Scientists have lng knwn that herbivres (食草动物) affect the plant diversity arund them. In highly prductive ecsystems, like jungles, animals wuld favr dminant, fast-grwing plants. This wuld free up nutrients and space, allwing fr a greater variety f plants t bm. In cntrast, herbivres in regins with lw plant bimass, like deserts, wuld eat whatever they culd find, nly driving dwn plant diversity.
Nw, a team f scientists has tested this hypthesis(假说). Burkepile, a bilgy prfessr in UC Santa Barbara, and his clleagues reviewed 252 studies cmparing plant diversity in areas where herbivres were and were nt excluded.
Their study revealed that whether herbivres increase r decrease plant diversity depends n what’s n the menu. In general, the crrelatin (相关性) between herbivry and diversity wasn’t nearly as clear as everyne had expected. Hwever, the team nticed a much strnger assciatin: when the ecsystem hsted a particularly vigrus species f plant, herbivry seemed t be crucial in maintaining bidiversity.
Fr instance, grasslands in the tallgrass prairie in the American Midwest tend t be dminated (控制) by fast-grwing grasses, such as big bluestem. The team discvered that herbivres had an utsized effect n maintaining bidiversity by keeping big bluestem frm taking ver dzens f smaller, slwer grwing plant species. Hwever nt all herbivres are n an equal ft. The team fund that the cnnectin between herbivry and diversity was particularly strng in grasslands where mre animals feed n grass than n herbs and bushes. This seems reasnable, since grasses tend t be the dminant species in grasslands, as the name suggests.
These findings are mre than academic. “We’ve seen three decades f really imprtant papers saying that ecsystems wrk better when yu have mre species in them,” Burkepile said. “What ur data suggests is that herbivres are especially imprtant fr maintaining this bidiversity in places where yu have a really dminant plant species.” As bidiversity cntinues t decline wrldwide, cnservatinists are lking fr ways t prevent catastrphic lsses. “This suggests that ne pssible apprach t managing ecsystems and bidiversity is t use herbivres t manage these dminant species,” Burkepile added.
1、Accrding t Paragraph 1, hw d herbivres help t increase bidiversity?
A.By cnsuming dminant, fast-grwing plants.
B.By destrying jungles and freeing up space.
C.By adding mre nutrients t the sil.

B.herbivres decrease bidiversity in tallgrass-dminated ecsystems
C.small animals help t prtect bidiversity in grasslands withut bushes
D.the degree t which herbivres affect bidiversity is related t plant species
3、What is the authr trying t tell us in the last paragraph?
A.The limitatins f the new study.
B.The ptential applicatin f the new study.
C.The cntradictin between the past view and the new findings.
