Here they are having a cnversatin after dinner abut time travel.“But,” said the Medical Man, “if Time is really nly a furth dimensin f Space, why can’t we mve in Time as we mve abut in the ther dimensins f Space?”The Time Traveller smiled. “Are yu s sure we can mve freely in Space? We can g right and left, backward and frward, but nt up and dwn.”“Nt exactly,” said the Medical Man. “There are ballns.”“Yes, but nt befre the ballns.” “Well, they culd a bit,” said the Medical Man. “But yu can’t mve at all in Time. We can’t get away frm the present mment.”“My dear sir, I’m srry t disappint yu but yu’re wrng abut this. The whle wrld is wrng. We always get away frm the present mment. Our thughts pass alng the Time-Dimensin frm the cradle t the grave.” The Psychlgist ndded. He agreed with the Medical Man, “Yu can mve abut in all directins f Space, but yu can’t mve abut in Time.”“Yu are wrng. Fr example, if I am remembering an event very clearly, I g back t the mment when it happened. I jump back fr a mment. Of curse, I can’t stay back fr lng. But if a man can g up in a balln, why shuldn’t he stp r speed up alng the Time-Dimensin, r even travel the ther way?” “Oh, this,” began Filby, “is all nnsense.”“Why nt?” said the Time Traveller. “It’s against reasn,” said Filby.“What reasn?” said the Time Traveller.“Yu can argue that black is white,” said Filby, “but yu will never make me believe.”“Pssibly nt,” said the Time Traveller. “But nw yu begin t see my reasn fr studying the Fur Dimensins. Lng ag I had a vague idea f a machine—”“T travel thrugh Time!” said the Very Yung Man.
