In the 2010s, 34-year-old Brianne Miller travelled around the world and made a surprising discovery: large amounts of plastic littering the water and doing harm to sea life. Miller kaew she needed to do something.

Canadians throw out three million tons of plastic waste each year. Groups like A Greener Future, which organize litter clean-ups across Canada, think that 33% of what they pick up comes from food packaging. About one third of food produced worldwide goes to waste too, according to a UN study. Miller decided to solve the problem at the source, imagining a shop where both wasteful packaging and the bad habit of wasting food no longer existed.

In June 2018, she opened her first zero-waste store in Canada. She named it Nada. Customers can bring their own containers (容器), though it's not necessary: by the front door are

quarrels don't go that far. These days, especially in cities, many people live in buildings. Our

neighbours are all around us - so what problems can come from that?

The first obvious cause of argurment is noise pollution. Loud noise through the walls, construction (施工),or people arguing next door can disturb the silencc of your living space. Asking someone directly to turn the music down can cause you to feel anxious. However,if you get somconc likc a building manager to speak to your neighbour, it can make things more awkward becausc you didn't speak to your neighbour directly.

And then what about smells? If your neighbour likes cating food with pungent(刺激的) smells, and the smells flow through your window, what can you do? There are some other common problems, such as water running through the wall, pets making noise, and littering from the window above you. These can bring anger over time.

It's not easy living next door to someone, especially if they're noisy. But having a clear and honest conversation might help. Also, try thinking if what you are doing could make your neighbours angry. If it's something that would makc you fecl bad, maybe think again.

    28. Why does the author mention Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in paragraph 2?

    A.To present a fact.

    C. To cxplain a topic.

    B. To provide an cxample.

    D. To make a comparison.

    29. What are you advised to do if a neighbor makes too much noise?

    A.Turn to the police.

    C.Quarrel with the neighbor.

    B.Talk to the neighbor directly.

D.Ask the building manager for help.

30.What can we infer about a neighbor's pungent food smells?

    A.They provide you pleasure.

    C. They're your neighbor's favorites.

    B.They open your imagination.

    D.They make you uncomfortable.

    31. What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A. How to make a neighbor happy.

    B. How to deal with a noisy neighbour.

C.How to communicate with a neighbour.

    D. How to get along well with a neighbour.

    D

How would you go without your smartphone? For many of us, our smartphone is the first and last thing we look at every day. We depend on it to perform a number of tasks and connect with our friends and family. But have we become addicted to our phoncs?

Ccrtainly, the inventor of the first mobile phone.American engineer Martin Cooper, thinks we might be. In a BBC interview, he suggested people quit scrolling (刷屏) and get a life".But of course, once wve start scrolling or watching videos, we just can't kick the habit. Psychologist Jean Twenge says we feel regret for checking our phone again and again if we're waiting for a lext or getting really into social media then kind of, looking up and realising that an hour has passed.

But does it matter if we make the most of this technology? Possibly, because like medicine. the problem appcars when it is withdrawn. A study from King's College London found young people couldn't control the amount of time they spend on their phone. Such behaviour means that people become anxious" or upset" if they are not allowed to be on the phone continuously, which can cause anxiety and mental health problems.

Interestingly, another study by the London School of Economics Science suggests we don't just look at our phones when we receive text or cmail messages. The people they studied felt an automatical(白动的) need to check thcir phone, just as a smoker would light a cigarette.

One solution could be an app that rewards (奖励) students for time spent away from their phones. Another choice is changing your smartphone to a dumbphone that has none of the things that turn your attention away. But mainly, perhaps, we just need to look up more and reconnect with the real world!

32.What is Martin Cooper's attitude to focusing on smartphones?

    A.Uncaring.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Unclear.

    D.Unacceptable.

    33. What does the underlined word withdrawn" in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Stopped.

    B.Increased.

    C.Offered.

    D.Saved.

    34. What is the author's kcy suggestion in the last paragraph?

    A.Concentrate on studies.

    C. Buy a ncw smartphone.

    B. Get a reward for offline time.

    D.Contact with the real world.

    35. What can be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Benefits from Smartphones

    C.Development of Smartphones

    B.Addiction to Smartphones

    D.Disadvantages of Smartphones

If your dog is anything like mine, she loves rolling (滚) around in grass if she gets any chance. And it always makes me happy to watch my dog have the time of her life. You may wonder why she actually does it.36

She's enjoying a smell. It's important to remember how powerful your dog's nose is.7 Sometimes they want to enjoy the smell they've found in the grass. So they will roll in it to do just that.

38 There's another smelly reason why your dog may be rolling around in grass. There is a theory that dogs may roll in grass to cover their own smell. They want to smell like the environment so they don't frighten prey(猎物) away, Dr. Austin said.

She's cooling off. If it's a particularly hot day, that grass may look extra attractive to your dog. It might be a little wet-perfect for your dog to cool off.

She's having fun. Your dog may also just be relaxed and having fun.39

If you notice your dog rolling around in the grass, it's probably that he is having a good time. 40 But now I'm thinking I will enjoy myself next time.

    A. I'm not sure about you.

    B. She's covering up her own smell.

    C. Rolling on her back is a way to show it.

D.They can pick up on hundreds of smells.

E.She does know how to read your feelings.

F This is a reason why dogs are used as support animals.

So when receiving it, her teacher was surprised but smiled. She started reading what was written in it. The teachers heart was filled with pleasure and happiness. She hugged Tinky tightly and said Thank you so much honey! Tinky was also full of joy. She never saw her teacher that happy before. Then Tinky thought what if her teacher came to know that it was a stolen card. She felt quite ashamed of her stupidity. She decided to tell the teacher the truth. Knowing what had happened, the teacher praised her for her honesty. She realized a greeting card was not costly but the value it gave was precious.

W: All right, thank you. How much do they cost?

    M: 19 dollars for size 7 and 20 dollars for size 8.

    W: OK. I’ll take a size 7.

    (Text 7)

M: Ella, do you have any aspirin? I have a terrible headache.

W: I don’t have an aspirin. Perhaps you should go to a doctor.

M: No, no. I’m okay. I think I can manage.

W: Really? John! You look sick. You must go home.

M: I can’t. I’m already behind schedule. Besides, you know, Mr.Thomas. He may think that I am not working hard.

W: Don’t think too much about work. Ah, you’ve got a fever!

    M: Do I? Oh, no!

W: Listen to me. You go home now. I’ll call my doctor and have him go over, OK?

    M: What about Mr. Thomas?

W: I’ll handle him. Now go home. I’ll call you after work.

    M: Thanks a lot. Goodbye!

    (Text 8)

    M: Hello, Jack here.

W: Hello, Jack. Its Mary. What are you doing in your office?

M: Im working. I often work late on Thursday. Im busy this week.

W: Would you like to come and have dinner with us on Friday?

M: Tomorrow? No, I am afraid I wont be able to. Im going on business to Birmingham.

    W: What about Saturday?

M: Sorry, I never go out on Saturday evening. I always watch football on Saturday evening.

W: Will you come round next Tuesday?

M: Next Tuesday? Just a moment. It will be the twenty-first of May? Oh, dear. Hum, I promised my aunt Ill be at her birthday party.

W: What do you say to next Wednesday then?

M: Let me see. Yes, Mary. Lets make it next Wednesday.

    W: Okay. Bye.

    M: Bye.

    (Text 9)

W: Theres never anything to do in this town, is there? Lets choose a hobby, an outdoor one for the weekends and holidays.

M: OK, then, how about going fishing? We could go to the river in the valley over there, or even down to the lakes.

W: Well, I think Id prefer to do something a bit more exciting. And anyway Id feel sorry for the poor fish! Perhaps we could try a water sport, something like water-skiing, maybe.

M: Yes, but we cant afford to hire a boat. I think we should do something cheaper, or better still, free!

W: All right, why dont we go rock-climbing? Thats free, and it can be exciting, too.

M: Hmm. I think itd be better to do something less dangerous.

W: OK, let me see... I knowwhat about mountain-biking? Its outdoor, quite safe, fairly cheap...

M: Yes, we could hire a couple of bikes and see if we like it. So shall we do that, then?

W: I think it would be great. We could ride through the hills and into the forest. So, yes, lets go for that one.

    (Text 10)

W: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to our tour. This morning, were going to take you to some points of historical interest in the city. If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to ask.

If you look out of the window on your right, youll see the Grange, one of the oldest buildings in the city. It was built for the mayor 200 years ago, and still has most of the original furniture. Perhaps the most interesting thing is that every Saturday afternoon, you can come and watch them bake bread the way it was done 200 years ago.

On your left is University College, the founding college of the University of Toronto. This university building is just 125 years old. We’ll be stopping in a moment at Bridgeton Castle. The castle was built by Sir Henry Pellet for his young wife. He bought almost all of the building materials from England. Notice the beautiful glass windows. Unfortunately, Sir Henry’s young wife became ill and died before the castle was completed. Sir Henry became so unhappy that he left the castle and returned to England. No family members ever lived there.
