21.(6分)Yu can’t walk int the ffice withut Rihanna’s vice singing “wrk wrk wrk wrk wrk wrk” in yur head. And that ne line frm Lady Gaga’s “Bad Rmance” still makes yu want t scream. These are cmmnly knwn as earwrm sngs—thse sticky tunes that cntinue t play in yur head. A recent study finds that mre than 90% f adults reprt hearing earwrm sngs n a weekly basis.
Frtunately, mst peple reprt earwrm sngs as pleasant. But thers find them annying r even maddening. “Sme peple are trubled by them t the pint that it disturbs life,” says Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis, a prfessr at the University f Arkansas wh has studied earwrm sngs.
Margulis says earwrm sngs tend t have sme predictable characteristics. Fr ne thing, they tend t small parts f a sng—nt the whle track. And “the sngs yu’ve heard recently als have the mst pssibility t get stuck in yur memry,” she says.
But smetimes smething strange and unpredictable can als start a track paying in yur head. “Once I was at the dctr’s ffice and saw a pster f a man wh I thught lked like Gastn—a character frm Beauty and the Beast,” Margulis recalls. A cuple minutes passed, and she realized she culdn’t get “Be Our Guest”, the sng in the mvie, ut f her head, even thugh she hadn’t thught f the tune in years. In that instance, she was able t identify her earwrm’s trigger: the Gastn-lking man in the pster. “But the cnnectins can be really unclear,” she says.
Margulis pints ut that, in all f human histry, recrded music is a very new phenmenn. She says sme have inferred that earwrm sngs are als new—the unintended cnsequence f being able t hear the same sng played everywhere in the same way ver and ver again. S far, the cnvincing explanatin fr why human beings experience earwrm sngs remains a mystery. But there are sme well-established ways t cast ff the earwrm sngs.
“Finding a mentally demanding task and putting yur mind n it usually shifts attentin away frm internal music. Peple tend t get earwrms when perfrming tasks that dn’t require their full attentin—stuff like ding the dishes,” Margulis says.
Chewing gum can als help. When a sng is stuck in ur heads, it’s almst like we’re singing alng with it. If yu make yur muth d smething else—chewing gum, eating a meal r talking with a friend—that can kick ut the earwrm.
Yu culd als face yur enemy. By listening t the full track that includes the passage stuck in yur head, yu may find “clsure” and relief.

C.When we hear earwrm sngs. D.Hw t get ver earwrm sngs.
22.(8分) While staring ut f the windw during a flight, nt everyne will think carefully abut the questin why airplanes have runded windws rather than square nes.
Over the years, aerspace engineering has made huge steps in airplane technlgy, meaning planes can carry mre passengers and g faster. The planes have als changed shape t increase safety—including the windws. As cmmercial air travel tk ff in the mid-20th century, airline cmpanies began t fly at higher altitudes t lwer their cst—the air density(密度) is lwer up there, creating less drag(阻力)fr airplanes. Hwever, higher altitudes came with prblems, like the fact human beings can’t really survive at 30,000 feet. T make that pssible, the cabin was changed t a cylindrical(圆柱体) shape t supprt the pressure inside. But at first, plane builders left in the standard square windws and this expansin meant disaster. The de__Havilland__Cmet came int fashin in the 1950s. With a clsed cabin, it was able t g higher and faster than ther aircraft.
Hwever, where there’s a crner, there’s a weak spt. Windws, having fur crners, have fur ptential weak spts, making them likely t crash under stress—such as air pressure. By curving the windw, the stress that wuld eventually break the windw crner is distributed and the chance f it breaking is reduced. Runded shapes are als strnger and resist defrmatin(变形), and can thus survive the extreme differences in pressure between the inside and utside f the aircraft.
Frtunately, designers figured ut the lack f design pretty quick. Nw we have nice, runded airplane windws that can resist the pressure f traveling altitude. It gives being able t gaze ut f yur windw t the wrld frm 35,000 feet a whle new utlk, desn’t it?
1、Why did airlines aim t fly at higher altitudes?
A.T increase safety f the plane.
B.T help the plane t take ff.
C.T save mney fr less drag.
D.T carry mre passengers and g faster.
2、What des the underlined wrds “de Havilland Cmet” in Paragraph 2 refer t?
      A.A planet.B.A band.C.An aircraft.D.A design.
3、Which is the advantage f the runded windw?
A.It reduces the pssibility f breaking up.
B.It weakens the strength f air pressure.
      C.It increases the air pressure.
D.It helps t survive the extreme weather.
4、Where des this text cme frm?
      A.A newspaper n safe driving.B.A magazine n fashin design.
      C.A website n survival skills.D.A science bk n flying.
23.(8分) British children used t play cnkers (板栗游戏) in the autumn when the hrse-chestnut trees started t drp their shiny brwn nuts. They wuld select a suitable chestnut, drill a hle in it and thread it nt a string, then swing their cnker at that f an ppnent until ne f them brke. But the game has fallen ut f favur. Children spend less time utdrs and rarely have access t chestnut trees. Besides, many schls have banned cnkers games, wrried that they might cause injuries r nut allergies.
That srt f risk-averseness(规避风险) nw spreads thrugh every aspect f childhd. Playgrunds have all the excitement designed ut f them t make them safe. Many gvernments, particularly in scieties such as America, have tightened up their rules, requiring parents t supervise(监管) yung children far mre clsely than in the past. Frank Furedi f the University f Kent, a critic n mdern parenting, argues that allwing children t play unsupervised r leaving them at hme alne is increasingly described as a symptm f irrespnsible parenting.
In part, such increased cautin is a respnse t the huge wave f changes. Large-scale urbanizatin, smaller and mre mbile families, the mve f wmen int the labr market and the digitizatin f many aspects f life have unavidably changed the way that peple bring up their children. There is little chance that any f these trends will be changed, s tday's mre intensive(精细化的) parenting style is likely t g n.
Such parenting practices nw embraced by wealthy parents in many parts f the rich wrld, particularly in America, g far beynd an adjustment t changes in external cnditins. They mean a strng bid t ensure that the advantages enjyed by the parents’ generatin are passed n t their children. Since success in life nw turns mainly n educatin, such parents will d their best t prvide their children with the schling, the character training and the scial skills that will secure access t the best universities and later the mst attractive jbs.
T sme extent that has always been the case. But there are mre such parents nw, and they are cmpeting with each ther fr what ecnmists call psitinal gds. This cmpetitin starts even befre the children are brn. The wealthy classes will take their time t select a suitable spuse and get married, and will start a family nly when they feel ready fr it.
Children frm less advantaged backgrunds, by cntrast, ften appear befre their parents are ready fr them. In America 60% f births t single wmen under 30 are unplanned, and ver 40% f children are brn utside marriage. The result, certainly in America, has been t widen already massive scial inequalities yet further.
All the evidence suggests that children frm prer backgrunds are at a disadvantage almst as sn as they are brn. By the age f five r six they are far less “schl-ready” than their better-ff peers, s any attempts t help them catch up have t start lng befre they get t schl. America has had sme success with varius schemes invlving regular hme visits by nurses r scial wrkers t lw-incme families with new babies. It als has lng experience with prgrammes fr yung children frm pr families that cmbine supprt fr parents with gd-quality child care. Such prgrammes d seem t make a difference. Withut extra effrt, children frm lw-incme families in mst cuntries are much less likely than their better-ff peers t attend preschl educatin, even thugh they are mre likely t benefit frm it. And data frm the OECD’s PISA prgramme suggest that children need at least tw years f preschl educatin t perfrm at their best when they are 15.
S the mst prmising way t ensure greater equality may be t make early-years educatin and care fr mre widely available and mre affrdable, as it is in the Nrdics. Sme gvernments are already rethinking their educatinal pririties, shifting sme f their spending t the early years.
Mst rich cuntries decided mre than a century ag that free, cmpulsry educatin fr all children was a wrthwhile investment fr sciety. There is nw an argument fr starting preschl educatin earlier, as sme cuntries have already dne. In the face f crushing new inequalities, a mdern versin f that apprach is wrth trying.
1、What can we learn frm the first tw paragraphs?
      A.Mre attentin is placed n children’s safety.

D.Children frm lw-incme families are ensured t receive early educatin.
5、What’s the authr’s attitude twards investment in pre-schl educatin?
      A.SupprtiveB.Disapprving
      C.SkepticD.Uncncerned

      A.shw cmpetitin verweighs cperatin
B.imply educatinal inequalities shuld be brken
C.make readers aware f the rules f the game

24.(8分) A research has shwn that nearly 90 percent f traffic accidents are caused by human errrs. S ur aim is a fully autnmus (自动的) car that gets rid f the cause f mst accidents: the driver. Researcher Hdgsn pints ut, “Fr safety, the faster yu can remve humans, the better, even if there are unfrtunately a few accidents frm new causes. It’s a questin f balancing the number injured r killed by autnmus vehicles with the peple whse lives are ptentially saved.”
It’s an idea that Eln Musk, chief executive f electric car cmpany Tesla Mtrs, has lng believed. His cmpany is determined t be the first t deliver a fully autnmus vehicle t cnsumers. Last year, Musk annunced that Tesla’s 2019 gal was “t d an example drive f full autnmy all the way frm L. A.t New Yrk, and have the car park itself.
Hwever, even Tesla admits that there are prblems t vercme—the sftware needs further validatin (批准生效) and the apprpriate regulatry apprval needs t be in place. Indeed, recent crashes f Tesla vehicles and Ggle cars cnfirm that the sftware isn’t ready yet.
The UK gvernment appears cmmitted encuraging the develpment f autnmus vehicles. It’s supprting fur city trials, publishing the Mdern Transprt Bill t reduce red tape arund their intrductin and adapting the legal system t take int accunt prblems such as insurance liability when a human isn’t in cntrl f a vehicle.
The insurance industry is similarly eager t help increase autnmy in cars. As the Assciatin f British Insurers pints ut, “Nearly 90 percent f rad accidents are caused by human errrs.” This csts mtr insurers a shcking $20 millin per day in claims.

C.intrduce a new develpment in technlgy
D.prvide a persuasive argument against autnmy
25.(10分)When we think f a generatin gap we usually think f cnflicting tastes in music, r pastimes. But nw the generatin gap is handwriting. After ne teacher in Tennessee discvered that she had students wh culdn’t read the assignments she was writing n the bard, she psted it n the Internet saying handwriting shuld be taught in schls.
Oppnents claim that handwriting has becme ut f time in ur mdern wrld. Typed wrds have becme a primary frm f cmmunicatin. Once a practical kill handwriting is n lnger used by the vast majrity f Americans. It is n lnger taught in schls, and sme claim that the time that it wuld take t teach it culd be put t better use, fr instance, by teaching the technical skills.
But even in tday’s wrld there are still plenty f reasns t pick up a pen and apply it t paper. Many American institutins still require riginal signatures, fr instance, signing fr a registered letter and buying a huse. And riginal signatures are much mre difficult t frge(伪造) than their digital cunterparts. There is als strng evidence that writing by hand is gd fr the mind. It activates a different part f the brain, and imprves fine mving skills in yung children. Peple als tend t remember what they write by hand mre than what they type, and the prcess f writing by hand has been shwn t stimulate ideas. Besides, studies have shwn that kids wh write by hand learn t read and spell earlier than thse wh dn’t. Nt t mentin, handwriting is pleasing, as is evidenced by the fact that n ne has ever typed a lve letter. And handwriting remains ppular as an art frm.
Yes, we live in a mdern wrld, but we live in a mdern wrld that is based n fundamental values.
1、What did the teacher find in her class?
A.Her students had a big generatin gap with her.

C.Handwriting can help ne buy a huse.
D.Handwriting is an art frm ut f time.
3、What can we infer frm the passage?
