decline slightly when the tags mentined the price included the added tax.
In a separate nline study, the researchers asked participants t estimate what
the tax wuld be n a can f their favrite drink that cst $1.52. The average estimate was 40 cents — much higher than the 12 cents actually demanded in San Francisc. When tld the tax was nly 12 cents, they reprted they’d still purchase the drink.

The search fr new, clean energy surces has ccupied the attentin f scientists and pliticians fr years. One cmmn resurce fr green energy is the wind. A new twist n this ld resurce culd cause the energy utput f wind-pwer plants t
rcket.
Standard wind-pwer plants rely n slid supprt and generally can nly reach a height f 200 meters r s. Higher than that, winds tend t be strnger and mre

Delft University f Technlgy in the Netherlands and Karlsruhe University f Applied Sciences in Germany have frmed a kite-pwer research grup. The grup is wrking t develp kites with wings cnnected t electrical generatrs (发电机) n the grund.

generatrs mre efficient and perfecting the autmatic flight cntrl and the structure f the kites. Nevertheless in June 2012, they demnstrated that their kites culd
perate autmatically at an altitude f up t 700 meters.
Meanwhile, in Italy, researchers are wrking n a similar pwer generatr that relies n kites. When the generatr, called KiteGen, senses the wind blwing, kites
are released frm the ends f ples with high-resistance cables (线) t cntrl their
height and angle. These cables are able t mve the kites if the system senses
incming bjects such as planes, helicpters r even individual birds. The kites
themselves are light, tugh and able t reach fairly high altitudes. They circle arund in the wind, which sets the cre f the generatr in mtin, prducing electric current.
KiteGen has the ptential t be very cst-effective in the lng run. After the initial cst f designing and setting up the plant, little additinal investment will be necessary, apart frm standard maintenance. The plant als requires relatively little
space, which makes it ideal fr cities and means that multiple plants can be set up t prvide even mre energy.
Kite pwer has the ptential t greatly imprve n current wind-pwer
strategies. In the future, it may be an efficient, cst-effective supplement (补充) t the ther surces f energy we use, r even a replacement fr sme f them.
12 .What des the underlined expressin “a new twist” prbably mean in the first paragraph?
A .A strict standard. B .A challenging task.
C .A strng mtivatin. D .A clever idea.
13 .If the wind-pwer plants are higher than 200 meters, what is the prblem?
A .It is a waste f mney. B .It is extremely dangerus.
C .It is hard t attain the energy. D .It is ttally unrealistic.
14 .Why d bth f the researches adpt kites?
A .Kites can fly high. B .Kites are a new trend.
C .Kites are ec-friendly. D .Kites can replace ld equipment.
15 .What is the authr’s attitude twards kite pwer?
A .Cautius. B .Optimistic. C .Unclear. D .Critical.
