On 7 May 1824, a crwd f music lvers streamed int a theatre in Vienna t hear the first-ever perfrmance f the great Ludwig van Beethven’s Symphny N.9. The crwd immediately recgnized that they were listening t smething truly special, and they brke int enthusiastic cheers at the end f the symphny. Beethven, wh was almst cmpletely deaf at this pint in his life, was unaware f the audience’s respnse until ne f the singers turned him arund t face the crwd. Befre him, he saw a sea f peple all standing, clapping, and waving their hats and handkerchiefs t express their appreciatin f his masterwrk.

Symphny N.9 was Beethven’s last majr piece f music in a vast bdy f wrks written thrughut his remarkable life. As a gifted child, Beethven was pushed by his father t study music day and night. Nt lng after, he began t be appreciated fr his pian perfrmances. By the time he was a teenager, he had already enjyed a reputatin as a wnderful yung musician. Many imprtant figures in the music wrld, including the brilliant musician Mzart, started making predictins abut Beethven’s extrardinary future. Hwever, life tk a sharp turn. In his late twenties, Beethven suffered ne f the wrst pssible twists fr a musician: he started t lsing his hearing.
The lss f his hearing deeply depressed Beethven. He was s upset that, at first, he wanted t keep it a secret. In a letter t his brthers, he wrte, “…hw culd I pssibly admit a weakness in the ne sense which shuld be mre perfect in me than in thers, a sense which I nce pssessed it the greatest perfectin…” Even in his darkest mments, hwever, Beethven never abandned hpe. Despite his hearing lss, he was determined t find a way t cntinue living a life full f music. He used a variety f hearing aids t try t increase the amunt f sund he culd take in. When cmpsing music at the pian, he wuld put ne end f a pencil in his muth and place the ther end against the instrument s that he culd feel the ntes. Althugh Beethven was able t cntinue cmpsing music, it can be increasingly difficult fr him t perfrm in public. When Beethven presented Symphny N.9 in Vienna in 1824, it was his first time n stage in ver ten years.

Since that day, Beethven’s Symphny N.9 has becme ne f the mst famus and treasured pieces in the histry f classical music. The first mvement starts quietly, but all f a sudden the whle rchestra breaks int an energetic theme. Yu can sn feel the determinatin --- a quality Beethven understd well because f his hearing difficulties --- cursing thrugh the music. The next tw mvements are full f desperate lws and uplifting highs which perhaps reflect bth his suffering and his strng will t fight it. The music mves thrugh technically difficult sectins with ease, shwing his genius as a cmpser. Finally, in the furth mvement, he cnnects all f the different variatins int a jyful chrus.
