Anne’s gentle humr brke the ice as she acknwledged their unwillingness: “I knw yu hate the idea f being here.” Anne eased their mind that these feelings are cmmn. She highlighted hw devices allw families t cnnect acrss distances. The sessin was a resunding success.
Fast frward twelve years, and Anne is nw a belved instructr at varius retirement hmes thrughut Flrida. “It’s incredibly rewarding,” she shares, reflecting n the jy she sees in her clients’ eyes when they achieve a breakthrugh in understanding technlgy. Mst f the elderly appreciate learning frm smene clse t their age, finding cmfrt in the shared experiences and challenges. They learn better frm peers.

Cnservatin agencies wrldwide spend millins f dllars every year killing healthy wild animals that are classified as “nn-native” t prtect lcal ecsystems. New research frm Oxfrd University and Aarhus University in Denmark suggests that this cmmn practice may be fundamentally prblematic.
Scientists analyzed 221 studies cmparing hw native and intrduced large mammals affect plant cmmunities acrss the glbe. Their findings challenge decades f cnservatin thinking. Bth native and nn-native large herbivres (食草动物) shwed remarkably similar impacts n plant abundance and diversity. The research demnstrates that an animal’s eclgical effects relate mre t individual features than rigin. “We d nt find evidence t supprt the claim that native large herbivres have different impacts n ecsystems, specifically plant cmmunities in this case, than nn-native nes,” explained Dr. Jeppe Kristensen frm Oxfrd’s Envirnmental Change Institute.
The study uncvered a crucial element that cnservatin planners frequently ignre: individual animal bdy mass matters mre than cllective weight r native status. Small-bdied selective feeders like deer tend t reduce plant diversity regardless f whether they’re native r intrduced. Meanwhile, larger nn-selective feeders such as buffal typically enhance bidiversity by preventing any single plant species frm dminating an area.
This research expses a trubling cnservatin paradx (悖论). While many f these same species face extinctin in their native habitats, agencies spend enrmus resurces remving animals frm areas where they are cnsidered unwanted. The cntradictin raises serius questins abut current cnservatin pririties and resurce distributin. The remval effrts put many targeted “unwanted” animals at risk f further ppulatin declines within their hme ranges.
The research advcates fr a fundamental shift in cnservatin strategy. Rather than making decisins based n cultural ideas f belnging, scientists shuld judge all animals by the standards f functinal eclgy. “Our findings suggest it is time t start using the same standards t understand the effects f native and intrduced rganisms alike,” said lead authr Dr. Erick Lundgren frm Aarhus University. This apprach culd enhance bidiversity cnservatin while develping a deeper understanding f hw species cntribute t ecsystem health and recvery.
The research pens new perspectives fr cnservatin bilgy, suggesting that functinal features shuld guide management decisins rather than species rigin alne.
28. Hw did researchers reach their findings?
A. By cnducting field experiments.B. By tracking individual animals’ mvements.
C. By cmparing animal weights and diets.D. By analyzing existing glbal case studies.
29. What des the research reveal?
A. Animal’s bdy size matters mre than rigin.
B. Nn-native animals shw higher adaptability.
C. Native animals d mre damage t plant diversity.
D. Small herbivres face extinctin in native habitats.
30. What des the last paragraph mainly fcus n?
A. Appraches t increasing species diversity.B. Critical factrs in ecsystem management.
C. The attentin t animals’ functinal features.D. The enduring influence f cultural belngings.

A. Stp killing Nn-Native Animals NwB. A New Study n Large Herbivres’ Diets
C. What Species Cntribute t Ecsystem HealthD. Scientists Challenge Wildlife Cnservatin Methds

Every trip t the supermarket invlves a quiet battle between what we want nw and what we knw is better fr us later. That tensin helps explain why many peple end up buying crisps and cakes instead f fruits and vegetables. New research, published in the Jurnal f Public Ecnmics, suggests that this everyday struggle is strngly shaped by hw individuals think abut the future.
The study examined the influence f peple’s time preferences n real-wrld fd decisins, linking financial decisin-making patterns t what ultimately gets purchased and cnsumed. The researchers als tracked actual grcery purchases and eating habits amng lw-incme shppers acrss the US. Participants cmpleted a shrt set f tasks that measured tw features. The first was general patience, meaning hw willing smene is t wait fr larger future rewards. The secnd was present fcus, meaning hw strngly smene is pulled twards immediate satisfactin when a reward is available right nw.
Results shwed that mre patient individuals purchased and ate mre fruits and vegetables. By cntrast, peple wh were mre present fcused shwed the ppsite pattern. They bught and cnsumed fewer fruits and vegetables and had less healthy diets verall. The pull f instant pleasure appeared t be greater than lnger-term health benefits at the mment f chice, particularly in the supermarket shelf area.
The research went further by testing hw these tendencies change when healthy fd becmes cheaper. Sme shppers were given discunts n fruits and vegetables during their nrmal shpping trips. These subsidies (补贴金) greatly increased healthy purchases acrss the bard.
Crucially, the biggest imprvements were seen amng the mst present fcused shppers. The same grup that usually struggled t chse healthier chices respnded mst strngly when the immediate cst was reduced. Lwer prices helped ffset (抵消) their tendency t favr shrt-term rewards, making healthier chices easier in the mment.
This matters fr public health plicy. Gvernments ften assume that peple simply need mre infrmatin abut nutritin. But fr many husehlds, unhealthy eating is nt abut ignrance, but abut hw the brain weighs nw and future under pressure. Plicies that acknwledge this reality, such as lwering the cst f fruit and vegetables, can be mre effective than health advice in the lng run.
32. What did the new research mainly explre?
A. Causes f rising fd prices.B. Ppularity f unhealthy snacks.
C. Shpping cncerns f lw-incme families.D. The link between time preference and fd chice.
33. What plays a key rle in purchasing fr mre present fcused cnsumers?
A. The frequency f shpping.B. The draw f shrt-term reward.
C. The value f nutritius prducts.D. The length f shpping time.
34. What can be inferred frm the further test?
A. Bth grups respnded equally.B. Subsidies are irrelevant t chices.
C. Present fcused shppers benefited mst.D. Patient individuals made a purchase faster.
35. What plicy insight des the study ffer fr imprving public health?
A. Price cuts may be an effective slutin.B. Fd security is the tp pririty.
C. Nutritin educatin needs t be sufficient.D. Planning ahead is wrth advcating.

【答案】Building Bridges Thrugh Cultural Exchange
Last term, ur schl welcmed Maria, an exchange student frm Spain. Initially, we were curius but hesitant. During a culture-sharing activity, she explained hw her family meals ften last tw hurs — a time fr bnding rather than just eating. This surprised us, since we usually eat quickly between study sessins.
Thrugh cmmunicating with Maria, I learned that cultural differences aren’t barriers but bridges t deeper understanding.
