluate the impact f this “junk” scial media diet n tw pen surce mdels: Meta’s Llama and Alibaba’sQwen.
The mdels fed junk text experienced a kind f AI brain rt. The results are imprtant fr the AI industry, Hng says, because mdel-builders might assume that scial media psts are a gd surce f training data fr their mdels. These findings mirrr research n human subjects, which shws that lw-quality nline cntent has a harmful effect n peple’s cgnitive abilities. The wide spread f the phenmenn witnessed“brain rt” named as the Oxfrd Dictinary wrd f the year 2024.
The researchers als fund that mdels damaged by lw-quality cntent culd nt easily be imprved thrugh retraining. “As mre AI-generated junk spreads acrss scial media, it influences the very data future mdels will learn frm,” Hng says. “Our findings shw that nce this kind f‘brain rt’sets in, subsequent clean training cannt cmpletely remve its bad influence.”

Synthetic (合成的) materials are widely used acrss varius fields, but mst are designed t perfrm nly a narrw range f tasks. Led by Hngta Sun, assistant prfessr at Penn State, a research team set ut t change that by develping a new technique prducing multifunctinal“smart synthetic skin.”
Octpuses (章鱼) can rapidly alter the lk and surface f their skin, which is a capability scientists have lng tried t cpy in man-made materials. These animals use such changes t integrate int their surrundings r cmmunicate with ne anther. Sun nted that the creature inspired them t develp a sft synthetic material with similar features thrugh halftne-encded 4D printing technlgy.
T realize this idea, the team transfrmed image infrmatin and data cllected frm ctpuses int digital cdes. By putting the digital instructins int the hydrgel (水凝胶) film, researchers culd cntrl hw the encded material changed its shape in respnse t different cnditins. This 4D printing technlgy finally led t the birth f a prgrammable smart skin with varius functins.
One eye-catching feature f the material is its ability t hide and reveal visual infrmatin. T demnstrate this, the team put an image f the Mna Lisa int the film. It shwed n visible image at first. But when the film was placed int ice water r gradually heated, the hidden image became clear. Besides visual switching, the smart skin als basts impressive shape-changing perfrmance. The team made flat films with the Mna Lisa image that culd later turn int three-dimensinal frms. As the films curved, the hidden image slwly appeared, shwing that changes in shape and visual appearance culd ccur at the same time within ne material.
“This interdisciplinary research at the intersectin f intelligent materials and mechanics pens new pprtunities with brad implicatins fr varius fields like sft rbtics and bimedical devices,” Sun said. Althugh it has nt yet reached the market n a large scale, it hlds great prmise fr future applicatins.

Maya was the kind f student wh was passinate abut cmputers and technlgy. While her classmates used their free time t scrll thrugh scial media r chat in the cafeteria, Maya was usually in the schl’s cmputer lab, develping apps r building small electrnic devices. She firmly believed that technlgy’s true purpse was t slve everyday prblems.
One windy Tuesday, as Maya walked acrss the main schl curtyard, she nticed a cmmn frustrating issue: the campus was littered with rubbish frm verflwing bins. A sudden gust f wind blew empty chip bags and paper cups acrss the grass. Nearby, Mr. Davis, the schl’s dedicated cleaner, was tiredly emptying a trash bin that was barely half-full, cmpletely unaware f an verflwing ne lcated just arund the crner.
On seeing that, Maya hurried ver t help him pick up the trash. Wiping sweat frm his frehead, Mr. Davis sighed, “With ver fifty bins acrss the campus, I spend half my day checking empty nes, cmpletely missing the nes that actually need immediate attentin.”
Suddenly, she recalled a recent cmputer science prject in which she and her friend Jane had experimented with remte sensrs. “What if the trash bins culd directly send a message t the cleaner?” she wndered.
The next day, Maya culdn’t wait t share her idea with Jane. She wanted t make a “smart” trash system by putting small sensrs inside the bins. These sensrs wuld measure the trash level and send real-time data t a tailred mbile app. The app wuld shw a map f the schl with different clrs fr the bins: green fr empty, yellw fr half-full, and red fr cmpletely full. This new system wuld save a lt f time and keep the schl much cleaner.
“D yu really think yu can make smething like that?” Jane asked, her face lighting up with a mixture f surprise and hpe. “I’m definitely ging t try,” Maya prmised, her eyes shining with determinatin.
