Xiujuan was brn in Zhalng, Heilngjiang Prvince, in 1964. Her father lked after red-crwned cranes at the lcal nature reserve. These tall, slim-necked birds are a symbl f luck, lng life and lyalty, but they are nw amng the rarest crane species in the wrld.Xiujuan lved birds and started helping her father with his wrk at 17. At first, it was hard, but later she became very gd at taking care f them. When she hatched her first cranes, she was nly a teenager. When she was 21, Xiujuan was ffered a jb at a nature reserve in Yancheng, Jiangsu Prvince. She carefully packed three red-crwned crane eggs and tk them with her t Yancheng. The trip was lng but Xiujuan made sure the eggs were warm and safe. Xiujuan wrked hard at the nature reserve. She nt nly cared fr cranes, but als lked after swans and ther bird species. Whenever a bird became sick, she wuld stay with it day and night until it was strng enugh t fly again. One day in 1987, tw swans went missing. The wrkers in the nature reserve lked everywhere fr them. Xiujuan was alarmed, and searched fr them fr tw days and nights. Since it is typical f swans t feed in the wetlands, she decided t lk fr the birds there. She was hungry and thirsty, and her bdy was sre frm swimming, but she cntinued searching in the water fr many hurs. Finally, she was t tired t return t the shre. Xiujuan lst her life.
