And, because unicrns are indeed very rare t find, the department is als giving Madeline a ty unicrn t keep her cmpany during her search, as a tken f appreciatin.
“It is always rewarding t hear frm yung peple wh thughtfully cnsider the requirements f prviding a lving hme fr animals,” Mayeda wrte in the letter. “I like yur sense f respnsible pet wnership t seek permissin in advance t keep a unicrn in Ls Angeles Cunty.”
Mayeda tld the Washingtn Pst that this is the first time the department has received a request fr a license fr a unicrn r any mythical creature. They were impressed with the first-grader fr wanting t ask permissin in the first place, and ding her research t wrk ut hw t g abut that. She and her clleagues deal with a lt f “life-and-death” issues n the jb, whether that’s seeing cases f animal abuse r animals hurting peple r making decisins abut having t put dwn dangerus r sick animals. S Madeline’s letter has cnsiderably brightened their spirits, and she is due t visit the department this week t discuss her unicrn license applicatin. Safe t say, she’s in fr a magical surprise.

A prehistric fssil uncvered in Antarctica culd be the ldest mdern bird ever fund and an ancestr f tday’s ducks and geese. The discvery culd help scientists cntinue piecing tgether the lng evlutinary histry f birds.
The nearly cmplete bird skull is abut 69 millin years ld. Called Vegavis iaai, it belngs t a species f waterfwl (birds that include ducks, geese, and swans) that lived at the same time as dinsaurs like Tyrannsaurus rex. Only the duck-like species survived when all dinsaurs that were nt avian died ut abut 66 millin years ag.
The mystery f Vegavis iaai began in 1993,when researchers discvered the fssil f a bird n Vega Island in Antarctica. It did nt have a skull, which made it difficult t fully identify. Julia Clarke, a palentlgist (scientist wh studies fssils) at the University f Texas, Austin, was ne f the scientists wh fund the first fssil. She thught it was related t mdern waterfwl but culdn’t prve that withut the creature’s skull.
Then, in 2011, researchers fund a skull n Vega Island. They recently cnfirmed that it was a match fr the skeletn frm 1993, which prvided an pprtunity t determine whether Vegavis iaai was cnnected t tday’s ducks and geese.
The researchers created a digital 3D mdel f the Vegavis iaai skull, which shwed that its brain was shaped like the brains f tday’s ducks and geese. Hwever, it had a lng, narrw beak and pwerful jaw muscles that made it different frm waterfwl and mre like mdern birds that dive and catch fish.
Despite the range f characteristics, the study’s authrs believe Vegavis iaai is related t tday’s waterfwl. “It’s exactly the kind f thing we need t help fill in an evlutinary gap.” Christpher Trres, a c-authr f the new study, tld The New Yrk Times. Other scientists are nt cnvinced, hwever, and argue that mre fssils f the species are needed t fully cnfirm the findings.
Trres and his clleagues understand that there is mre wrk t be dne t supprt their findings and that their cnclusins are cntrversial. “Few birds are as likely t start as many arguments amng palentlgists as Vegavis.” Trres tld Science News.
      28. What des the underlined wrd “avian” in Paragraph 2 mst likely mean?
      A. Related t water.
      B. Related t birds.
      C. Similar t dinsaurs.
      D. Related t fish.
      29. Why is the discvery in 1993 mentined?
      A. T explain the challenges in cnfirming the identity f Vegavis iaai.
      B. T describe the prcess f fssil preservatin in Antarctica.
      C. T highlight Julia Clarke’s cntributins t palentlgy.
      D. T intrduce the final cnclusin abut Vegavis iaai’s evlutin.
      30. Which f the fllwing is TRUE accrding t the text?
      A. The 1993 fssil included a cmplete skull.
      B. Vegavis iaai lived nly after the extinctin f all dinsaurs.
      C. The study’s cnclusins are widely accepted by all scientists.
      D. Vegavis iaai had a brain shape similar t mdern fish-catching birds.
      31. What will the fllw-up study prbably fcus n?
      A. Creating mre 3D mdels f ancient bird brains.
      B. Studying the impact f dinsaur extinctin n waterfwl.
      C. Finding mre fssils f Vegavis iaai t cnfirm its relatinship t mdern birds.
      D. Analyzing the differences in jaw muscles between Vegavis iaai and diving birds.

Yu have prbably heard f the Fermi Paradx (费米悖论) . Given the high prbability that alien (外星人) life exists ut there in the universe, why has nbdy gt in tuch yet?
Answers t the paradx range frm the ptimistic t the dwnright frightening. It culd be that we simply haven’t sent ut ur wn traceable signatures fr aliens t find us yet. Or it culd be that n aliens will ever make it t the pint where they are able t make cntact with ther species.
In Three Bdy Prblem, Cixin Liu’s science fictin, he describes the universe as a dark frest, where each alien sciety is like a fearful, armed hunter cautiusly mving frth. If that hunter finds ther life, he is left with the safest curse f actin: t wipe ut any ther life frms befre they can d the same t him.
Being fearful cntributes t humans’ develpment. Our cautin may save ur lives when facing a genuine threat. “Take the initiative in the cmpetitin, and yu may sleep mre securely while getting extra resurces,” says Seth Shstak, a senir astrnmer.
Thankfully, the Dark Frest has lts f issues that are difficult t reslve — the mst bvius being that it’s extremely difficult t hide a technlgically advanced wrld. “We’ve never given the slightest thught t turning ff all the radars (雷达) and ging cmpletely silent because it might be dangerus,” says Shstak.
The frest thery als falls apart when yu cnsider the true nature f the universe. “The distances between planets are likely t be s vast that the idea that they wuld feel the need t attack ne anther seems dd. Even if they fear each ther, the expanse means that they wuldn’t likely need t cmpete fr the near-limitless resurces,” says Shstak.
That desn’t necessarily mean that the Dark Frest thery is a nnstarter. Addressing the hles in the thery requires adding up the terrr factr. Suppse that a technlgical civilizatin is ging frm star t star destrying any sign f life whenever planets with life r technlgy are fund. We dn’t see them because they’re nt there. That’s the really scary thing.
      32. What d we knw abut the Fermi Paradx?
      A. It denies aliens’ existence.B. It is studied thrughly.
      C. Its answers vary cnsiderably.D. Its answers are similar.
      33. What can be inferred frm Shstak’s wrds in Paragraph 4?
      A. Fear is deadly. B. Attacks are risky.
      C. Fear cntrls humans’ develpment. D. Attacks has survival value.
      34. Which factr challenges the Dark Frest thery accrding t Shstak?
      A. Aliens may nt understand human culture.
      B. The vastness f space makes attacks less likely.
      C. Advanced civilizatins tend t cmpete fr survival.
      D. Cmpetitin fr resurces culd becme mre serius.
      35. Why des the authr make the assumptin in the last paragraph?
      A. T prve aliens are scary.B. T find hles in the thery.
      C. T add t hrrible atmsphere.D. T warn us f the ptential threat.
