Ullman, Hamrick and the rest f the team lked at data frm 16 ther studies n language. They fund that peple learn language using tw memry systems: declarative and prcedural. Memrizing vcabulary, fr example, is a declarative memry prcess. But learning grammar is, mstly, a prcedural memry prcess.
"Declarative memry, in humans at least, is what we think f as learning memry', such as, 'Oh, remember what yu said last night' r things like that. And prcedural mtr memry is what we ften call mtr memry' such as hw yu learn t ride a bicycle." Or, Ullman adds, "These prcedural memry skills becme s deeply leaned that we are n lnger aware that we are ding them."
Hwever, Ullman explains that the tw lng-term memry systems can share tasks. And, he ads, the adult brain uses the systems t learn language a bit differently than a child's brain.
"Adult language learners f a secnd language may use their declarative memry fr using grammar patterns. They think abut it purpsefully. Fr a child, the grammar may cme mre naturally. They dn't have t think abut the grammar rules befre speaking."

But accrding t a chart made recently by website Grammar Check, these are far frm being the nly differences between the tw cuntries’ use f English. The chart utlined 63 f the main cntrasts between BrE and AmE, frm the mre well-knwn “lift/elevatr” and “autumn/fall” t the lesser-knwn “garden/yard” and “petrl/gasline”.
Sme f the vcabulary mismatches are s different that tw peple in a cnversatin may fail t understand each ther. Fr example, the tw cuntries have different names fr certain fd. “ Biscuits “ and “sweets” in Britain are knwn as “ckies” and “candy” , respectively, in the US.
