I understand that it’s nt practical t prtect every fragment (碎片) f the past, but there must be a way t dcument and raise awareness abut these sites, s that mre f ur histry can be maintained.”
T deal with the challenge, INTACH hsts heritage walks. The walks mainly fcus n the lcal cmmunity and are targeted at the citizens f the city. “While we d welcme turists and travellers, ur emphasis is n engaging the lcal ppulatin,” says Meera. When we pass thrugh an art gallery, what determines ur idea f beauty? While it is ften said that beauty is in the eye f the behlder (观看者), this is nt the whle stry. When lking at paintings, we dn’t judge each ne n its wn wrth. Instead, we carry a bias (偏向), accrding t a new study by researchers frm the University f Sydney.
Led by PhD student Ms. Sujin Kim, the research invlved a series f 40 paintings presented t 24 bservers. The participants were asked t rate the artistic beauty f each painting n a screen. The paintings described scenery r still life. The first questin the 24 bservers were asked t respnd t was whether they rated each painting independently f what they had just seen. T d this, the series f paintings was presented 20 times with each run having a different rder. In this way, a given painting was rated 20 times. The data was clear: the bservers didn’t rate each painting cnsistently (一致地) but were biased by what they had just seen?
“Many peple suppse a kind f ‘cntrast effect’ whereby a painting may lk mre attractive if it fllws an unattractive painting,” Prfessr Alais said. “The surprising result was that the bias was a psitive ne: paintings were rated higher fllwing an attractive painting, r lwer, fllwing unattractive nes.”
The research refers t this effect as “serial dependence”, which describes a systemic bias twards the recent past experience. Previus studies have fund that many types f input including directin, facial expressin and attractiveness are systematically biased by recent past experience. This has ptential applicatins in varius fields where the rder f presentatin can impact cnsumer preferences.
“Perhaps art gallery managers have knwn all alng abut the bias twards the recent past,” Prfessr Alais said. “They ften keep the best pieces fr the last and build up t it. Our study shws this wuld ensure an accumulating (积累的) effect and guarantee a big finish.”
8. What factr mst likely influenced the bservers’ rating f paintings in the study?
A. The rating times. B. The neighbring viewers.
C. The types f the paintings. D. The paintings’ arrangement.
9. Which example agrees with the psitive bias mentined by Prfessr Alais?
A. Buy a prduct mainly due t psitive reviews.

In the classic mirrr test, an animal is marked n an area f the bdy by scientists and then placed befre a mirrr. If the animal tuches r explres the mark, it is taken as an indicatin that it regards the reflected image as an image f itself, rather than f anther animal.
Nw, scientists have carried ut the experiment with tw species f snakes: 18 African ball pythns and 36 eastern garter snakes. Because f snakes’ pr ability t see, the researchers adapted the classic mirrr test. They cllected five scents: The snake’s wn scent, its wn scent mixed with live il, the scent f pure live il, the scent f anther snake and the scent f anther snake mixed with live il.
African ball pythns spent a similar amunt f time with each scent. But eastern garter snakes paid much mre attentin t their wn scent that had been mixed with that f live il. The scientists suggest the garter snakes recgnized themselves by nticing the unexpected change in their smell. “They nly d lng tngue flicks (轻弹) when they’re interested in smething,” Miller says
“I think their experimental mdel is mre pwerful than the mirrr test,” Ruln Clark, a bilgist, says.” A highly reflective mirrred surface desn’t have a lt f equals in the natural envirnment. But researching chemical signals like scents left by a species and its fellw members well infrms urselves abut hw the species learns abut itself and interacts with the envirnment.”
Researchers cnducted a similar study in 2021 with 24 eastern garter snakes. Instead f scents and live il, they bserved the snakes’ interest in cage liners (衬垫)—their wn, versus thse f ther snakes with bth similar and dissimilar diets. By bserving hw lng a snake flicked its tngue befre each liner, that team als shwed that the snakes fcused n their wn scents mre than thers’.
“Snakes are believed t be bring animals that are nt very smart, but ur research shws that they display many f the same clever features as ther animals. We can make prgress in this field if we respect the species’ bilgy and way f dealing with the wrld and ask the right questins,” Grdn Burghardt, the study’s lead authr, says.
12. What is the classic mirrr test intended t test abut animals?
A. Natural changes in their lks. B. Their self-recgnitin ability.
C. Differences in their visin. D. Their adaptability.
13.Hw did the researchers adapt the mirrr test fr snakes?
A. By adding mirrr types. B. By including tw species.
C. By giving them visin training. D. By relying n their sense f smell.
14. Why is the new experimental mdel cnsidered mre pwerful?
A. It enables deeper explratin f animal behavir.
B. It can drive better treatment f chemical scents.
C. It benefits nature prtectin during studies.
D. It can reduce cmpetitin amng species.
15. What inspiratin des Grdn Burghardt prbably want t share?

Scientists at the University f Rchester have fund that blinking (眨眼睛) plays a bigger rle than we thught. Typically, t clear dust ut f ur eyes 1 (regard) as the main reasn why we blink. That’s 2 (evident) reasnable. But the fact is that ur eyes 3 (respnd) seems t much. On average, humans blink up t 20 times every minute. Althugh each blink nly lasts between 0.1 and 0.4 secnds, that adds up t arund 8% f ur waking hurs spent 4 ur eyes clsed. The brain has t wrk harder 5 (fight) thse cnstant mvements, s it desn’t seem wrthwhile t take the truble withut getting any ther benefit in return.
The Rchester researchers set ut t figure ut 6 that benefit might be. The team tracked eye mvements in humans and cupled the data with cmputer mdels. The scientists fund that the rapid eye mvement during a blink changes the light patterns. 7 (send) a different type f visual (视觉的) signal t the brain. Blinking helps peple take in the “big picture” f a scene, 8 ntice large-scale, slwly changing patterns.
“We shw that humans benefit frm blinking thrugh the infrmatin 9 (cmmunicate) by the eye mvement.” Said Bin Yang, first authr f the study. “Thus, different frm the 10 (establish) belief, blinking imprves visual prcessing rather than damaging it.”
