      Why is Fan Jinshi called “the daughter f Dunhuang”?
      Fan Jinshi: the daughter f DunhuangDunhuang’s Mga Caves is ne f China’s first UNESCO Wrld Heritage Sites. It has the wrld’s largest cllectin f Buddhist art. The caves are full f priceless wall paintings and sculptures. Unfrtunately, the site has been damaged by sand, weather and human activity. Thanks t the hard wrk f Fan Jinshi and her clleagues, we can still see these cultural treasures tday. Fan began wrking as an archaelgist in Dunhuang after she graduated frm Peking University. Her jb was t study and prtect the Dunhuang artwrks. One day when she was cmparing ld phts with new nes, she made a shcking discvery. Sme caves were cmpletely different, and sme f the ld artwrks were gne. “Will this happen t all the paintings?” she wndered. Fan made up her mind: she had t save these cultural treasures. Fan and her clleagues did everything they culd: they limited the number f visitrs, they put drs n the caves, and they did their best t cntrl the temperature and humidity inside. Hwever, Fan sn realized that the damage culd nly be slwed dwn—they culd nt stp it cmpletely. In this harsh natural envirnment, these caves simply wuldn’t last frever. It was heartbreaking t think abut it, but Fan did nt give up. She and her clleagues cntinued t search fr ways f preserving the treasures. They finally decided t make digital cpies f the paintings. This was the start f the Digital Dunhuang prject. After many years f hard wrk, the first part f the cllectin came nline in 2016. Nw, peple all ver the wrld can explre the unique art f the Mga Caves withut leaving their hmes. Fan has dedicated her life t researching and preserving this imprtant part f China’s cultural heritage. “The lnger I’ve stayed here, the deeper my lve has grwn fr Dunhuang,” Fan said. That is why peple call her “the daughter f Dunhuang”.

      Narratr: In the 4th century CE, the first cave was built in Dunhuang and peple there cntinued t dig caves fr almst a thusand years. Since 1944, several generatins f vlunteers have wrked tirelessly t prtect the Mga Caves. Lu Jie: My name is Lu Jie. I have wrked in the Art Institute fr 30 years. Mre than 1,000 years ag, peple started digging caves in Dunhuang. Artists created these beautiful cave murals. In the early 20th century, the famus Library Cave was discvered by accident. Sme freign explrers heard abut this and travelled t Dunhuang. The manuscripts and silk paintings were taken ut f China and ended up in ther cuntries. In the 1940s, many educated peple in China called fr the caves t be prtected. In 1944, the Natinal Dunhuang Art Institute was established. A grup f artists and schlars began t prtect and study the art in Dunhuang. These artists and schlars were led by Chang Shuhng, an artist returning frm France. At that time, there was nthing ut here except fr sme ld ruins. They had t walk thrugh the desert and muntains t get t the city.Narratr: In 1943, 12-year-ld Chang Shana came t Dunhuang with her father Chang Shuhng. Even thugh the living cnditins were difficult, they devted themselves t cpying and prtecting the ancient murals. Chang Shana: My father taught me hw t cpy murals in my teens. I cpied several f the mst imprtant nes. After the Peple’s Republic f China was funded, Liang Sicheng and Lin Huiyin inspired me t use patterns frm Dunhuang in mdern arts and crafts. Sn, I was asked t design the ceiling f the Great Hall f the Peple. The Mga Caves have been here fr mre than 1,000 years. The paintings cntain s many different styles and shapes that it’s impssible t cunt them all. I lve telling the yunger generatin abut what I have learnt during my life. It’s imprtant t pass n this knwledge frm generatin t generatin.Han Weimeng: I am Han Weimeng. I came t Dunhuang Academy in 2003 with my wife. It has been 16 years since I came t Dunhuang. We are the furth generatin f peple studying and prtecting the art here. Life is very simple here: hme, studi and caves. Befre we g int the caves, we d sme preparatin wrk in the studi, such as line drawing. After that, we g back t the caves t finish the cluring part. Nw, this ne I’m cpying is ne f the mst classic murals. It was painted in the Tang dynasty, in Cave 217. We can see that the lines clse t the skin are very pwerful, and the style f this part is much freer. The clurs became very deep and strng in the Tang dynasty, and we can see that in this painting.
