CROWS invited me t jin them n a wrk trip in the valley ne cludy mrning. We were ff t uncver a path, part f the 18th century packhrse netwrk. Buying smething that yu are ging t share with anther persn creates greater anxiety than buying smething just fr yurself r buying a gift fr smene, accrding t a new study. The study als fund that shpping fr things yu will share lwers yur cnfidence in yur ability t chse suitable items (物品). The study, which has been published in the Jurnal f Marketing Research, lked at three kinds f shpping experience: buying smething fr yurself, buying a gift fr smene and buying smething fr shared use.
Over 2,000 peple were asked t measure their levels f anxiety fr these three experiences in different shpping situatins, such as chsing healthy drinks fr a meeting, snacks fr a mvie r wine fr a party, as well as mre difficult decisins such as chsing travel activities. The results shwed that buying smething that will be shared causes bviusly mre anxiety than either shpping fr yurself r shpping fr a gift.
The researchers fund that when shppers need t cnsider bth their wn and ther peple’s preferences, they feel an increased sense f respnsibility, and wrry mre abut nt making the right chices. This anxiety is felt especially when the ther persn’s preferences aren’t knwn, r if they are expected t be different frm their wn. One f the researchers, Margaret Campbell, tld Phys. rg that the level f anxiety is nt related t hw difficult the shpper’s decisin is, but t the “added emtinal weight f respnsibility.”
The researchers said trying t learn as much as yu can abut the ther persn’s preferences can help reduce yur anxiety and increase yur cnfidence as the shpper. Hwever, this still desn’t wrk if the ther persn’s preferences are different frm yur wn!
Als, if a shpper asks yu what yur preferences are, saying yu dn’t care, r, “Get whatever yu like,” is nt a helpful answer and will actually increase the shpper’s anxiety. S it’s better t give a mre cnsidered answer.
      8. What is the main finding f the study?
      A. Shpping reduces peple’s anxiety.
      B. Anxiety weakens the ability t chse gifts.
      C. Anxiety leads peple t chse right items.
      D. Shpping t share causes the mst anxiety.
      9. Hw did the researchers carry ut the study?
      A. By tracking shpping anxiety surces.
      B. By assessing anxiety levels f shpping types.
      C. By cmparing shpping habits f different grups.
      D. By testing shpping preferences fr certain items.
      10. What mainly caused the anxiety abut shpping fr shared use?
      A. The shared preferences.
      B. The duty t meet bth sides.
      C. The uncertainty f the results.
      D. The difficulty in making chices.
      11. Which answer might be preferred when buying shared items?

      B. “I ften prefer tea, but juice wuld als wrk.”
      C. “I’d prefer a drink withut sugar, like green tea.”
      D. “Yu have gd taste — I’ll like whatever yu pick.”
      D
Tinamus are grund-dwelling jungle birds in the frests f Central and Suth America. They camuflage (伪装) themselves t hide frm predatrs (捕食者). What desn’t make sense is why such artfully camuflaged birds lay brightly clred eggs and leave males alne t prtect them.
Studying tinamus in Csta Rica, scientist Patricia Brennan discvered 60 percent f eggs were cared fr by males, but nt their bilgical fathers. This ges against the standard Darwin’s thery that male-nly parental care shuld nly evlve (进化) when males have a high certainty f bilgical fatherhd. Brennan thught she’d made a mistake. Yet, duble-checking her lab wrk, she fund she was right and wndered hw the female was getting away with it.
If bilgical fatherhd is imprtant t tinamus, ne wuld expect the male t evlve a way f thrwing ut freign eggs. But as Brennan discvered, the male tinamu has n such skills. T d her bilgical fatherhd testing, she had t remve real eggs and replace them with fake nes. The males cntinued t incubate (孵化) the fake eggs regardless. Then, when the baby birds came ut f the eggs in her lab, Brennan wuld put them in existing yung in the frest. Again, the males didn’t care.
That was her aha mment. She set up cameras n the tinamu nests (巢) and recrded abut 80 percent f the eggs being eaten by predatrs, mstly snakes. Brennan realized that the best way fr bth females and males t achieve their baby birds’ best survival chance was t spread their eggs acrss different nests.
This intentinal mix-up als explained the eggs’ bright clrs. This is an attractin signal t ther females t lay their eggs there. Brennan bserved that snakes nly ate at mst three eggs at a time. S, the mre eggs, the better chance f surviving.
Her research, then, rescues the great tinamu frm being cnsidered an irrespnsible parent, but als shws that the idea f being a gd mther can take many frms.
      12. What can we learn frm the first tw paragraphs?
      A. Brennan’s lab wrk turned ut a failure.
      B. Brennan’s study changed Darwin’s thery.
      C. Tinamu eggs were taken care f by males.
      D. Tinamu eggs were well hidden frm predatrs.
      13. What des Brennan’s “aha mment” in paragraph 4 refer t?
      A. She drve away all the snakes.
      B. She fund tinamus’ survival secret.
      C. She recrded the prcess f egg lss.
      D. She set up cameras n tinamu nests.
      14. What rle d the brightly clred eggs play?
      A. They make it easier fr males t find the eggs.
      B. They act as a warning t predatrs t stay away.
      C. They help the males t prtect eggs mre easily.
      D. They attract ther females t lay in the same nest.
      15. What des the behaviur f tinamus shw?
      A. Like father, like sn.
      B. Birds in their little nests agree.
      C. When ne dr shuts, anther pens.
      D. Dn’t put all yur eggs in ne basket.

Penn and Teller are amazing magicians, but they d nt d shws fr kids. ____16____ The challenge lies in a little-nticed characteristic f perfrming fr kids: during a shw, a kid ften shuts, “I knw hw yu did that!”
Why d sme kids d this? Smetimes, it’s pure excitement, but mre ften, it’s ttally a wish t be “seen and heard” that has nthing t d with being plite. The funny thing is that they hardly understand hw the magic is really dne. All magic illusins (幻象) are nt as simple as they may appear. ____17____ A mirrr might truly be a part f making the illusin wrk, but it simply desn’t explain hw the illusin is fully dne.

The mre astnishing finding, hwever, is that the mre we actually knw, the less ur cnfidence is abut hw much we actually knw. ____19____ Adults make psts nline like “That’s nt true!” especially when they are nt knwledgeable n the tpic.
Hw d yu fix it? Here’s the deal: attempting t use critical (批判性的) thinking t explre what we believe are true is the best path frward. Overly cnfident statements will always exist, because that vercnfidence is built int each f us. Once we realize it’s ur wn vercnfidence speaking — nt the truth, we can d smething abut it. ____20____
      A. Illusins are easy t create.
      B. This is the Dunning-Kruger effect.
      C. Fr them, shws fr kids are “just t hard.”
      D. A cry f “It’s a mirrr!” might be partially right.

      F. They dn’t lk t their friend plitely and nd knwingly.
