She suggested that higher educatin may encurage lifelng interest in cgnitive effrts, while thse with less educatin may nt engage as frequently in mental exercises that help keep the memry agile (敏捷地).
But educatin early in adulthd des nt appear t be the nly rute t maintain yur memry. The study fund that intellectual activities undertaken regularly made a difference. “Amng individuals with lw educatin, thse wh are engaged in reading, writing, attending lectures, ding wrd games r puzzles nce a week r mre had memry scres similar t peple with mre educatin,” said Lachman.
The study, called Midlife in the United States, assessed 3,343 men and wmen between the ages f 32 and 84 with a mean age f 56 years. The researchers evaluated hw the participants perfrmed in tw cgnitive areas, verbal memry and executive functin --- brain prcesses invlved in planning, abstract thinking and cgnitive flexibility. Participants were given a battery f tests, including tests f verbal fluency, wrd recall, and backward cunting.
As expected, thse with higher educatin said they engaged in cgnitive activities mre ften and als did better n the memry tests, but sme with lwer educatin als did well, explained Lachman.
“The findings are prmising because they suggest there may be ways t level the playing field fr thse with lwer educatinal achievement, and prtect thse at greatest risk fr memry declines,” said Lachman. “Althugh we can nt rule ut the pssibility that thse wh have better memries are the nes wh take n mre activities, the evidence is cnsistent with cgnitive plasticity (可塑性), and suggests sme degree f persnal cntrl ver cgnitive functining in adulthd by adpting an intellectually active lifestyle.”
