D yu ever get t the train statin and realize yu frgt t bring smething t read? Yes, we all have ur phnes, but many f us still like t g ld schl and read smething printed.
Well, there’s a kisk (小亭) fr that. In the San Francisc Bay Area, at least.
“Yu enter the fare gates (检票口) and yu’ll see a kisk that is lit up and it tells yu can get a ne-minute, a three-minute, r a five-minute stry,” says Alicia Trst, the chief
cmmunicatins fficer fr the San Francisc Bay Area Rapid Transit — knwn as BART. “Yu chse which length yu want and it gives yu a receipt-like shrt stry.”
It’s that simple. Riders have printed nearly 20,000 shrt stries and pems since the prgram was launched last March. Sme are classic shrt stries, and sme are new riginal wrks.

Ridership n transit (交通) systems acrss the cuntry has been dwn the past half century, s culd shrt stries save transit?
      Trst thinks s.
“At the end f the day all transit agencies right nw are ding everything they can t
imprve the rider experience. S I abslutely think we will get mre riders just because f shrt stries,” she says.

Flds are amng the mst deadly and damaging disasters wrldwide. Many smaller
cmmunities, especially thse that have never experienced flds befre, lack the tls they need t detect (监测) and manage the disaster, leaving them struggling t face the full frce f flding.
T help prtect these cmmunities, the Natinal Space Agency (NSA) has partnered with several leading scientific grups t develp a new fld detectin tl called “Mdel f Mdels” (MM) . This tl cmbines data frm pen-surce hydrlgical (水文的) mdels with Earth
bserving satellite data t prduce glbal fld risk level updates several times a day. When the MM detects a high prbability f flding in an area, it sends a fld early warning t affected cmmunities, letting them quickly take the necessary steps t save lives and belngings.
“This new technlgy cvers the face f the glbe, enabling us t bserve fld risk and
predict the chance f flds in ways never befre pssible,” said Dr. Shan Clain, Manager fr
NSA’s Earth Science Applied Sciences Prgram. “The technlgy we’ve develped will make a
huge difference, enabling early actin by cmmunities arund the glbe — especially small island cmmunities and develping cuntries that lack the necessary early warning infrmatin t prtect themselves and their lved nes during fld events.” MM will be a game changer.
Until nw, full glbal fld early warnings have nt been pssible, either due t limitatins in hydrlgic mnitring netwrks, predictin mdels, r the prfessinal knwledge t perate and widely share their results, especially in small and underdevelped cuntries.
Oma Sam, a directr at the Internatinal Federatin f Red Crss and Red Crescent
Scieties, said: “Effective early warning infrmatin is shwn t save lives. Hwever, traditinal fld early warning has s far been expensive and requires lcal funding, resurces, knwledge as well as regular care. I am lking frward t helping NSA prvide this pwerful MM t all
cmmunities s that early warnings can reach the last mile.”
8 .What can we learn abut MM frm paragraph 2?
A .It sends early warnings several times a day. B .It frequently updates glbal fld risk levels.
C.It is specially fr fld-affected cmmunities.D.It relies n human bservatin t detect flds.
9 .What des paragraph 3 mainly tell us abut MM?
A .Its peratinal steps. B .Its develpment histry.
C .Its value and effect. D .Its technlgy prgress.
10 .What can be inferred frm the last tw paragraphs?
A .Early warning infrmatin is enugh t save lives.
B .MM has been prvided t all the cmmunities nw.
C .MM is expected t beat sme past system limitatins.
D .MM is well-received in small develping cuntries.
11 .What is the best title fr the passage?
A .MM: A Breakthrugh in Glbal Fld Early Warning.
B .NSA: A Partner f Small Cmmunities in Fld Rescue.
C .MM Saves Small Cmmunities Frm Fld Disasters.
D .NSA Leads the Imprvement f Fld Detectin Tls.

Peple have been wndering why elephants d nt develp cancer even thugh they have lifespans that are similar t humans, living fr arund 50 t 70 years.
Nw scientists believe they knw why. A team at the University f Chicag has fund that elephants carry a substantial number f genes that stp tumrs develping. T be precise, they
fund 20 cpies f an anti-tumr gene called TP53 in elephants. Mst ther species, including humans, nly carry ne cpy.
Accrding t the research, the extra cpies f the gene imprve the animal’s sensitivity t
DNA damage, which lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged befre they can g n t frm deadly tumrs.
“An increased risk f develping cancer has std in the way f the evlutin (进化) f
large bdy sizes in many animals,” the study authr Dr. Vincent Lynch tld The Guardian. If
every living cell has the same chance f becming cancerus, large creatures with a lng lifespan like whales and elephants shuld have a greater risk f develping cancer than humans and rats. But acrss species, the risk f cancer des nt shw a cnnectin with bdy mass.
This phenmenn was fund by Oxfrd University scientist Richard Pet in the 1970s and later named “Pet’s paradx”. Bilgists believe it results frm larger animals using prtectin
that many smaller animals d nt use. In the elephant’s case, the making fTP53 is nature’s way f keeping this species alive.
The study als fund that when the same genes were brught t life in rats, they had the same cancer resistance as elephants. This means researchers culd use the discvery t develp new treatments that can help stp cancer spreading r even develping in the first place.
“Nature has already figured ut hw t prevent cancer,” said Jshua Schiffman, a bilgist at the Schl f Medicine, the University f Utah. “It’s up t us t learn hw different animals
deal with the prblem s that we can use thse strategies t prevent cancer in peple.”
12 .Why are elephants unlikely t develp cancer?
A .They have a rather large bdy size.
B .Their genes suffer n DNA damage.
C .Certain genes in their bdy kill existing tumrs.
D .They carry many genes t prevent tumrs develping.
13 .Accrding t the passage, what has been a risk in the evlutin f large animals?
A .Deadly tumrs. B .The huge bdy mass.
C .Cells killing themselves. D .Sensitivity t DNA damage.
14 .What des the underlined part “This phenmenn” in Paragraph 5 prbably refer t?
A .Larger animals have prtectin frm TP53.
B .The risk f cancer is nt related t bdy sizes.
C .Larger animals suffer the same risk f cancer as smaller nes.
D .The huger animals are, the bigger risk f cancer they will have.
15 .What can be cncluded frm the passage?
A .Depending n nature is surely enugh t fight against cancer.
B .The TP53 genes have prved useful in stpping cancer in peple.
C .Humans are expected t prevent cancer with the making fTP53.
D .The extra cpies f elephants’ genes are used t cure cancer patients.
