Once yu’re stuffed frm a big meal, mst fds lse their appeal. But see a sweet treat and yu might be ready t make rm fr mre. Bilgy may explain this feeling, a new study led by neurscientist Marielle Minere suggests.
Minere first gt curius abut sugar cravings (渴望) while wrking with mice in an experiment. “When full, the mice wuldn’t eat nrmal fd but wuld eat sugar. That really made us want t knw what drives sugar cravings,” she recalls. S Minere’s team thught ut a way t explre which parts f the brain might explain this.
They put special prteins int a few parts f the mice’s brains. These prteins light up when brain cells are active. The researchers fcused n a grup f brain cells called the POMC. These cells are knwn t make mice — and peple — feel full. The team wndered if the same cells might help drive sugar cravings.
When an animal eats, the POMC cells send messages t ther grups f brain cells that give a sense f feeling full. That feeling tells the animal t stp eating. When the mice were ffered sugar, thugh, a different pathway ut f the POMC lit up. “We fund that the POMC cells are als quickly turned n when mice see signs f sugar,” says Minere.
This pathway, she believes, acts as a sugar-craving circuit. It can verpwer the fullness circuit. The sugar-craving circuit engages a part f the brain that signals rewards and pleasure. This, the researchers think, is what makes sweets s appealing.
T test if peple have the same sugar-craving brain circuit, Minere’s team designed anther experiment. Vlunteers agreed t lie in a brain scanner (扫描仪). It recrded brain activity as peple were given water r sugar. When they gt sugar, cells in their sugar-craving circuit lit up. This shwed that the sugar-craving circuit exists in bth mice and us.
Minere believes there’s a reasn why ur brains crave sugar. Our ancient ancestrs lived in a time when it was tugher t find fd, she says. And sweet fds prvide quick energy.
S, Minere says, it’s nt yur fault if yu can’t resist a sweet treat. Blame bilgy.
      12. What inspired Minere t study sugar cravings?
      A. What is the way t help peple lse weight.B. What stps mice frm feeling full.
      C. Why peple avid fds after a big meal.D. Why mice still eat sugar when full.
      13. What is the finding f Minere’s team abut the POMC cells?
      A. They can be activated by the sight f sugar.B. They can drive mice t lk fr sugar.
      C. They can make the brain signal pleasure.D. They can change ther types f brain cells.
      14. Why d human brains crave sugar accrding t the study?
      A. Because sweet fds are mre delicius than ther fds.
      B. Because ancient humans needed quick energy frm sugar.
      C. Because mdern peple have mre sugar t eat.
      D. Because POMC cells stp wrking in mdern humans.
