When we pass thrugh an art gallery, what determines ur idea f beauty? While it is ften said that beauty is in the eye f the behlder (观看者), this is nt the whle stry. When lking at paintings, we dn’t judge each ne n its wn wrth. Instead, we carry a bias (偏向), accrding t a new study by researchers frm the University f Sydney.
Led by PhD student Ms. Sujin Kim, the research invlved a series f 40 paintings presented t 24 bservers. The participants were asked t rate the artistic beauty f each painting n a screen. The paintings described scenery r still life. The first questin the 24 bservers were asked t respnd t was whether they rated each painting independently f what they had just seen. T d this, the series f paintings was presented 20 times with each run having a different rder. In this way, a given painting was rated 20 times. The data was clear: the bservers didn’t rate each painting cnsistently (一致地) but were biased by what they had just seen?
“Many peple suppse a kind f ‘cntrast effect’ whereby a painting may lk mre attractive if it fllws an unattractive painting,” Prfessr Alais said. “The surprising result was that the bias was a psitive ne: paintings were rated higher fllwing an attractive painting, r lwer, fllwing unattractive nes.”
The research refers t this effect as “serial dependence”, which describes a systemic bias twards the recent past experience. Previus studies have fund that many types f input including directin, facial expressin and attractiveness are systematically biased by recent past experience. This has ptential applicatins in varius fields where the rder f presentatin can impact cnsumer preferences.
“Perhaps art gallery managers have knwn all alng abut the bias twards the recent past,” Prfessr Alais said. “They ften keep the best pieces fr the last and build up t it. Our study shws this wuld ensure an accumulating (积累的) effect and guarantee a big finish.”

      C. The types f the paintings. D. The paintings’ arrangement.

Nw, scientists have carried ut the experiment with tw species f snakes: 18 African ball pythns and 36 eastern garter snakes. Because f snakes’ pr ability t see, the researchers adapted the classic mirrr test. They cllected five scents: The snake’s wn scent, its wn scent mixed with live il, the scent f pure live il, the scent f anther snake and the scent f anther snake mixed with live il.
African ball pythns spent a similar amunt f time with each scent. But eastern garter snakes paid much mre attentin t their wn scent that had been mixed with that f live il. The scientists suggest the garter snakes recgnized themselves by nticing the unexpected change in their smell. “They nly d lng tngue flicks (轻弹) when they’re interested in smething,” Miller says
“I think their experimental mdel is mre pwerful than the mirrr test,” Ruln Clark, a bilgist, says.” A highly reflective mirrred surface desn’t have a lt f equals in the natural envirnment. But researching chemical signals like scents left by a species and its fellw members well infrms urselves abut hw the species learns abut itself and interacts with the envirnment.”
Researchers cnducted a similar study in 2021 with 24 eastern garter snakes. Instead f scents and live il, they bserved the snakes’ interest in cage liners (衬垫)—their wn, versus thse f ther snakes with bth similar and dissimilar diets. By bserving hw lng a snake flicked its tngue befre each liner, that team als shwed that the snakes fcused n their wn scents mre than thers’.
“Snakes are believed t be bring animals that are nt very smart, but ur research shws that they display many f the same clever features as ther animals. 【解析】推断。根据第四段…mirrred surface desn’t…chemical species with the envirnment可知,传统测试中使用的镜子在动物生存环境中并不常见,而动物身上的化学信息有助于人类了解动物的自我认识及与环境的互动,由此推断新模型有助于人类对动物行为的深度探索。
      15.【答案】C。
      【解析】推断。根据末段they shw…clever features…respect the species’ bilgy…the right questins可推知,Grdn Burghardt想说明研究者应采用与物种生物特性匹配的研究方法。
