When Wilbur and Orville Wright finished their flight at Kitty Hawk, Americans celebrated the brtherly bnd. The brthers had grwn up playing tgether, they had been in the newspaper business tgether, and they had built an airplane tgether. They even said they “thught tgether”. Hwever, when the Wright brthers said they thught tgether, what they really meant was that they argued tgether. “After lng arguments, we ften fund urselves in the psitin f each having been pulled t the ther’s side,” Orville thught back. “I dn’t think they really gt mad,” their mechanic (机械师) remembered, “but they gt awfully ht.”
The skill t get ht withut getting mad is imprtant in life. But it’s ne that few parents teach t their kids. We want t give kids a warm hme, s we stp brthers and sisters frm quarrelling and we have ur wn arguments behind clsed drs. Yet if kids never face disagreement directly, we’ll end up limiting their creativity. As the psychlgist Rbert Albert put it, the creative persn-t-be cmes frm a family that is ne with a “wbble (摇晃)”. Wilbur and Orville Wright came frm a wbbly family. The brthers ften watched their father Miltn Wright fight with schl teachers wh weren’t fnd f his decisin t let his kids miss a half-day f schl frm time t time t learn n their wn.
The Wright brthers were nt alne. The Beatles fught ver instruments. Steven Jbs and Steve Wzniak argued cnstantly while designing the first Apple cmputer. Brainstrming grups get 16 percent mre ideas when the members are encuraged t criticize ne anther. The mst creative ideas in Chinese technlgy cmpanies cme frm teams that have real disagreement early n.
Children need t learn the value f thughtful disagreement. We shuld teach kids that silence is bad manners. It disrespects the value f yur wn view pint and yur wn vice. It’s a sign f respect t care enugh abut smene’s pinin that yu’re willing t challenge it. Gd arguments are wbbly: a team r family might rck back and frth but it never tips ver. If kids dn’t learn t wbble, they never learn t walk; they end up standing still.
