frm a Vietnamese refugee family, shwcasing my strength seemed the best way t hnr my parents’ and siblings’ sacrifices that have given me a better life in the
United States. I did nt want clleagues t questin my capabilities r friends and family t see me as anything less than unshakable.
The truth was, I desired t pause, t catch my breath, t simply say, “I’m
struggling.” I lnged t be weak. I wanted t acknwledge my mistakes, t hnr a
range f emtins, and t ask fr help. Cautiusly, I began t reveal sme f my
struggles t my persnal and prfessinal circles, watching clsely fr reactins.

judgment and respected my bundaries and cping prcess. They ffered infrmatin abut cunseling services, legal help, supprt grups, and htlines. They helped me see that even prfessinals in leadership psitins can need supprt.

Tday, petry and science are ften cnsidered t be mutually exclusive (互相排斥) career paths. But that wasn’t always the case. The mathematician Ada Lvelace and the physicist James Clerk Maxwell were bth accmplished pets. The pet Jhn Keats was a licensed surgen. Cmbining the tw practices fell ut f favr in the
1800s. But translating research int lyrics, haiku, and ther petic frms is resurging (再现) amng scientists as they lk fr alternative ways t inspire thers with their findings.
“Petry is a great tl fr questining the wrld,” says Sam Illingwrth, a pet and gescientist wh wrks at the University f Western Australia. Thrugh
wrkshps and a new science-petry jurnal, called Cnsilience, Illingwrth is helping scientists t translate their latest results int pems that can attract
appreciatin frm thse utside f their immediate scientific field.
Stephany Mazn, a scientist frm the University f Helsinki in Finland, jined
ne fIllingwrth’s wrkshps. In the wrkshp, she was gruped with ther
scientists and tasked with writing a haiku, a 17-syllable-lng pem, which sptlighted water, a fluid that featured in all f the grup members’ research prjects. “It was a lt f fun, and surprisingly easy t write the pem,” Mazn says. She plans t cntinue
writing. “We d a disservice t urselves t think that scientists can’t be artistic and that art can’t be used t cmmunicate scientific ideas,” Mazn says.
That viewpint is eched by Illingwrth, wh thinks science cmmunicatin
initiatives are t ften dminated by public lectures with their hands-ff PwerPint
slides. “Actually, when science cmmunicatin invlves writing and sharing pems, it invites a tw-way dialgue between experts and nnexperts,” he says. Scientist-pet
Manjula Silva, an educatr at Imperial Cllege Lndn, agrees. Petry prvides a way t translate cmplex scientific cncepts int a language that everyne can understand, Silva says.
Scientists and pets are bth trying t understand the wrld and cmmunicate that understanding with thers. The distinctin between scientists and pets is less
than peple might think. We’re all just peple with hpefully really interesting things t say and t share.

The wrld has changed greatly since Herman Fisher met Irving Price and Helen
Schelle in 1930. The tri (三人组) funded Fisher-Price, maker f ppular ty series such as Thmas & Friends, Pwer Wheels, and Little Peple. Cmpanies like

One thught f the vide explres hw parenting will change when the teens f tday raised with data-prviding devices such as Fitbit and iPad begin raising kids f their wn. Is this a generatin that will desire data in all ftheir kids’ tys? The

If yu interpret the vide as a clear visin f the future f parenting, yu wn’t be blamed fr fearing hlgrams (全息图) will take ver yur huse as a mm r dad. playing with the traditinal ty.
Of curse, yu might ask yurself, “D data-prviding tys have an advantage ver traditinal tys in terms f their effects?” The answer may be negative. Leg, a traditinal brick ty-maker, n all cunts remains a successful cmpany. And studies pint ut its tys’ benefits t children’s creativity. In additin, recent research
demnstrates that tys cntaining data can ptentially prevent language develpment, cmpared with traditinal puzzles and bricks.
On the ne hand, parents knw that they shuld limit their kids’ screen time t keep them healthy, and the American Academy f Pediatrics ffers guidance n daily screen time. On the ther hand, technlgy can be wnderfully engaging and can
prvide excellent educatinal pprtunities fr children. Nthing is perfect and we shuld embrace every aspect f a new thing.
32 .What are cmpanies like Fisher-Price currently explring?
A .The impact f technlgical advances n tys and parenting.
B .The way t be an utstanding glbal innvatin designer.
C .New ideas f making shrt vides f creative tys.

their Christmas wish lists. They were plite requests fr the latest game r ty. As the children gt lder, they wuld give Santa sme hints(提示)n where t buy their
presents. 36
Thse letters taught my children a valuable lessn abut writing: It has a
purpse. Smetimes ur purpse is t achieve smething;ther times it may be t
entertain, infrm, r persuade. 37 And when writing desn’t seem t have
any purpse r get any kind f meaningful respnse, then it can be hard t get excited abut ding it.
Christmas is a great time f year fr children t cmmunicate with thers
thrugh writing. When children write fr real audiences and real purpses, they can learn t chse their wrds accrdingly. 38 Yu write “Dear Santa” because yu dn’t knw him persnally and yu want t shw him respect.
39 Texting, nline messaging, live chats while playing vide games all mean that they are cnstantly prducing written messages. Hwever, because they are usually writing t family and friends, they use infrmal language mst f the time.
There is nthing wrng with this kind f writing. It suits the audience and the purpse and gets the jb dne. 40 This type f writing wn’t be rewarded by the schl examiner, nr by a future emplyer r a ptential client. The very best

My mst memrable Thanksgiving happened last year at ur lcal church. A

hliday meals fr families in ur cmmunity. We cntacted neighbrs and scial
wrkers fr families wh might be struggling. Their respnses were verwhelming: a single mther, Amy, wrking tw jbs t pay medical bills; an elderly cuple, Mr and Mrs Jnes, whse fixed incme culdn’t stretch; the Tmas family, whse huse was destryed by a recent fire …
Eventually, we created a list f 10 families in financial need, each t receive a
Thanksgiving fd basket. These were carefully prepared baskets with all necessities fr a big hliday meal: glden stuffing mix, green beans, sweet ptates, jellied
cranberry sauce, flur, butter, nins, and dessert items, and even turkeys and hams …
That night, the cmmunity hall buzzed with laughter and emtin. As each
family arrived t pick up the big basket, their gratitude was evident. Each family
talked abut their wn trubles and at the same time tried t answer thers’ prblems thughtfully. In that hall, there was warmth restred.
Just as the families were abut t leave, a father, mther, and a child with wrn but neat clthes stepped in. The father said they had simply heard that a church was
giving ut fd and decided t cme. Clearly, they were nt n ur list. I apprached them and explained that we were unable t prvide supplies tday fr an extra family due t limited resurces.
