Since 2019, ur institute, the Institute f Bilgy and Chemistry f Prteins in Lyn, has reduced its carbn ftprint by abut 13% thrugh changes in lab practices. Fr me, hwever, this transfrmatin started with a sense f discmfrt rather than with numbers.
At the time, I was an early-career researcher fcusing n publicatins and prductivity. S when abut a dzen vlunteer scientists began raising cncerns abut the envirnmental impact f ur wrk, I hesitated. Any measure that might affect prductivity seemed risky. I wrried that raising freezer temperatures culd damage samples, that reducing cleaning cycles might slw experiments, and that changing lng-standing prcedures culd hurt my publicatin recrd.
One questin in particular changed the way I think. Audrey Sabbagh, an assciate prfessr at Paris City University, nce asked, “Can we cnsider research that is nt ethical frm an envirnmental pint f view t be excellent?” That questin stayed with me. I realized that I had lng separated excellence frm respnsibility.
My clleagues and I then jined the Labs 1.5 prgram, a cllective f arund 600 researchers wh believe science shuld lead by example in reducing sciety’s carbn ftprint. The cllective has develped a free nline tl that any researcher can use t cmpute their lab’s carbn ftprint. The results shwed that mre than half f the emissins (排放) in labratries like urs came frm the prductin, transprt, and technical services linked t lab supplies and equipment.
