第二部分 阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分) “Srry seems t be the hardest wrd”—that is ne f Eltn Jhns mst ppular sngs. But nt every public figure seems t find it s tugh t say that pwerful five-letter wrd.
In recent days public figures, frm pliticians t stars, have all publicly expressed remrse. But with s much remrse, hw can we tell a frced aplgy frm a heartfelt expressin f remrse?
Specifically, saying srry shuld be a realizatin that smething yu have said r dne has hurt smene and yu want t make amends. “Peple wants the respnse t be persnal t them. They want t feel that they’re being listened t and taken seriusly,” says Martin Stne.
Firstly, it is imprtant t shw that yu understand. It is vital that any grup r a persn making an aplgy understands the fcus—is it srry fr the way it’s acted r is it srry that the cmplainant feels the way they d? Watch ut fr the speed f respnse. The quicker the aplgy cmes, the better it indicates that the persn making it has felt an immediate sense f guilt.
If sincere, the persn making the aplgy will be lking fr clues (线索) t see if he r she is being understd, such as eye cntact and facial expressins. Perfrmed aplgies always have a sense f being “acted ut”, and are ften accmpanied by t many unnatural gestures.
Fr a sincere aplgy, it is als imprtant t avid prmises that can’t be kept. Dn’t say that yu’ll make sure that this will nt happen again if yu re nt cnfident that it wnt. It culd cme back t bite yu. And d remember that the use f “but” can hugely change the tne (语气) f an aplgy. As Stne pints ut, “I’m srry but...” sunds like yu are making excuses and aren’t actually taking any frm f respnsibility.
1、What des the underlined wrd “remrse” prbably mean?
A.Feelings.B.Appereciatin.C.Regret.D.Sympathy.
2、Which f the fllwing indicates it’s a perfrmed aplgy?
A.Swearing it will nt happen again.B.Aviding eye cntact with the listener.
C.Shwing yu understand his /her feelings.D.Paying attentin t the listener’s reactin.
3、What is stressed in the last paragraph?
A.The attitude.B.The tne f vice.
C.The bdy language.D.The chice f language.
4、What is the purpse f the text?
A.T explain what a gd aplgy is.
B.T discuss hw t give a frmal aplgy.
C.T shw why we shuld aplgize in life.
D.T teach us hw t tell if an aplgy is sincere.
22.(8分) Cane tads, als knwn as buf tads, are yet anther invasive (入侵) species that has fund a hspitable hme in warm suthern Flrida. Deliberately intrduced frm Suth and Central America in the 1930s, they were suppsed t cntrl beetles damaging the sugarcane crp— that’s hw they gt the name “cane tads.”
Cane tads can pse a particular danger because the adult nes sht txin ( 毒 素 ) frm their back when attacked. The tiny tads dn’t carry enugh txin t be deadly yet, but big adult nes can easily send a dg int a seizure ( 疾病发作) r even kill it. The txin is “very viscus and wuld stick inside the dg’s muth,” says Steve Jhnsn, a wildlife eclgist at the University f Flrida. Owners shuld try t wipe ut an affected dg’s muth and immediately take it t the vet.
Tilfrd started Tad Busters in 2017. The wman wh lived there had nine cats, which she fed by dumping almst a bag f cat fd every night. Cane tads nrmally eat bugs, but they are happy t eat pet fd, t.
Cane tads have adapted beautifully t the Flrida suburbs, s a lt f Tilfrd’s wrk als invlves getting peple t rethink their suburban backyard. N mre cat fd, fr example. Pet pp (粪便) can als attract insects, which can in turn attract tads. As d lights. And tads lve t breed (繁殖) in attractive pls f water, such as the lake in the affected Palm Beach Garden neighbrhd. Fr “these larger cmmunities that want t build these beautiful pnds and want t have huses n pnds,” Tilfrd said, “this is almst a pest-cntrl service.” The cane tads aren’t ging away, but they can be managed like msquites r rats.
Dealing with tads amunts t an annying thing in Flrida, but they can als create mre dramatic prblems. In Australia—where they were als deliberately intrduced in the 1930s t prtect sugarcane—they are a genuine scurge (灾祸).
The issue is that Australia has n native tad species, s nne f the predatrs (食肉动物) knew hw t avid the txic tads. As the cane tads advanced east t west acrss the cntinent, “they left a wake f dead animals in their paths,” says Sean Ddy, an eclgist at the University f Suth Flrida at St. Petersburg wh has studied cane tads in Australia. Turtles, lizards, and crcdiles just started dying ut, which was gd news fr their prey (受害者). “If yu were a small species that was previusly being eaten, suddenly yu’re n a hneymn,” says Rick Shine, a bilgist at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, wh has als studied the impact f cane tads n Australian wildlife.

D.Keep pet fd away frm backyard.
3、What happened in Australia after cane tads being intrduced?
A.Cane tads destryed sme fd chains.
B.Mst f the predatrs died f tad txin.
C.Cane tads bred at a much slwer pace.
D.Big species learned t avid cane tads.
23.(8分) In the shrt time Steve and Zach had been inside their tent packing their tls, wind-blwn flame had skipped frm the tp f ne tree t anther. The lng dry summer had turned the frest int a tinderbx.
“Let’s g! We can make it back t the river we crssed tday!” Steve kept Brady n the lead and their heads dwn against the fire-wind. But Brady barked a sharp warning. Ahead f them lay a thick curtain f smke acrss the track. They wuld never make it thrugh that. The dg was pulling at his lead trying t draw them away frm the smke, and yet Steve was uneasy. It seemed t him that they were mving away frm the river.
Suddenly, Zach cried. “Zach!” Steve shuted. “Are yu OK? Where are yu?” Then Brady pulled Steve dwn a sharp slpe(坡). At its base, Zach was rubbing his ankle.
As Steve helped his friend t his feet, Brady lifted his head and snuffed(嗅) the smke-laden wind. Next mment, the dg bunded away and disappeared. The bys shuted fr him, but he didn’t cme back. Steve culdn’t blame Brady fr panicking. He himself wanted t run even thugh he didn’t have a clue which way.
Steve and Zach hadn’t gne far when there was a familiar bark, and Brady came bunding, stpped directly in frnt f Steve and hit him with his head, pushing him back tward the slpe they’d just climbed. But Steve didn’t get it. Then Brady grabbed the by’s jeans and started pulling. The message was clear, but Steve hesitated. Of curse he remembered Brady saving his uncle’s life when the dg was much yunger. Was he still sharp enugh t get them thrugh this?
Nearby, a pine went up in a whsh f smke. Brady pulled again, urgently. “OK, big guy,” Steve gritted(咬紧牙关). Brady led them back dwn the slpe and int the trees. Nt far frm them fire was tuching underbrush. Several times the big dg stpped. Often he changed directins. Steve was s tired that he just wanted t rest, but Brady wuldn’t have it. The dg bullied bth bys t g n. Hw lng they’d walked Steve had n idea. He was almst numb when he heard it—the wnderful sund f rushing water!
1、What happened t Steve and Zach at first?
A.They gt injured.B.They lst their dg.
C.They were trapped.D.They became separated.
2、Brady ran away t ______.
A.seek helpB.find a way ut
C.rescue ZachD.escape fr life

A.Uneasy.B.Impatient.
C.Numb.D.Uncertain.
4、The passage basically describes ________.
A.an adventureB.an explratin
C.an escape gameD.a training prgram
24.(8分) Listen carefully t the ftsteps in the family hme, especially if it has wden flrs, and yu can prbably wrk ut wh it is that is walking abut. The features mst cmmnly used t identify peple are faces, vices, finger prints and retinal scans. But their “behaviural bimetrics”, such as the way they walk, are als giveaways.
Researchers have, fr several years, used vide cameras and cmputers t analyse peple’s gaits, and are nw quite gd at it. But translating such knwledge int a practical identificatin system can be tricky----especially if that system is suppsed t be hidden. Cameras are ften visible, are hard t set up, requi5re gd lighting and may have their view blcked by ther peple. S a team led by Krikr Ozanyan f the University f Manchester, in England and Patricia Scully f the Natinal University f Ireland, in Galway have been lking fr a better way t recgnize gait. Their answer: pressure-sensitive mats.
In themselves, such mats are nthing new. They have been part f security systems fr dnkeys’ years. But Dr. Ozanyan And Dr. Scully use a cmplex versin that can recrd the amunt f pressure applied in different places as smene walks acrss it. These measurements frm a pattern unique t the walker. Dr. Ozanyan and Dr. Scully therefre turned, as is nw cmmn fr anything t d with pattern recgnitin, t an Artificial Intelligence system that uses machine learning t recgnize such patterns.
It seems t wrk. In a study published earlier this year the tw researchers tested their system n a database f ftsteps trdden by 127 different peple. They fund that its errr rate in identifying wh was wh was a mere 0.7%. And Dr. Scully says that even withut a database f ftsteps t wrk with the system can determine smene’s sex---wmen and men, with wide and narrw pelvises(骨盆) respectively, walk in different ways,---- and guess, with reasnable accuracy, a subject’s age.
A mat-based gait-recgnitin system has the advantage that it wuld wrk in any lighting cnditins----even pitch-darkness. And thugh it might fail t identify smene if, say, she was wearing stiletts and had been entered int the database while wearing trainers, it wuld be very hard t fl it by imitating the gait f an individual wh was allwed admissin t a particular place.
The latest phase f Dr. Ozanyan’s and Dr. Scully’s prject is a redesign f the mat. The ld mats cntained individual pressure sensrs. The new nes cntain ptical fibres(光纤). Light-emitting dides(二极管) distributed alng tw neighburing edges f a mat transmit light int the fibres. Sensrs n the ppsite edges( and thus the ppsite ends f the ptical fibres) measure hw much f that light is received. Any pressure applied t part f the mat causes a distrtin(变形) in the fibres and a cnsequent change in the amunt f light transmitted. Bth the lcatin and amunt f change can be pltted and analyzed by the machine-learning system.
Dr. Ozanyan says that the team have built a demnstratin fibre-ptic mat, tw meters lng and a metre wide, using materials that cst £100($130). They are nw talking t cmpanies abut cmmercializing it. One applicatin might be in health care, particularly fr the elderly. A fibre-ptic mat installed in a nursing hme r an ld persn’s wn residence culd mnitr changes in an individual’s gait that warn certain illnesses. That wuld prvide early warning f smene being at greater risk f falling ver, say, r f their cgnitin becming damaged.
Gait analysis might als be used ass a security measure in the wrkplace, mnitring access t restricted areas, such as parts f military bases, server farms r labratries dealing with harmful materials. In these cases, emplyees wuld need t agree t their gaits being scanned, just as they wuld agree t the scanning f their faces r retinas fr ptical security systems.
Perhaps the mst fascinating use f gait-recgnitin mats, thugh, wuld be in public places, such as airprts. Fr that t wrk, the ftsteps f thse t be recgnized wuld need t have been stred in a database, which wuld be harder t arrange than the cllectin f mugshts and fingerprints that existing airprt security systems rely n. Sme peple, hwever, might vlunteer fr it. Many aircrew r pre-registered frequent flyers wuld welcme anything that speeded up ne f the mst tiresme parts f mdern travel.
1、Camera-based gait recgnitin fails t cme int wide use, because _____.
a. it’s nt easy t find the cameras
b. finger print recgnitin is still ppular
c. smetimes the cameras can be cvered
d. it’s a waste f mney t fix the equipment

B.The new mats will be likely t wrk better with enugh pressure.
C.The elderly are cured f their diseases with the mnitr f the fibre-ptic.
D.Restricted areas are accessible t thse with their gaits scanned befrehand.

A.The mat-based gait-recgnitin systemB.The gait stred in the database
C.The advantage f wrking in any light cnditin.D.The admissin t a particular place.
4、What’s the best title f the passage?
A.Listen t yur ftstepsB.Applaud pattern recgnitin
C.Lve the way yu walkD.Better the mats yu step n
25.(10分)Zulema Munz cllects seaweed in a small castal twn 100 miles suth f Santiag, Chile. A gd week may see her cut 1,100 punds f seaweed frm the rcks where it grws.
Muftz is ne f the 30, 000 peple fr whm Chilean seaweed industry prvides a livelihd. Thrughut Latin America, the cultivatin (种植) and cllectin f seaweed are gaining a supprt bth as a surce f fd and as a means f ensuring fd security in a regin where 34 millin peple are fd insecure and pverty affects 47 percent f the rural ppulatin. Cuntries such as Argentina, Brazil, Clmbia, Cuba, Ecuadr, Mexic, Peru, and Venezuela have all explred seaweed prductin fr fd. Yet as demand utpaces prductin and wild stcks have declined, mre attentin is being paid t sustainable cultivatin and harvesting methds that can keep the industry surviving.
Seaweed has a lng histry in Suth American style f cking. The native cking f Chile made frequent use f cchayuy, the mst abundant f the cuntry 750 types f seaweed. Tday, cchayuy is cmmnly fund in place f meat incharquican, a traditinal dish cked slwly in a clsed pan.
Kelp, a type f large brwn seaweed, as the new vegetable is a glbal trend t, and fr gd reasn. Nutritinally, seaweed is packed with idine and ther nutrients, and appears n trend-making menus in Ggle's New Yrk cafeteria, thugh it used t be thught difficult t get peple t eat it.
While 83 percent f cultivated sea vegetables are prduced fr human cnsumptin, we aren’t just eating it. Seaweed is used in fertilizers and animal feed, and seaweed-based fd additives are likely in many prducts in yur kitchen and bathrm right nw. Carrageenan, made frm red seaweed, is in everything frm shamp and tthpaste t ice cream and sme ht dgs.
While seaweed grws readily—there are cncerns that humans are taking t much f the wild stuff. It is pssible that verexplitatin f natural seaweed resurces culd lead t significant eclgical, ecnmic, and scial cnsequences at lcal, reginal, and even glbal scales. In Latin American cuntries like Brazil and Peru, where the seaweed industry is based n harvesting wild seaweed rather than cultivated, the need fr envirnmentally friendly mdels is urgent.
1、What d yu knw abut seaweed?
A.It is hard t grw. B.It is gd t health.
C.It tastes delicius. D.It csts a great deal.
2、What can we learn frm the passage?
A.Hw peple cllect weed. B.What peple d with seaweed.
C.Hw peple ck with seaweed. D.Where peple trade seaweed.
3、Why is seaweed cultivated accrding t the passage?
A.T make the best f the seas and t increase the exprt f seaweed.
B.T help mre peple ut f pverty and t pen up its new markets.
C.T meet the needs f the market and t preserve the wild resurces.
D.T cut the csts f seaweed industry and t benefit rural ppulatin.
