I was a smartphne addict. My eyes were glued t the little screen whenever I walked dwn the street, had dinner with friends r lay in bed at night. The firstthing I did when I wke up in the mrning was reach fr my phne. I always asked fr Wi-Fi cnnectins when I went t a new restaurant r cffee shp. A dead battery in my smartphne wuld make me feel stressed.
Smetimes I had the uncmfrtable feeling that this little machine had taken up t much f my time, and that I culd have dne smething mre meaningful than just lking at a tiny screen all day. Sliding int the habit was easy, but it was difficult t quit the habit.
Then the day came when I finally realized I had t make a change. Head dwn, eyes n my smartphne, I stepped int the rad and a car sht past, nearly kncking me ff my feet! At that very mment, I made up my mind t spend a whle week withut my smartphne.
The first day was the hardest. I was used t checking the news and my friends’ scial media updates every few minutes, but nw I did nt knw what t d with myself. I kept reaching fr my pcket, fr my smartphne that was nt there. I felt lst and anxius, as if I had missed smething f value. Very sn, time slwed dwn. The empty hurs stretched ut in frnt f me, and I felt discnnected frm everyne and everything.
It was scary at first. Then smehw I began t feel free. The things that I had time fr! I finally picked up the classic nvel I had always wanted t read and was sn lst in the beautiful language. I kept a jurnal f my feelings, thughts and daily activities t see hw much prgress I was making.
I went ut fr a run and felt mre alive than I had in days. The details f the scene were revealed in frnt f me: the sft sunlight, a bird singing frm a high tree branch, the rich and earthy smell f the sil after the rain. Best f all, I began t appreciate the beauty in life with my wn eyes, instead f thrugh my smartphne camera.
My ffline relatinships benefited as well. I went fr a lng walk with an ld friend. Our wide-ranging cnversatin went s much deeper than brief texts ever culd. With eyes n lnger fixed n ur phnes, we had a chance t really enjy each ther’s cmpany. I als made sure t spend mre time with my parents. We went t the pera, played badmintn, and visited museums. One night, my mther tk ut sme family phts and we laughed abut ld times. I brught them up t date with what was ging n in my life. We had never felt clser t each ther.
By the end f the week, I almst did nt want t turn my phne back n. Thse seven days have given me a great appreciatin fr life beynd the screen. Real life—and real relatinships—are mre imprtant t me nw. I cannt escape frm the mdern wrld, but I can cut back n the amunt f time I spend n my smartphne every day, and I d. Life beynd smartphnes is richer and mre beautiful, and I am ging t take advantage f it.
