Ocean pllutin is a serius and grwing prblem wrldwide. Plastic waste is a majr cntributr — it breaks dwn int very small pieces called micrplastics, which can give ff harmful substances int the water that then enter the fd chain. Scientists als wrry that
micrplastics might affect hw cean plants stre carbn, a prcess imprtant fr ur climate. Beynd plastic, a wide range f cean litter pses equal threats: lst fishing nets, abandned cntainers, and ther waste can trap r harm sea animals, upsetting marine ecsystems.
T help slve this prblem, a team in Germany has created a special underwater rbt
called the Smart Grapple. This independent rbt can find and pick up litter frm the cean flr. It uses a smart cmputer system and a camera t spt waste. In dark r dirty water, it uses sund
waves t generate images instead. The rbt has a strng, fur-fingered hand that can lift bjects
as heavy as 250 kilgrams. Once cllected, the litter is placed n a small rbtic bat that carries it t land fr recycling.
The rbt is linked t a supprt bat by a cable (电缆) that gives it pwer. A researcher
explained that this cable als functins like a crane t help lift heavy items t the surface, which is easier than the rbt swimming up with them.
The Smart Grapple has been tested successfully in harbrs in France and Germany,
cllecting many different types f litter. The researchers believe these rbts will be mst useful in specific, imprtant areas like busy prts r prtected natural spaces.
One f the hardest parts f building the rbt was training it t tell the difference between
litter and natural things like rcks r plants. The team did this by shwing it ver 7,500 pictures f underwater bjects, with each ne labeled as litter r natural. Experts hpe that systems like this
will be ready fr wider use arund 2030 t 2033, prviding a helpful new tl t clean ur ceans.
      24 .What is a harmful result f micrplastics accrding t paragraph 1?

C .It relies n light reflectin t wrk effectively. D .It can perate in varying underwater cnditins.
26 .What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A .Functins f the cable. B .The way t link the rbt t bats.
C .Hw the rbt sends data t the surface. D .The harm f heavy underwater items.

T truly understand a place, reading bks r listening t travelers’ stries abut it is nt enugh. Only by standing n its land, using its language, and experiencing it firsthand can yu truly say, “I knw this place.”
Lndn, fr me, became mre than just a city f kings and queens r a financial center f the wrld — it came alive in ways I culd never have imagined. Lndn’s life desn’t nly exist in its grand palaces. Yu can feel it n the streets, in the undergrund, and in the pubs. As yu

seemed discnnected. And even thugh peple culd understand me perfectly, speaking nt in my mther tngue felt a bit dd and made me feel like an utsider.
I als realized that life in Lndn isn’t easy fr everyne. Everything seems t cme with a price — whether it’s getting gd service at a restaurant r entering a museum exhibit. It felt like access t the “gd life” was smething yu really had t pay fr.
Lndn is a city that attracts, inspires and smetimes deceives (欺骗). But after walking its

In trpical regins such as the Amazn and Panama, the ppulatins f sme birds have fallen by as much as 90 percent even in mstly untuched rainfrests, and it seems that mre intense heat extremes are the main factr behind the decline.
Between 1950 and 2020, the intensificatin f heat extremes led t a fall f between 25% and 38% in the ppulatin f land-dwelling (陆栖的) birds in the trpics, accrding t a study by Maximilian Ktz at the Barcelna Supercmputing Center and his c-wrkers.
The team hasn’t yet used these results t extraplate what will happen as the planet cntinues t heat up, but “maybe it’s nt a gdlking picture,” says Ktz.
Ktz and his c-wrkers started with data n land-dwelling bird ppulatins arund the
wrld frm the Living Planet Database. They then gt data n habitat destructin frm the Hyde Database f the Glbal Envirnment and histrical weather and climate data frm the Eurpean Centre fr Mediumrange Weather Frecasts. They cmpared all the data t find cnnectins that
might explain the fall in bird ppulatin. In the mid-latitudes (中纬度) between 21° and 43° nrth r suth, habitat destructin was the main factr, their findings suggest. “But in the trpics, heat extremes were the biggest factr. In these regins, birds are ften living near the limits f their
tlerance and will die if the temperature is beynd the limits,” says Ktz.
They als investigated the extent t which the intensificatin in heat extremes is due t
human-caused glbal warming. This allwed them t estimate the decline in bird ppulatin that results frm climate change.
“Studies like this have lng been used t assess the link between extreme weather and
climate change, but,” says Ktz, “as far as I knw, this study is the first t use them t lk at
eclgical impacts in this way.” He admits that the data n bird ppulatin is far frm cmplete, especially in trpical regins. If anything, the shrtage f such data wuld make us judge the
impacts t be less severe than they actually are.
32 .What des the underlined wrd “extraplate” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
      A .Chse. B .Frecast. C .Stimulate. D .Witness
33 .What mainly leads t the decline in bird ppulatin in mid-latitudes?
      A .Intense heat. B.Habitat lss. C.Lack f fd surces. D.Human-caused pllutin.
34 .What can we infer frm Ktz’s statement in the last paragraph?
A .The effects are underrated due t data gaps. B .Trpical bird decline was less than recrded.
C .The study is the first t fcus n extreme weather. D .Climate change has limited impacts n trpical birds.
35 .What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A.Birds Disappear with Rainfrest Lss B.Scientists Use Databases in Wildlife Tracking C .Habitat Destructin Threatens Birds SeverelyD .Extreme Heat Is Driving Decline in Trpical Birds
