      Be careful when listening fr years: it is nrmal t treat the first tw numbers and the last tw numbers separately, but there are varius ways f saying them. In general, speakers try t use the shrtest way pssible, fr example, 1979 (nineteen seventy-nine), 2003 (tw thusand and three), 1805 (eighteen five). Smetimes we add mid- befre a certain year, e.g. mid-2008. We als use expressins like the early/late 1980s.

      Gd mrning, class. Tday I’m ging t talk abut the Internet. I’m sure all f yu use the Internet, but what d yu knw abut it? Nw let me tell yu abut its histry and develpment.The first general-purpse cmputers came nt the market in the early 1950s, but it was nly in 1969 that scientists invented a way fr cmputers t cmmunicate with each ther. This meant that cmputers allwed peple t pass messages alng a netwrk and talk t each ther. T start with, nly fur cmputers were cnnected and the netwrk was fr military use. Public cmmercial use f the Internet began in mid-1989.
      One f the main applicatins f the Internet is the Wrld Wide Web. Pages n the Wrld Wide Web are called websites and can be accessed thrugh the Internet. They were riginally used as a space fr scientists arund the wrld t share infrmatin. The wrld’s first website was built in 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee, a British scientist. He then taught thers hw t build their wn websites, allwing the Internet t grw.Within 24 years, there were mre than 1 billin websites nline. Tw years later, in 2016, 3.6 billin peple were using the Internet—abut 48 per cent f the wrld’s ppulatin at the time. And increasingly, peple are using their phnes t access the Internet. The future is definitely nline and it’s definitely mbile.
