Once yu’re stuffed frm a big meal, mst fds lse their appeal. But see a sweet treat and yu might be
ready t make rm fr mre. Bilgy may explain this feeling, a new study led by neurscientist Marielle Minere
suggests.
Minere first gt curius abut sugar cravings (渴望) while wrking with mice in an experiment. “When full,
the mice wuldn’t eat nrmal fd but wuld eat sugar. That really made us want t knw what drives sugar
cravings,” she recalls. S Minere’s team thught ut a way t explre which parts f the brain might explain this.
They put special prteins int a few parts f the mice’s brains. These prteins light up when brain cells are
active. The researchers fcused n a grup f brain cells called the POMC. These cells are knwn t make mice—
and peple—feel full. The team wndered if the same cells might help drive sugar cravings.
When an animal eats, the POMC cells send messages t ther grups f brain cells that give a sense f feeling
()股份
full. That feeling tells the animal t stp eating. When the mice were ffered sugar, thugh, a different pathway ut
f the POMC lit up. “We fund that the POMC cells are als quickly turned n when mice see signs f sugar,” says
Minere.
This pathway, she believes, acts as a sugar-craving circuit. It can verpwer the fullness circuit. The
sugar-craving circuit engages a part f the brain that signals rewards and pleasure. This, the researchers think, is
what makes sweets s appealing.
T test if peple have the same sugar-craving brain circuit, Minere’s team designed anther experiment.
Vlunteers agreed t lie in a brain scanner (扫描仪). It recrded brain activity as peple were given water r sugar.
When they gt sugar, cells in their sugar-craving circuit lit up. This shwed that the sugar-craving circuit exists in
bth mice and us.
Minere believes there’s a reasn why ur brains crave sugar. Our ancient ancestrs lived in a time when it was
tugher t find fd, she says. And sweet fds prvide quick energy.
S, Minere says, it’s nt yur fault if yu can’t resist a sweet treat. Blame bilgy.
32. What inspired Minere t study sugar cravings?
A. What is the way t help peple lse weight. B. What stps mice frm feeling full.
C. Why peple avid fds after a big meal. D. Why mice still eat sugar when full.
33. What is the finding f Minere’s team abut the POMC cells?
A. They can be activated by the sight f sugar. B. They can drive mice t lk fr sugar.
C. They can make the brain signal pleasure. D. They can change ther types f brain cells.
34. Why d human brains crave sugar accrding t the study? A. Because sweet fds are mre delicius than ther fds. B. Because ancient humans needed quick energy frm sugar.
C. Because mdern peple have mre sugar t eat.
D. Because POMC cells stp wrking in mdern humans.
35. What is Minere’s attitude twards peple’s sugar cravings?
A. Critical. B. Understanding. C. Dubtful. D. Subjective.

Later that day, ver a cup f cffee, Wanda said smething that tk Ruby by surprise. “Yu knw, Ruby,”
Wanda said gently, “I brught yu here nt t fllw my path, but t see yur wn. Watching yu at the square, I
realized this campus needs yur unique energy. That sweater I gave yu is a gift f welcme, nt a template t
cnfrm t.” Ruby felt a warmth spread thrugh her. She finally understd her jurney wasn’t abut becming a
secnd Wanda, but abut writing her wn stry alngside her cusin.

M: We shuld bring in sme new peple.
W: Well, I think we need t replace sme ld cmputers arund here first.
M: That’s true. Hpefully, we can affrd t hi re smene after buying the new equipment.
(Text 2)
M: Grace, has that shipment f lab equipment arrived? It was suppsed t arrive this afternn.
W: The supplier called this mrning and said there was a delay. Didn’t yu get my email abut it?
M: I must have missed it.
(Text 3)
M: I thught the film was really exciting as it has lts f actin.
W: Well, I almst fell asleep when I watched it. I’d prefer sme rmance, nt just car chases and fights.
(Text 4)
W: What makes yu different frm ther peple?
M: Mmm... sme peple say I’m gd at drawing, but I hardly ever practice. What abut yu?
W: I’m quite an inventr. I have ideas fr new things and then try t make them wrk.
(Text 5)
W: S hw did yu and Jennifer meet, Ben? I heard yu met at a dancing club.

(Text 6)

W: Hmm. Hardly ideal when yu’re ut fr a meal. S hw was the fd?
M: Nt bad at all. And there’s smething fr everyne, whether yu’re a fish persn, a meat lver, r a vegetarian.
They have lvely staff t, really enthusiastic.
W: Maybe I’ll give it a try next weekend. It’s my sister’s birthday then. (7)
(Text 7)
W: Prfessr Tmlinsn, may I ask yu a few questins abut the reflective jurnal?
M: Yes, f curse. What are yu having truble with?
W: Well, everything really. T start with, what shuld be included first in the jurnal? (8) Perhaps suggestins frm
thers?
M: N, n. Yu shuld include the study gals yu set yurself at the beginning f yur jurnal. This sectin
shuld have been discussed in sme detail twards the beginning f the curse by Prfessr May. Yu shuld be
able t find her suggestins n the slides she has prvided t the class nline. (9)
W: Okay, thank yu, Prfessr.
(Text 8)
M: Hell there. I was asked t tell yu abut the extent f the damage t the main building, caused by the recent
strm.
W: Oh, that’s right. I take it that mst f the damage is just t the main building. (10)
M: It is indeed. Hwever, luckily, the damage is minr, and all f it can be fixed in ne day.
W: What will yu be ding first? I understand yu start at 8 in the mrning.
M: That’s right. We were ging t remve the fallen trees, but we’ve been tld there are exams in the mrning, and
I’m sure the sund will disturb all the students, (12) s instead we’ll fix that leaky rf first, (11) That’s a fur-hur
jb since it invlves cnsiderable repair, nt like fixing brken windws, which can be dne quite quickly.
W: S yu’ll fix the brken windws after that, frm midday?
M: That’s right.
(Text 9)
M: Gd mrning, Madam. My name is Bb Smith. I’m ding a survey f peple’s shpping preferences. (13)
Culd yu spare a few minutes?
W: Sure, but wh are yu ding this fr? I dn’t want t g ut giving infrmatin that will help thse big
cmpanies sell mre junk fd t children.
M: Dn’t wrry. It’s the ppsite. I wrk fr the Green Market Research cmpany. We help ec-friendly
cmpanies tell cnsumers why they shuld buy their prducts. (14)
W: S, what kind f questins are yu asking?
M: Well, d yu like t buy rganic fd and lk fr prducts with simple packaging?
W: I d try t buy rganic whenever I can, and I definitely avid prducts with ver-packaging even if they’re
bright and luxurius. (15) It’s just s wasteful.
M: Great! D yu think the price difference affects yur decisin? Smetimes ec-friendly prducts can be mre
expensive.
W: Yes, it des. But I’m willing t supprt sustainable practices. I think it’s necessary in the lng run. (16)

(Text 10)
M: Thank yu fr inviting me. I remember I wanted t becme a painter in cllege, s I wrked hard t get my
degree in Fine Arts. (17) Hwever, when I left cllege, I started drawing pictures fr bks. (18) I was n lnger prducing images frm the heart but develping images fr mney. Then I began t develp a cllectin f my drawings and started t carry them arund with me t shw ptential clients and emplyers. Having a wnderful cllectin f riginal artwrk is the first step, but mst ptential clients wuld like t see printed artwrk as evidence f quality. (19) and withut this “evidence”, they will be hesitant abut ffering a cntract. Well, here are
my suggestins fr yu t prepare yur cllectins f yur best artwrk. The first way is by submitting yur
artwrk fr a cmpetitin. (20) Cmpetitins ffer yu an pprtunity t shw yur artwrk. The ther apprach is
t place sme f yur drawings next t sme text t demnstrate hw yur artwrk wuld lk when it is printed.
Nevertheless, when yu’re ging fr an interview, it’s imprtant t separate yur artwrk int different types. That’
s all frm me. Thank yu fr listening
